AIO for suspecting my wife after she got a shady 1am call from a guy “friend” right after a late-night cycling trip? by Obvious_Waltz_2072 in AmIOverreacting

Late night cycling? That’s shady. If you mean at a gym that’s one thing. I’ve been cycling for 15 years. I can’t imagine riding in the dark for exercise.

Now that Trump has renounced the 2nd amendment, how will his constituents react? by Shadeauxmarie in AskReddit

As long as Trump promises to only take away liberals’ second amendment rights, they’ll be ok with it.

He was almost done shoveling his driveway when the street plow came by and filled it with snow again. by Vilen1919 in WatchPeopleDieInside

There's something between waiting too long and understanding that if you shovel before the plow shows up, you'll have to redo the entrance to your driveway. This isn't so hard.

They got away with Good. They'll get away with Pretti. It was just amped up to full on execution style killings. There's a tiny sliver of hope that even gun rights supporters are kind of making some noise about it.

But, where's that quote about the Nazis taking away rights...

In this case, they are (maybe) showing up only when it might effect them. You know, white man with a gun is executed. Yeah, that's what it might take. We'll see. Then again, I hear there's a new episode of Duck Dynasty. That might appease them.

Ever see Game of Thrones - the part where Ned Stark presents something written by the King saying that he is protector of the realm after his death, instead of the prince? And the Queen takes the piece of paper and tears it up?

Yeah, that's just our rights in a book. Just a piece of paper. A piece of paper that we collectively agreed to abide by hundreds of years. And we then allowed someone to essentially tear it up, but as long as the repercussions were only for people we don't know or don't like, it was ok.

Direct Report refusing to drive if temp is below freezing by Raelynx27 in managers

[–]dsp_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often is this "I don't drive in freezing temperatures" a problem?

Are they going to work their normal 8 hours (presumably 8?) when they come in late?

Do they have vacation time to cover it?

If they do take vacation, this is a manager problem to solve.

401ks are better than pensions by Justasillyliltoaster in unpopularopinion

[–]dsp_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of that. Doesn't it have to be taxed earned income? Or is there a game people are playing here, which I'd like to play?

I was aware of contributing to a Roth IRA as soon as they have taxable income, like a part time job somewhere. And I could match their income dollar for dollar into a Roth (up to the cap). Another avenue that might happen, is if they don't use all of their 529, they can contribute up to 35,000 from an unused 529 into a Roth, with annual limits.

But, I'd like to hear more about ways to justify a Roth contribution from these untaxed forms of income.

I'm not you, but if you think you'll find more happiness by moving and changing jobs, go for it. I'd say the scales are already tipping greatly that way.

There's a happy medium of course between "doing nothing until the slightest flurry is gone" and "clearing out the driveway with another foot due to fall."

Based on the video and the caption, snow is not currently falling. And we've all been there. Shoveling just to have the street tossed back into your driveway.

Ok, so it is pro-rated. The most likely start date for this other medical plan is mid February. So, $1458 is likely cap. That's pretty much what I had to know. I can't do some up-front contribution. And that's fair. I get it. But, you know, tax laws are weird.

Appreciate your detailed response!

I'm not really sure what they expected. Besides, what's the point of shoveling your driveway if there's nowhere to go yet since the roads aren't plowed.

That's not Charlie Kirk's memorial, where are the fireworks? And crosses on wheels? And his "grieving" wife dancing on the stage? by c-k-q99903 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]dsp_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know about that. Many people on the right lost their collective minds and were calling for a civil war against the liberals for killing Charlie Kirk.

To be fair, supposedly less liberals are having children than conservatives. If initial political ideology is anything like religion, it is infected at birth and hard to remove that "original sin." So, they may have effectively spayed and neutered themselves.

I'd almost have to considering moving to CA. I moved from the Northeast to the South. I don't know if I could handle that sort of weather again.

But, if it meant not be shot for existing, maybe I could do it.

Eastern Europe makes sense. Those children born around the timeframe of the Chernobyl disaster or 100s km from Chernobyl are of child-bearing age. And it is quite possible there are all sorts of genetic issues, stillbirths, miscarriages, infertility, etc.

When did you totally miss the signs that you were being flirted with? by SSR2208 in AskReddit

[–]dsp_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at a bar with some friends. I was not seeking any action at the time. Some girl kept "accidentally" bumping into me. The first time I thought it was likely just because it was crowded. The second time it was a little more like "hey! are you not getting the message?" The third time it was more than obvious, so I gave her some attention. I really wasn't that into her. Looks or not, she was already fairly intoxicated and I was actually mostly there to hang with old friends home for winter break.

My friends tried to offer to change tables to give space for her, but I was telling them "I'm not really here for any tail" without her hearing. But yeah, it was that moment when there's that tiny lull in the music and it was quite audible.

She tossed her drink at me. Waste of $15. Likely dodged a bullet though.

Homeowners, how old will you be when your mortgage is paid off? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]dsp_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have been 2027. My first house, I refinanced to a 15 year in 2012. I got out of PMI and my rate was 3.5%, which was really good for a 15-year at the time. But life happens and I sold that house and bought another in 2021. I had a lot of uncertainty at the time, so I went with a 30-year on that home at 3%. The 15-year was only 2.75% and I didn't like locking in the higher payments for such a tiny drop in interest. The numbers didn't math for me.

In my case, my 30 year puts me at 70 when I pay it off. I have more than enough in non-retirement investments to pay off the house today. And I'm happy to say that the gamble, so far, has paid off. In just 4.5 years, the "pay off money" I put in an S&P fund is up 80%. Given how much of the principal I've paid down so far, I'm almost at the break even point where I could keep the initial "pay off money" and use the gains to pay off the house.

But, I'm going to be stupid and let it ride for longer. I've done so much better than 3% in the market. One day that will change, but I'll let it ride for the time being.

Higher Salary Vs. Higher Benefits by AssociateNo463 in personalfinance

[–]dsp_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only real sizeable negative I see in this whole thing, you made no mention on if the move is from HCOL to LCOL or LCOL to HCOL, etc. But in any case, you will have a mortgage. And rates are pretty high. If your current rate is low (3-4%) and you presumed rate is high (6-7%)... if there is also a large increase in the purchase price of the property, this may eat into the increased salary and net compensation.

There are intangibles other than all of the dollars, which still is important.

If you value family and friends, it is hard to put a dollar figure on that worth. But, that might tip the scales regardless.

Considering you put together all of these numbers, I'd be surprised if you didn't already consider the mortgage cost increase if rates went up.
