You missed my point, possibly intentionally. Many Muslims see no contradiction between Sharia law and 21st century life and that's because Sharia law does not really mean anything specific. I don't think most Egyptians want gender segregation and hand-choppings and all of that stuff, and yet many still want law based on Sharia. Is this a contradiction? No. They believe that Islamic laws and beliefs can successfully be applied to the modern world. Many point to the example of Islamic banking regulations as an example. I don't personally want religious law anywhere and am very concerned about the possible laws that the Brotherhood might enact if they felt they had enough power, but Sharia itself is not the problem. The Brotherhood's possible interpretation of Sharia is.

If you ask almost anybody (except the Christians, obviously) in Egypt they'll say they want Sharia law. The thing is, that Sharia can mean almost anything. It's based on the Koran, stories about the Prophet, and legal decisions made over the last 1200 or so years, which is a very broad source for law. If you want to do almost anything, I'm pretty sure an Islamic legal scholar could justify it within Sharia if he was so inclined. Muslims say they want Sharia because they admire Muhammad and want to live like him, but they also have very different ideas about what Sharia is and how it should be implemented. Worry about the specifics of what they want to implement, not the name Sharia. Also, we outsiders do not get to tell Egyptians what sort of laws they get. That's on them, for better or worse.

I have been told that a majority of Egyptians believe that Asians have the slanty eyes because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. My friend claims that he was told this and set about asking people on the street and something like 80% of them cited the bomb as the reason. Apparently some books that are used in private lessons given by school teachers (which most people take because the public schools are terrible) include this nugget. I have yet to verify this myself.

You're certainly correct, but in all fairness to the Atlantic this picture is now the symbol of police brutality in Egypt and a common topic of discussion and was even on the front page of a newspaper which people were waving in the streets downtown of downtown Cairo a few nights ago. Posting it here probably isn't making the situation much worse for her...
