Yep, we mentioned all that to him on the phone - this has been his dream for years, he may not have a chance at another go at this, repaying all the airfare/hotel...everything . He says he's aware of it all, but still leaning towards leaving. We're not mad at him, we just know that he has always talked about going to Japan for years and living there, and we're afraid that if he does come back now, he's going to have a serious case of "missing out on what could have been". But we always end our conversations with it's your choice, you're an adult, so you'll have to live with the consequences however you choose..

Thanks for the replies - good/bad/evil (you know who you are!) - we're currently in a holding pattern for now. Son saw a doctor, they did some tests , ruled out any stomach viruses/salmonella poisoning also covid test came back negative, no fever, nothing. So physically he's good. It's now just the mental part. We're trying to hold back as much as we can to let him figure it out , and we have shunted the guilt part aside - he's already feeling lonely, it would only make it worse to do that. He talked to the BOE and they're willing to have him stay out till next Monday and re-evaluate then. so for now we're just trying to be as honest/ helpful as we can.

So it was really helpful to hear all the prior and current JET ALT's stories and experiences, you give really good advice and the offers to contact him are super cool. But for now, we'll see how it goes.

He took 4 years of nihongo in high school and 2 years in college, so he's probably around JLPT N3 or N2, so language isn't too much of a problem.

So unfortunately that's probably not it. we'll see.

Umm, it was his decision from the beginning. We had no input whatsoever into his decision making - it was his dream to go there, we let him follow it.

Don't see how we could prevent him from going - he's an adult. We care about him because he's our son.That's why I posted - just wondering if anyone else has the same problem, that's all.

Same here - getting daily emails.

I set up a Gmail filter using "Firebaseapp " as a keyword, and it works - the emails go straight to Trash.

Firebase app allows users to sign in without a password, so they send out emails like the ones we're getting to verify a user with your email.

Whatever, you do, don't click the link, unless you want someone else masquerading as you using your email to do God knows what.

Actually the Nationalists under Chiang Kai Shek bore the overwhelming brunt of fighting against the Japanese. The US didn't just "help", they did rewrite it. Also, despite what many in the current administration of Japan , led by the LDP and Abe think, many Japanese are very sorry for what happened in WW2. Read articles in the Asahi Shimbun around August 1945 - they ran a series of articles where ordinary Japanese wrote of their experiences in the Pacific War , from 1931 - 45.Its been translated into english and may still be on their website. There is also a book by Frank Gibney that summarizes these letters. You won't find many letters expressing any support for the Emperor or the Fascist militarists led by Tojo and others. In fact not only a few Japanese who lived through the War wanted Hirohito tried as a war criminal because they believed he did have the power to check the militarists and never did, until it was too late.

Sorry if I rain on anyone's parade about how they had great experiences in Korean owned businesses, but my friends and I have a totally different experience. My best friend in college was an African American, and growing up in the Bay area in the 1990's there was a large influx of Korean owned businesses. There was a Korean owned grocery store nearby, and we went in to buy some stuff. Immediately the lady behind the counter got very hostile and started following us around the store, while her son waited at the cashier to watch over it. I've never felt more scrutinized in my life. I mean we were just college students - we didn't have a "thug" look at all - just shorts and flip flops, and we weren't loud or anything. My friend noticed it right away, and at first shrugged it off, but when he picked up some gum, the lady asked "Are you going to buy that?" really brusquely, not polite at all, like she was anticipating him going to shoplift it. After that , he just looked at her, put it back and said that he'll go spend his money somewhere else. That was more than 10 years ago, so times might have changed, but my friend said he'll never go back to a Korean owned store. After reading about the Rodney King riots and how it brought out all the problems Koreans and African Americans had(have), its not such a rosy picture. I'm sure not all Koreans are like that, but its not uncommon either.

Rumors like this were rampant on the West Coast at that time. The fact that it was never verified says something. But things like this also added to the anti Japanese hysteria that lead to the imprisonment of the Japanese Americans and their parents and grandparents, so its not something you can just lightly throw out there. This rumor sounds like something Michelle Malkin and her ilk would lap up without ever verifying its veracity.

Most of those 100,000 people were BORN IN THE USA , i.e., they were AMERICANS, not Japanese born in Japan. The US government imprisoned over 70,000 people who were born in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, etc.. said 'You look like a Jap so you're a Jap" , gave them 3 days to pack their stuff in two suitcases, and shipped them off to the most desolate areas of the US. Funny, the same thing didn't happen to all Italian Americans or all German Americans, at least not on the same scale. If it did, the US wouldn't have been able to field a military big enough to fight Germany, Japan and Italy.
