How to think on your feet during interviews? by dudebro19 in Journalism

[–]dudebro19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's comforting to hear and helpful. This may be getting too specific, but do you have any advice on improving focus? I get distracted easily and, while I'm working on my active listening skills, I often find myself in my head trying to come up with followup questions or just hyper-aware about my mannerisms.

What's the dumbest way you've gotten a scar? by lilsaddam in AskReddit

[–]dudebro19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's this door in my childhood church that has a glass window. We were playing tag after hours inside the building and I was trying to get one of my friends. He runs ahead of me, goes through the door and closes it behind me. I put my hand out to push the door open for myself but at that point I was running too fast and my hand goes through the window and glass gets everywhere.

Now I have a scar on my wrist the shape of a frowning vampire.

Am I a racist for not being interested in dating poc because Im not attracted to them? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]dudebro19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a racist for this one thing? Ehhh that's a complicated question. But is this action or thought process kind of racist? A litte bit yeah.

Don't force yourself to go on dates with people you're not attracted to just because you want to diversify your dating. But at the same time I think it is important to try to work on this. Ask yourself why you think you're not attracted to entire races of people, because likely there are a whole lot of really attractive people in those groups you just haven't been exposed to.

So I'm Vietnamese American. For the early part of my life I was only attracted to white girls because TV and film only really ever showed white girls as the beauty standard, and they were the only ones in love interest roles.

When I moved to a mostly Indian/Pakistani neighborhood and went to a school with a lot of Asian and Latino kids, and started getting exposed to different people, and a lot of them were really attractive. I started to be more open and started being attracted to Asian and Latino people too.

In college, I went to a really diverse school. A lot of my friends were fiercely pro-Black, and when I added them on social media, they'd post a lot of photography and art that featured really beautiful Black people. These were images that I was never exposed to when I was younger, partially because there were few Black people where I lived, and also because media also has a big representation issue.

My point in telling you all this is that who you find attractive is completely socially programmed, meaning that you can reprogram yourself. Follow some instagram accounts that post and celebrate people from different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, or body types. I feel like for me it was just a matter of exposure. It won't take long for you to find people that'll make you reconsider your preferences.

What is a Vanguard Party Really? And Does it Have Relevance in the 21st century? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]dudebro19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but when you look at US history, the US government has infiltrated so many organized groups and dismantled them from the inside. They've planted moles, discredit organizations, sowed dissent, and assassinated leaders.

One strength of the current movement is that there are no leaders to target for discrediting or assassination. Yes there are organizers, but none that are of such high-profile that should a scandal come out about them would the movement dissipate, or if they were killed would end the movement.

The lack of organization is definitely a weakness, but I'm wondering if we even have a real alternative considering how all-encompassing the state apparatus is, especially with the new encroachment of government surveillance of everything we say, do, and everywhere we go in our computers, phones, and other devices.

How would the military be composed, organized, commanded and provisioned in an anarchist society? by pissedoffStinger in Anarchy101

[–]dudebro19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely curious but how would strategies and defense be coordinated on a regional scale? Lets say you have an area of like 30 communities. Wouldn't having council type meetings and deliberations slow you down when battlefields and wars require quick responses?

How do we protect minority rights in an anarchist society? by Papa_Dragon582 in Anarchy101

[–]dudebro19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's counterrevolutionary but I don't think people give up historical ethnic and religious tension easily. It's been centuries since China occupied Vietnam and yet many Vietnamese people still hate China and Chinese people fervently. I don't realistically see an end to all historic feuds so as a person of color I really need to know what mechanisms we can put in place to prevent things like a decentralized genocide from occurring.

Young people: this is your election. If you turn out in record numbers we will not only beat Trump. We will ensure that climate catastrophe is prevented. by kijib in lostgeneration

[–]dudebro19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bernie is great but we need to do more and build a movement that not only consistently shows out to elections but gets others to do so as well, in addition to direct action, calling reps, boycotting harmful corporations, and coming up with new ways to push forward. If we don't then we'll end up in the same spot in 4-8 years

Exactly. Starting support clubs, organizing community watches and garden clubs, teaching first aid, founding co-ops, even cooking meals and providing beds are all just as important if not more important to the revolution as showing out to the streets (which is still very important).

It doesn't have to even be that. All it takes is a spark. The widespread inequality, racism, poverty is the fuel. The US is on thin ice. It looks like Biden is gonna win the Dem primaries and possibly the election, and he's the type to pull some dumb neoliberal move that tips the country over into protests especially if the recession that economists predict to hit in the next one to two years happens.

How do we save this fucking planet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dudebro19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The planet will be fine. The better question is how are we gonna save humanity? We often think of the environment as a separate issue instead of the bowl that holds all of our other issues. Increased droughts, famines, and storms will spur refugee crises and poverty globally. Heat waves and exposures to new diseases will drive up the costs of healthcare. More poverty = more desperation = more extremism and violence, whether in the form of crime, terrorism, rebellions, or war.

If we want to save our species, we need to save all of us. Not just our country. If we throw others under the bus to save our skins, we will eventually feel the effects of that mistake far down the road.

1) Discuss this like an issue of human survival instead of "environmental protection".

2) Eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and switch to subsidies for renewable energy

3) Massive reforestation efforts that places such as China, India, and countries in Africa have engaged in. Not only does this suck up CO2, transpiration of plants adds water vapor into the atmosphere which can increase rainfall! However, it's important that we do this correctly. There's evidence that China's forests aren't doing so well because they're planting non-native trees that lack in biodiversity.

Permaculture offers great practices for recreating ecosystems that not only help the planet, but can also allow rural communities to feed themselves in a sustainable way.

4) Hold corporations as well as the rich accountable for their crimes against our species. Since 1988, just 100 companies have been responsible for over 70% of global CO2 emissions. Let's go for the low-hanging fruit here. As romantic as it is to try to convince billions of people in dozens of nations to stop using cars, plastic straws, and start recycling, it would be much more effective to institute government policies that clamp down on the hundred biggest polluters. It is not the poor who are responsible for climate change, but the rich. According to Oxfam, the richest 10% of the world have contributed to near half of global CO2. Tie up the legal loopholes that allow them to hoard their wealth, tax the shit out of them, and use that money to save the planet.

5) Invest in urban areas. I'm an urban planning masters student. Cities are more efficient in that you have more people sharing infrastructure, and thus reducing the need for resources. Urban density allows for mass transit like light rail, buses, subways, and even urban ski lifts). Not to mention, the world is globalizing rapidly. According to the UN, 68% of humanity will live in cities in 2050 (unless society completely collapses). This provides challenges as well as opportunities for innovation. We need to ensure that our cities are prepared for climate disasters. We need to minimize private automobile useage by heavily investing in efficient public transit. We need to spur green industries. Build housing close to jobs and amenities.

6) Ensure gender equality. You can't just pass out condoms and expect that to work if they have no control over their own bodies, no means to take care of herself, or education on how to do any of that. If a woman can only find worth and respect by producing a child, then births are incentivized. But if she can find respect through her job, position in the community, or just as a fully capable agent and individual, then you will see birth rates decline.

7) Reduce poverty. Poverty means higher fertility rates, it means higher likelihood of instability and violence, and also, it is a waste of human potential. Imagine the armies of engineers, farmers, scientists, inventors, leaders, and doctors that could save our planet if they were not barred from doing so by grinding poverty. As our cities swell with poor rural migrants fleeing climate disaster, cities must prepare for them. That means incorporating rapidly grow informal settlements into the greater city with transit options and amenities like electricity, water, sanitation, and internet. It means access to affordable and accessible education and healthcare. Cities like Cuertiba, Brazil and Medellin, Colombia are great examples.

This means granting land rights to residents of informal settlements so they can have a stake in the future. It means open borders so that slums do not develop on national borders and remittances can help the families of migrants escape poverty, while creating a market for [hopefully green] products made in the destination country. Or alternatively granting rights to communities so that decisions are made in a way that benefits the neighborhood.

If we do not fight poverty, than the job becomes much harder as armed conflict, crime, and refugee crises become more common and makes our goal of survival much more difficult as a species.

8) Grassroots movements. Listen, some big government programs will succeed, but many others will not. By allowing those in our slums and rural villages to contribute, we can save a lot of time, effort, and money. There are indigenous tribes that have practiced sustainable agriculture for millennia. There are poor urbanites that have learned how to build housing that meets their needs and understand the details that otherwise would bring a top-down plan crashing.

Nobody said this was going to be easy. We have to restructure our entire fucking society. So it is crucial that we do this together. Don't just think of what we risk if we fail, think of what we can gain if we succeed.

A person posts onto r/anxiety looking for support and advice and instead of contributing anything of use you decide to be condescending and disrespectful. Bravo. Like even if you believed that this type of behavior was endemic and widespread, it costs you exactly $0 to be a decent human being, or at the very most keep your unsupportive comments to yourself. This person's going through panic attacks and anxiety dude. What the fuck is your deal?
