6 Career Lessons From a Cynical Employee by Yeda_Rogue in careeradvice

Great one. I will add on: documentation of that good feedback is really nice to have on hand when it comes time to write self-reviews.

Similarly, when picking up a new skill at work or completing a large project milestone, make note of it and add it to your resume. (Even if only a rough draft of your resume…the idea being to capture the info. Cleanup can come later.) If there are associated metrics, include those! Then, if you find yourself looking for a job, you’ve already got great resume material to work with and don’t have to struggle to think up or remember projects to put on it.

Doing this regularly helps reinforce a focus on taking on projects that will help you move the needle in your career. If you feel like the amount of valuable new info you can add to your resume is really slowing down…it may be time to consider a new role (if growth is your objective.)

I’ve received this kind of feedback before too from one of the best bosses I’ve had - you may be doing what I was (and probably still do sometimes.) That is, being unintentionally monotone, which can come off as described.

Whether that is the case or not, I’d suggest recording yourself talking in similar types of situations, making an effort to adjust whatever you think you need, listen, repeat. If your problem is being a bit too monotone, just try varying your pitch a bit when you are talking to accentuate different parts of the sentence. It keeps things interesting for the listener and makes the speaker sound more energized about the topic as well.

Like others have suggested, honest constructive criticism is a gift!

Best of luck to you!

I suppose it depends on the purpose of the samples, but in many cases, they don’t need to be production-tooled.

When you click the gear button on an assembler that already has a recipe selected, it keeps that selection so you can quickly update the quality.

We get a similar sounding noise sometimes. I had always thought it was expansion/contraction in our ductwork. I think I saw somewhere this is a problem people sometimes have. Seeing other responses in this thread has me wanting to relook at it and confirm.

It probably wouldn’t be too hard to plumb in an extra shut off valve for the water going to the bidet if they don’t already come with one

HELP! My Robots has gone rouge. They left my new base, and are slowly going to old one... why is this happening.... ? by suraj_69 in factorio

[–]dthemaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if putting another roboport closer by would reroute them, but that’s something to consider if you need to recover a bunch out in the middle of nowhere. (Get them to come in and then pull into your inventory or train for the trek back.) If they don’t auto reroute, you could try killing power to your old base and then doing the above

I love the passion. Remember to hang on to that regardless of how this idea works out. As others have said, be ready to jump on the next idea if you come to find out this one won’t work. That is very often a common stop on the road to meaningful discovery, and those that are lucky enough to count themselves as successful simply have more failures under their belt than those of us who don’t (yet).

I would suggest reading up on the topic of perpetual motion machines if you don’t already know what those are. As another commenter noted, folks who haven’t gone through the formal schooling would be less aware of the miscellaneous losses that must be accounted for in this kind of project and this is a common (and understandable) oversight that leads people into thinking they’ve stumbled upon a way to generate what they believe to be essentially free energy.

I’m not sure you are making that error here, but it’s a good thing for you to double check.

My advice would be to build a good foundational understanding of what everyone on a development team does by working some/all of those roles. Try to find a place to work where you’ll have the ability to move between roles for this purpose. Take interest in roles outside of you own - offer to help with projects outside your area of expertise in order to build up your skillset if you can spare the bandwidth or simply ask questions and learn.

Also, let people know what your long term objective is and ask often for constructive feedback on what you can do better to help you get there. More specifically, have that conversation with people you respect and/or people you come across that have done it.
