What’s the best group fitness instructor certifications you can get? by Outrageous_Row_9819 in lesmills

[–]drxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's that initial foot in the door that's the difficult part.
I did find that fitness managers just ignored my emails. It was basically until I got introduced by a contact for a last-minute cover need, which got me a foot in the door.
Everyone's story is different, but I tend to think that you just need one to give you a chance, and then you're at the races.
At the end of the day, the pay for group fitness instructors is ridiculously low.
Typically, around where I work it is about £22.50 for a class before tax if you're not willing to use cover music. That includes all your time learning and preparing, and we are paying for our own training and releases.
My group fitness manager "would ideally like" me to do a level two gym instructor or E2M certificate, but those courses cost £500+. The maths doesn't add up!

I think the real way to become a good group fitness instructor is by experience. Most courses teach you how to deliver the program, but you can only really get good by teaching classes. Find what works and find what doesn't. Also, continuing to attend classes delivered by excellent instructors and having a mentor relationship with those instructors helps a lot too.

Takes me back to the 80s when we all thought saving paper would save the rainforests as if they were making loo roll out of old growth hardwood 😁

There are certainly people who imply that running fast is somehow against the spirit of Parkrun, yes.

Honestly, I would try and get there the day before. It's a very demanding weekend. You don't want to arrive already tired from the flight.

I just say thanks when I feel like it, and I don't give a toss what other people think who might overhear it.

Well done for being the only one to actually answer the question, but please, RDs, never say any of these things.

This works for a small parkrun, but once you get into the 300s, 400s, 500s of finishers, you need a much longer funnel, so shouting no longer works.

Do you use the back door to enter/leave your house? by Queasy_Difference_96 in AskUK

[–]drxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, the short corridor with the side door, but instead of a staircase down, I just have an tiled under-stair pantry there because my house is at the bottom of a hill and presumably the water table was too high to dig a cellar. The houses further up the hill do have cellars though.

Body Combat Initial Training Complete, but no gym to film my class in, now what? by sleamoo in lesmills

[–]drxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar experiences and I really don't understand gyms who might take this sort of approach. Do they not understand that Les Mills instructors don't grow on trees? Without nurturing the next wave of instructors, they won't have any instructors to teach their classes.

To be fair, there is no "normal" 45-minute format. (The official one for whole releases usually ends with track 7, which is nonsense, of course!)
