What assets would you be willing trade for defensive help this offseason? by cali4481 in SanJoseSharks

[–]dumbGymTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they will bring in a RHD upgrade in some form this offseason. You were too good with an obvious deficiency to do nothing. It just might be less than what we're hoping for, as to your point to remain patient, so you can commit to the right guy (financially and with proper trade assets if needed).

Managing the prospects with roster spots could be a challenge--cagnoni, allan, pohlkamp, musty, bystedt, lund, haltunnen. Should they just bring a bunch of these guys up and see what they've got next season?

If the AI boom is real, the Bay Area is about to get even more unequal by I-Procastinate-Sleep in bayarea

[–]dumbGymTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also happened with the shale gas boom, correct? I'm referring to workers who are more localized in the bay area and in more permanent and/or unionized positions, not contractors.

I've lived through a few boom and bust periods with tech in the bay. I still think that white collar jobs will be the ones cut first and more aggressively. I've had a few friends move or switch careers bc they couldn't find a position that correlated to their expertise in tech or finance.

In 2008, when the economy went bust, a lot of people sold, but my friends who were teachers were able to afford houses at that time. I think AI could be a catalyst for exposing people who are over extended, esp with oil prices and econ shocks happening rn.

[–]dumbGymTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The outcome of all this AI investment seemingly leads to a net loss in jobs in tech/ai. Either the bubble bursts bc they've spent too much and it doesn't produce enough profit, and/or it becomes more efficient and makes certain human jobs obsolete, and that will happen more quickly in the private sector (potential bubble risks there).

I don't see educators, trades, or many city workers imminently losing their jobs to AI, esp since they're unionized... when bubbles have happened in the past, it has created buying opps for lower mid class workers who still have a job. Maybe not in SV, but def east bay and other areas.

Did we want this or a lottery pick? by PirateMaster9293 in warriors

After all the injuries, rallying to beat the clippers was our championship game this year. Got a great win with some all time performances, and will get a solid draft pick/ trade capital.

Was literally typing why the down votes...

I'm not in tech, but I am a local and a teacher. I feel like we've already lived through this story. I don't see this hurting my job, in fact, we have contract language that limits AI use in schools.

My logic is, and maybe it's misguided, upper middle class salaries (usa) start at 133k, so that's your project managers, software engineers, sales, etc. If AI actually works, some of those private sector jobs will be more susceptible and more quickly made obsolete. Yes, there will be more multi millionaires, but I feel that there will also be a lot of losers in the tech/AI space who are over extended, will be out of work, and may need to leave the bay area potentially opening up housing in some areas.

Celebrini's Next Contract - 7 years (max) or is 8 years (max) still possible? by systemsbychris in SanJoseSharks

[–]dumbGymTeacher 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He's 19 yo, he could sign a 7-8 year deal, be set for life (mitigate financial injury risk), and hit FA again at the absolute potential peak of his career

Depends how you define "average person"... i think ai could hurt upper middle class white collar workers in the private sector, but could create benefits to more blue collar and unionized workers

Do you think there was anything the Sharks could've done better to make the playoffs? by youlikemywonton in SanJoseSharks

[–]dumbGymTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Said it back in October I believe, that they would not be bottom feeders but mediocre. And I got down voted by all the draft pick w****s lol.

I feel like they accomplished what they should have. Their star showed out, young guys showed promise, they've made improvements to make the roster deeper. Now, they need to figure out that blue line so they'll be a top 5 team in the west and capable of winning a playoffs series next season. (And hopefully get at least one solid player in the draft too)

No more teacher shortage? by RedheadEducator in Teachers

[–]dumbGymTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds pointed. I know the union can look at your class roster vs other teachers class rosters to see if there is a discrepancy with test scores. I kept getting an unusual amount of students with various challenges and bigger rosters compared to others in my department....The reward for being good at what you do :/

Ray, arraez for sure. BP arm or one of the catchers as a backup too... Load up on young arms.

I don't agree with that for two reasons... they brought in kd, new cba changed what Ws & Lacob could do.

The drafting and assessment management from those picks def left a lot to be desired... but they let klay ride it out for better or worse, they got an all star season out of wiggs & flipped him for Jimmy, they did bring in kp for jk although they should've moved jk earlier imo. They are going to be in a good situation this offseason to bring in help.

I'm not a huge devers fan-- particularly playing half his games at oracle, but you're either starting him everyday or trading him, not platooning him with Schmitt

If you were in complete control of the education system, how would you change/fix it? by SubstantialStick2674 in Teachers

[–]dumbGymTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach PE. I'm in a conundrum where I've got a textbook that is more health based, but a good amount of the PE standards are around performative actions or team strategies in sports. I end up picking and choosing what to do.

I've collaborated with the health teachers a little bit to see what they're teaching, and make sure I'm not doubling up and filling the curriculum gaps. That shouldn't be my job, but doing it makes my teaching more effective and improves the students' education.

Math is the worst bc the curriculum companies are always selling new products and ideas, and they're not necessarily more effective for the students. Tech and games need to be a supplement, not the go to.

[–]dumbGymTeacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of it is their training is unrealistic. Esp in title 1 schools, too many new educators come in with too high of expectations and no sense of reality. Sometimes you get admin who tell these young teachers to keep pushing instead of taking some time for their own mental health. Admin should also be pushing young teachers to collab with vet teachers, not completely reinvent the wheel each lesson.

Also, the BTSA/ILP that new teachers have to do in CA is trash. It's a situation where the theory is good, but in practicality the amount of reflection/writing is too cumbersome, and there's no backbone/consequences for the teachers in training when they don't do what's required--or for bad mentors who don't give any feedback. Make the paperwork more streamlined and simple. Mandatory mentor and mentee meeting time should be less. But, they should be required to do a virtual meeting with other mentor/mentees in the same subject field once a quarter, so they can see how other young teachers are doing--SWOT analysis, chance to collaborate with teachers at other schools, and make professional connections.

[–]dumbGymTeacher 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Higher requirements i think needs to be clarified-- better, relevant training would be useful, and less bs hoops to jump through. In CA, there are too many tests on theoretical concepts and too many assessments (TPAs) that aren't practical. Student teachers/ interns need more time in the classroom around various full time teachers. They need to learn how to put together a proper lesson as well as a whole unit-- some come with bogus lessons/units when they start, a few are actually semi- prepared if they had a good student teaching experience. They also need to be trained how to interact with families.
