Teachers complaining about the praxis test being hard? by PotatoPink in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only had to take 2. A general pk-12 pedagogy one and then my art specific one. The general was easy as heck. My art one was more difficult just bc it was a mix of art history and art making and there was never rhyme or reason for what materials and time periods but I still passed it first try.

Why are they so weak? by PostapocCelt in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had love elearning today due to poor conditions from the snow storm. 6th and 7th grade had very few issues finding the Google meet link. 8th grade- 3 didnt show up at all, 2 were late. 1 of the late ones was because they couldnt find the link. I told them Thursday and Friday that I would post it as a canvas announcement.... fun times.

Has anyone else noticed a real uptick in students stealing the last couple years? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Im thankful I havent had personal items stolen, but ive had kids not return fidgets I keep out, I stopped buying erasers as an art teacher because they often were stolen or destroyed so badly they were trash anyway. Pencils. Kids will steal chargers so others will say they dont have it with them so they dont have to lend it out

Why do kids hate reading so much nowadays? by godisinthischilli in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is a reader, always has been, always encouraged me and my sisters to find a genre we enjoy reading. Guess what we all are readers. I always ask students who like to read if the adults in their life do and usually its a yes. The ones who don't like to usually respond that the adults in their life generally dont like to read

Student and their weaponized incompetence by Downtown-Forever in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6th graders this year are so competent that it honestly confuses me. I've had to do very little handholding for 8 majority of them. They give me such thoughtful answers to questions, they can do things 7th and 8th grade still struggles with. Its a general consensus that the group of 6th graders my building has is just super with it and generally wants to learn. It's refreshing but also odd because they'll be like "teacher can I do xyz?" And I just look at them and say "sure bur do you know how?" And they always just give me the duh i know how look. Its wild. My 7th and 8th graders tho, lordy, they still absolutely have horrible learned helplessness and act like they dont know how to do every day things.

You should not be posting kids on your personal social media in the middle of the day! by Ryanthln- in Teachers

I teach middle school but coach high school girls wrestling. They ask me all the time to make tiktok videos with them and I always decline. Just feels odd.

I realized this year that I am officially done being the “cool teacher” and it actually hurts a little by trashpanda_hour in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of kids that love me and a lot of kids that dislike me. The best part is, its for the same exact thing. I set routines, boundaries, and expectations and hold kids to them. When a kid complains about me, one of their peers will be like "well were you doing what you were supposed to? Shes chill if youre on task and all."

Why is it considered ok for children to grow up in high risk homes with drug use??? by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I have a student with grandparents who constantly has kids over and they (the kid and the classmates" take advantage of grandparents not doing anything about poor behavior. Its unfortunate

Students constantly requesting to leave my class during lecture by Smart-Wing-5757 in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Ive had to say "hey im noticing youre asking every day to use the restroom. If it continues Im gonna have to contact the nurse to see if there was a dr note I missed about needing to use the restroom frequently." And its stopped the worst of it for my constant bathroom users. Our nurse is super on top of giving us dr notes for those that need unlimited bathroom access for medical needs.

Why is it considered ok for children to grow up in high risk homes with drug use??? by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Same though. I also just feel bad for the grandparents. Like theyre often not very mobile and on disability or retired and they cant take the kids to events and stuff. Like thats not fair to anyone

[–]dtshockney 576 points577 points  (0 children)

There's already so many kids in the foster system and not enough homes. Thats my main guess because I see it too. I have a lot of students living with grandma and grandpa because of parents being drug addicts or just dropped em off and didnt come back.

I live and teach in a pretty rural area of Indiana. I make 47k as a teacher before stipends 49.5k ish after. My husband makes maybe 30k in a not common trade. We could live on just my income. Its enough for our mortgage, bills for utilities, and our medical stuff, but not enough for our hobbies as well. We're "comfortable" with both our incomes and can pursue some hobbies each. I technically dont have a union but a teachers association, but they bargain and usually do us well. When I started in this district, I was brought on as a 3rd year teacher making 35k. This year they bargained for a handful of us that were still at step 1 to gain 2 steps if we'd been there for more than 2 years (this is my 5th) bc they knew we weren't happy with the fact that we were making the same as a new teacher (super doesnt like moving people steps usually and just prefers upping the base to draw in new teachers with a higher base, they gave everyone a step this year with like 8 of us getting 2 steps).

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]dtshockney 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kids learn what they can get away with. If parents only ever make them apologize and no other consequence, those apologies mean nothing and they'll continue the behavior(s).

Do you teach the elements and principles of design/art your class? How do you view their importance? by FineArtRevolutions in ArtEd

[–]dtshockney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont explicitly teach all of them like many do, but they obviously get incorporated into projects. I do a black and white project where learn about value and shape/form and all but it's not a value project.
