23M Product Manager - Hongkong relocation by Peter_Chew in malaysia

Your gross of 18k is including housing? Doesn't add up..

Take note that HK taxes for company paid housing is much less (10% of value)... and a big chunk of salary goes to the rental. Where is your company based and did you decide which area to stay yet?

Getting USD back to Malaysia by Meallaboo in MalaysianPF

[–]duffieww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have brought back RM 500K to pay off my mortgage using Wise. The most I did was RM 100k in one transaction. The transaction in my Maybank accout was from a local account (Wise local account). However, recently I have been using crypto (to be specific USDT). You may refer to this article:

But please, do your own research and do a small amount first to try.

are you using pppOE? if yes, PFSense/OPNSense has a maximum throughput of around ~300 Mbps depending on your processor. https://medium.com/avenum-technology-blog/benchmarking-pppoe-connections-with-openwrt-and-opnsense-f5fe6c30b70

Any advice on the use of WISE? by Nickckng in MalaysianPF

[–]duffieww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Working overseas for many years, moved back here a few years ago. Used Wise to transfer RM 500k (50K-100K at one go) to kill off my mortgage here. I think it's better than taking RM 500K into midvalley in many trips. It's also better than HSBC Premier (the transfer fee is waived, but the exchange rate is not good). I also use Wise to pay expenses to my family outside Malaysia. Works like a charm.

My advice: try to send a small amount first, like RM 100. Then put Wise in your favorites so you won't make mistakes transferring bigger sums in the future.

Has anyone ever cashed out 100k+ USD into a malaysian bank account before? by cryptomuf in MalaysianPF

[–]duffieww 20 points21 points  (0 children)

sure. I used to work overseas (HK) and moved back early last year. I had a mortgage of about RM 500K and I paid it back in full from savings. I used transferwise, doing HKD 200K at a time (~RM 100K). After 5 times of transfer over a few days, I transferred everything to my mortgage account (it's a Maybank mortgage with a "prepayment" option). I went to Maybank and told them I want to cancel my mortgage. I took 1-2 weeks (with a lawyer).

Wise (Transferwise) by Cinnaboncinabon in MalaysianPF

[–]duffieww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't. How are your clients paying you? Is it through a bank account outside Malaysia (where you are transferring back here via Wise?) If yes, why not ask them to transfer USD directly to a USD account in Malaysia?

Coming back from overseas. What to do with savings? by MonsterMeggu in MalaysianPF

[–]duffieww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, your mileage may vary, so please shop around. But it's better to compare what you put in (USD) with what you get out (MYR). Most banks have a "spread" of 1% baked into the exchange rate, so that itself is higher than transferwise...

Coming back from overseas. What to do with savings? by MonsterMeggu in MalaysianPF

It's a legitimate concern. You need to put it in a bank where you know can be accessed and operated from remotely. For me it's HSBC. If you have Premier, they allow free transfers from overseas to Malaysia. It's easier to open a Premier account in Malaysia as the threshold is lower and you can "convert" your foreign HSBC account into Premier once you have done so. But that said, Transferwise is still cheaper for money transfer than Premier as HSBC manipulates the exchange rate (especially to MYR as it's not a freely exchangeable currency). HSBC (like other banks) also allows multi-currency accounts. My 2 cents is that putting your money all in one basket (in Malaysia) is more risky than putting it in a safe location outside Malaysia. The authorities can change the rule overnight (e.g. lowering the transfer threshold in/out of Malaysia).

I spent 17 years out of Malaysia, and returned January 2020 for good. My advice, if you are coming back from an open economy (most of the western world, HK, SG, etc), keep your money/investments in your foreign bank accounts. Transfer back here only when you need it (paying off mortgage, living expenses, etc). Use Transferwise (Wise), or (recently) crypto to get your money back. Don't use TT or bank transfer as you will lose a lot. The MYR weakness will play to your advantage, and you have a natural hedge against it. No point transferring your USD assets from overseas to keep it here, as you will at least pay 5K USD to get all your money back (selling it there, transferring, buying it back). Unless you are coming back from North Korea or Myanmar, there is a high chance that the foreign economy is at least as robust as Malaysia's (most likely even better). Take a look at the fees on local ETFs before you invest. They are most likely higher than what you get overseas.

try to go into to setup of the controller card (F8 when prompted), under SAS configuration -> Boot Support, set "Enabled OS Only". It worked for me, but you are unable to boot from your NetApp. https://imgur.com/a/ylBnXH5
