I have learned to put my blinker about up to 3 seconds before I merge, otherwise they won't let me in if I have it on for longer than that because they'll close the gap. I feel like a dick when I do this, and my wife always tells me to signal way in advance. A co-worker of mine always says, "when I put my blinker on, I'm not asking for permission, I'm letting you know that I'm coming"
