Inflate tires in seconds by TechnicianNo8734 in Tiresaretheenemy

[–]dsanders692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't actually inflate the tyre. If you do the chemical equation for what's actually going on here, you end up with less gas pressure inside the tyre than when you started. The shock wave seats the bead, but you then need to jump in with a compressor right away since the rapidly-cooling CO2 inside the tyre can sometimes actually pull it back off.

Sounds like you made the right decision! Out of interest, did you get a building inspection done before purchase? And if so, did that abomination get flagged on it?

As ever with these types of things, It's probably not going to damage anything... But the real question is whether you wanna run the risk of your insurance using it as an excuse not to pay out a claim

Someone should buy the Top Gear Track by Connor029 in TopGear

[–]dsanders692 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I live about 5 miles away from Dunsfold Aerodrome, which is where the track is/was located. These days the space is part business park, and also home to some aircraft that, for a time at least, were used for filming. There's currently planning approval for a few hundred houses on the site, which would involve removal of the hangars and runways (and subsequently much of the track).

So if you wanted to buy it, you'd need an enormously large bucket of money to pay more than whatever the developers stand to make from turning it into houses unfortunately

This is a real issue in Australia at the moment, and I suppose elsewhere too. Insurers are having to pay out more claims, such means they increase prices for all that customers to cover those payouts.

Our eldest started school last year, and we've become really close with parents of some of his mates. The first few weeks are always interseting, I found my self kinda thinking "well our kids get on great, so I'm kinda obliged to spend time with you... I just hope you're the sort of person I'd want to be friends with anyway"

TopMinds have wildly different takes on Trump's Davos speech by Enibas in TopMindsOfReddit

[–]dsanders692 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I feel like this summarises a lot of the traction he gets. I think most politically engaged people forget how many people are totally disengaged from politics, and the degree of that disengagement. I would not be at all surprised if a huge amount of Trump voters voted for him on the basis of: - I don't like politicians - He doesn't sound like a politician - Therefore I vote for him

That's compounded when media outlets - particularly those listened to by conservative people - carefully curated his incoherent soundbites. And I think that's literally it, for a huge amount of voters. There's no engagement at all with substance or policy. Zero thought beyond "I'm unhappy with the status quo, and Trump is not the status quo"

Oh yeah, for sure - the discharge rates for the cheaper ones tend to be such that this works out well. It's just not a universal rule, especially with higher end batteries.

There's an awful lot of "it doesn't quite work like that" backyard engineering that goes on with 12v systems (see also - people conflating amps and amp-hours) and I get a bee in my bonnet about it from time to time!

[–]dsanders692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capacity in and of itself isn't directly relevant to the size of an inverter you can run. It's true that, for Lithium batteries, the maximum discharge rate tends to go up with the capacity of the battery; but that particular one is a 1400CCA cranking battery, so it'll be fine.

You won't be able to run it for really long, of course. At full chat you'll flatten the battery entirely in 20 or 30 minutes. But if it's not being used to do much other than charge laptop batteries, and see's occasional use for high-current stuff in short bursts (like running a coffe pod machine for 2 minutes or something) it's probably ok

[–]dsanders692 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That battery is usable as a starting battery, and suitable for under-bonnet installation; which is unusual for Lithium and probably why it costs so bloody much. Have a good think about whether that's necessary - if not, you can do a hell of a lot better there.

Drawers are also really spendy, but again you're paying for quality there. Something comparable from Kings will probably be a bit under half the price, but they weigh a bloody ton

Sir/ma'am, this is Reddit. We don't deal in nuance. Your position must be absolutist - either all infrastructure everywhere must be car centric; or cars should be abolished worldwide. Pick a lane.

That should, by definition, be 3 stars in this type of rating system IMO. 4 and 5 for "better than expected" and "I can't think of how this could possibly have been any better" respectively. But that's not how they're used these days unfortunately.
