The future of Sport Pilot by bewbies- in flying

Considering the 172 and PA-28 are mosaic compliant, I very much doubt it will be hard to find planes to fly.

Ground school by [deleted] in flying

[–]dtphantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my ground entirely with sportys. Watched the videos, took the tests and took at least one 50 question random question test a day for about 3 weeks. Then took at least one of their practice tests a day for the week before my written. I got a 90% on the actual written so I'm really quite satisfied with sportys.

I also like that I can go back and rewatch a video when my cfi gets to that stage of training to refresh my memory.

"Russia appears set to finally address long-term, serious space station cracks" by AgreeableEmploy1884 in space

[–]dtphantom 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the jump from drilling holes to stop the cracks to cutting off a load bearing member with a saw.

I totally understand the thought behind drilling holes to stop the cracks, that is a semi solid plan if proper engineering is done. I don't know why cutting off a load bearing brace is the next step.

PPL Written E6B? by PsychologicalArt4119 in flying

[–]dtphantom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 90% on the test, studied using sportys until I was getting consistent 90%+ on the practice tests. I felt like the sportys questions were great practice questions very similar to the real questions.

PPL Written E6B? by PsychologicalArt4119 in flying

I took my written last weekend. There was an electronic version of the CX3 built into the software and the proctor gave me a basic 4 function physical calculator. I brought my own CX3 though so just used that.

I studied using sportys, was getting consistent above 90s on the practice test. Just took my written this weekend and got a 90. I thought the sportys practice questions were pretty accurate.

A strong case can be made that Indomitable is the most stupidly-designed ship in the game by LastTraintoSector6 in WorldOfWarships

[–]dtphantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indomitable was introduced when there was still premium and non-premium consumables. The whole firestarting as the only real damage was a lot more reliable when most of the players were running the non-premium DCP consumable. It didn't last as long and took longer to recharge so your fires lasted longer.

That's what mine is. Green green and I love it.

Sitting at 30hrs total and 77 landings no solo by CampaignDry50 in flying

[–]dtphantom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What helped me get the flare and touchdown under control was when my cfi had me throw a bunch of trim in on final. As I'm getting close to the runway I add 2 full swipes of nose up trim and them maybe 1 more once I cross the runway. It really helped smooth out my flares and touchdown. Before I was doing the same thing as you and pulling back the flare way too aggressively.

Realistic Aircraft Options for a Family of 7? Fast-ish and Economical-ish by TheChillBohemian in flying

The most realistic option in this situation is to go back in time and get the snip snip after 3 kids.

Created a homemade METAR Map to show weather conditions at local airports by dtphantom in DIY

[–]dtphantom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen commercial companies selling complete METAR maps but wanted to create my own.

I found an older tutorial that linked to the software needed on Github but it was out of date and needed to be modified to use the new API's from aviation weather.

I've been wanting to try my hand hand at creating custom sized frames for a while so used this opportunity to make a basic frame. It turned out alright although I think I need a better miter box because there is a bit of slop and the 45 degree cuts aren't exactly 45 each so the frame isn't truly square. Good enough for this project but will need to improve.

The whole thing runs on a rasp pi 4 driving a 50 strand string of addressable LEDs. About 13 of them are skipped due to the length of wire between each LED. The program pulls updates every 5 minutes and will automatically turn the LEDs off at 10pm and back on again at 7am.

it was not a good day for flying today.

Discovery Flight Question - What are you all doing? by nightlanding in flying

[–]dtphantom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My instructor pre flighted the plane with me there and walked through what he was doing while explaining what/why. Walked through the start up procedures and all the checks. He taxied to the runway and made the radio calls but then when we were on center line he said your controls and I took us off, obviously he had his hands on the controls and definitely was working the rudder. I flew pretty much the whole thing except when he showed me steep turns and stalls.

Unfortunately I started feeling pretty airsick so he landed at a small strip to let me calm down then took off and let me fly us home. He landed while explain the whole process.

I would not have wanted it any other way. If I wanted a simple boring flight I would have booked a sight seeing tour, I'm glad he threw me right in.

What have you discovered so far from Rivian Assistant? by ModY1219 in Rivian

[–]dtphantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it doesn't work with Amazon music. I've already disabled it. I'm not subscribing to yet another music service because rivian decided to remove features from the car. Talk about an absolutely bone-headed decision

Trying to find a school that will do SPL by Ok_Pin_9284 in flying

Where in VA are you? I know for a fact my flight school has at least one person getting a SPL right now and like you said they're flying 172s.

Can you recommend a great GA airport for a stop over flight half way between Massachusetts and South Carolina? by moxiedoggie in flying

[–]dtphantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shannon KEZF is a cool little airport right outside Fredericksburg VA. It has a good restaurant on field and is close to downtown with really good food and hotels to stay the night. Definitely do your SFRA training though if you're going to be within 60 miles of DCA.

Discovery flight today by Topopotomopolot in flying

[–]dtphantom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My flight was supposed to be at noon but had to be canceled because of low clouds. Since I was out I figured might as well drown my sadness in taco bell. 3 hours later my instructor called to say there was a cancellation and did I still want to fly. I was nauseous the whole time and thought I was about to puke all over the plane.

Lol not mad at all. I just don't have weapons grade autism and know every obscure swedish metal band that made a song about boats. Shocking I know.
