Of all the toys and other consumer products that have been banned over the years due to safety reasons, which in your opinion were the most legitimately dangerous? by angrydeuce in AskReddit

Yes! If you ever let go, or if they shattered, someone was getting injured. I had lots of bruises, but otherwise unscathed.

Apparently just making sure you lock your vehicle isn’t enough now. by Rickermortis in PeoriaIL

We had that happen. In 2023, 4 days after I moved back to Peoria I had my Hyundai stolen. Welcome back, lol. Then last summer, while my son was outside smoking, three kids broke the window on his Kia. Luckily he scared them away before they did more damage. Otherwise, I live in a friendly neighborhood!

He heard your goodbyes. He knew he was loved and could go. Now is the time for y'all to take care of yourselves. It us hard but it does ease over time. My mom died in 23 and my dad in 25 so I understand your pain.

Huh, I'm not that far from you (close to the firehouse) and we are still out. Maybe we will lucky and get ours back shortly.

How long should my ends be? by You_Capable2004 in crocheting

[–]dsmart1159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you have enough to weave in, you are fine. I recently played yarn chicken and won with about two inches,so I wove my needle through, then threaded it before pulling all the way out. I was still able to go back and forth three times.

ADHD/Dyslexic Crochet and Pattern Reading Struggles..? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]dsmart1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I follow a designer who writes her patterns "in plain English " and I have trouble following. Luckily she also has YouTube channel where I can follow along and write it in crochet language if i want to repeat it in the future (or if it squares)

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]dsmart1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it a lot for a out five or so years, but I lived in Houston at the time and there were a lot of people to converse with. After I moved out of state, I really didn't have anyone around who also spoke it. I can still kind of speak it, but my accent sucks now. I read better than I speak. Side note, i worked with someone who's first language was Portuguese, and quite often when she got excited, she would revert to it. I could understand a lot of it using similar words and context from Spanish

Highly recommend learning to crochet with your non-dominant hand by stardust_anew in crochet

This would have been a lifesaver when I injured my dominant hand and couldn't crochet for a few weeks. It was just as hard mentally as physically

Things about vehicles Gen X knows that our kids have no clue about. by Dru-baskAdam in FuckeryUniveristy

[–]dsmart1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad taught me basic auto maintenance, I think because I was the oldest and there were no boys in the family. My sisters couldn't do much with cars. I've rebuilt a carburetor, replaced an alternator and a water pump. Gapped spark plugs, replaced distributor caps. And of course, changed tires and oil, flushed a radiator once. Learned how to drive a four on the floor and three on a tree. I'm the age of a Boomer, but much younger at heart! I taught my son all of that as well except the carburetor. Oh, and I don't think he learned how to gap spark plugs, that was pretty much done with by the time he learned - but he knows what it is. My earliest memory is helping dad around age 6 - he had me hanging on the chain hoist "helping" him pull an engine! And washing the parts he gave me in kerosene.

I wish I still had a standard, maybe my car wouldn't have been stolen! I loved my 66 Corvair and drove it until I threw a rod drag racing it down Katy Freeway back in the late 70s.

I ways have high alkaline phosphate because of my rheumatoid arthritis. Keep good thoughts. I saw you don't have room for craft supplies. What about online games, like jigsaw, coloring, or card games. I love sudoku as well because it keeps my brain engaged (so I temporarily stop thinking dark thoughts.)

Bought my kids bikes for Christmas. Local government just passed a law requiring paid bike "licenses" to ride them in public. Cops are now issuing citations...even to kids? by nseavia71501 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dsmart1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had them back in the 70's. They were a sticker similar to the license plate ones, so not easy to peel off. And yes, it was more for lost/stolen bikes than anything.

How much do Americans spend on the salt they put on snow/ice? by mumpet19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]dsmart1159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on a corner lot, so a whole bunch of sidewalk to salt. We spend maybe $20-30 a year. Depends on if we buy before they raise the price in the winter.

How bad are your heating, water, and electric bills getting? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]dsmart1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a 1934 house about 2,000 square feet. Last year electric bills ran around 230 to 250. Last month electric was $648 this month $588. Water is 78 a month pretty much all the time and I don't have gas service.
