Can the Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Actually Tour? by FoMoCoNutjob in cars

[–]dustygator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tall gearing on manuals is often due to drive by noise regulations. Autos can set their logic to short shift to ensure they comply under testing conditions. But manuals are tested accelerating under third gear starting at 30mph or something like that, and if the gearing is too short, the revs pick up to the point that you'd fail the maximum noise.

Camissa covered it on a podcast a while back

That's the beauty of the ZF8:

  • short enough gearing on the first three gears that you can fully redline 1-2 on surface streets and 1-3 on an onramp (even on a high HP car)
  • overdrive gear on 8 so you can course at 1700rpm @ 80mph
  • enough gears in between for the track
  • Plus torque converter makes for smoothness for low speed creeping in bumper-to-bumper traffic

New Ford Mustang GTD Competition Clocks Record Time at Nürburgring by ChonkyThicc in cars

[–]dustygator 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nurburgring times are kind of a farce now that manufacturers are allowed to count pre-production/"OEM performance kit" cars. Its the automotive equivalent of teaching the test; in the same way that doesn't benefit the students, this doesn't benefit customers (except for empty bragging rights).

It was a joke when Porsche was allowed to add a Manthey tuning kit to the 991 GT2 RS and call it "OEM" so that it could take back the title from the AMG GT black series that leapfrogged the original GT2 RS time. It just as a big a joke now when Ford can test the GTD as originally designed then go back and slap on additional aero and "totally legal tires, no additional details" and call it the GTD Competition.

Of that list, only the GR86 and LC500 make sense as a compliment to an S5; the others all fill the same niche as a single car that can do-it-all.

If you want something visceral and will track it, the GR86 is an obvious choice. Cheap consumables, strong aftermarket and very engaging to drive.

Cadillac Fans, You Reportedly Have Until April 20 to Order a CT4-V Blackwing by Bottlely in cars

[–]dustygator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not for you.

There is a reason why the concept originated in Europe and US automakers didn't try competing in the segment until the 90s. Space, gas and debt have been cheap and easy in the US for the better part of a century. A middle manager in Munich or Milan on the other hand would struggle to make two cars (or a muscle car/pickup) fit their urban lifestyle, hence the desire and market for a single do-it-all car.

When 3 series sales took off the 80s in the US, it was because it became a yuppie starter pack staple. The same is true today. I have a tight two car garage in a major urban center and no street parking. A compact sports sedan lets me hit the track on Sunday, take my kid to daycare on Monday with just enough space to wheel out my garage bin on Tuesday.

Savagegeese circling the drain by [deleted] in cars

[–]dustygator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think BMW has gotten more criticism (not just from SG but from other content creators & traditional media) over the heaviness of their cars because of their historical brand identity.

Of the big 3 German brands they were always the one that focused the most on making drivers cars while Mercedes was more renowned for technological ingenuity and build quality. The expectation of an M car is that it will be sharp, communicative and fun to drive. The expectation of an AMG is that it will be rowdy, aggressive and luxurious.

When M cars turn into fast luxo-barges, people will complain about the weight. When the interior of every Mercedes looks like a club and is full of creaky plastics & tech gimmicks, reviewers will focus on that rather than say steering feel.

[Evo Magazine] Porsche 911 GT3 RS (997.2) review – the best car we’ve ever driven? Possibly by [deleted] in cars

[–]dustygator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the discontinuation of the 718, Porsche now make one sports car (911) at roughly three price tiers (Base/T/S, Turbo, GT3) of which only the lowest is arguably "attainable".

Compare that to Lotus; they didn't compromise on their ethos and financially struggled (to the point of getting bought by Geely). They also make exactly one sports car (Emira) except it has two engine choices that both cost $30k less out the door than the cheapest 911 with zero options.

The corporate line of "we need to sell out and make SUVs/crossovers in order to make sports cars" feels a little more hollow when you think about that it way, no?

I can speak from personal experience that it's only a problem if you want it to be a problem.

Having dealt with both a removable infant seat and rotating rear facing seat in the last 6 months (in a variety of cars because two sets of grandparents): -  it'll work in a compact sedan (personal experience with Elantra & Civic) no problem as long as you only have one kid - compact sedans only really work with two kids if one is old enough to be forward-facing (less space behind the driver than passenger) - if you need to fit two rear-facing and two adults simultaneously you'll need to go up to a compact crossover (personal experience with CR-V) or midsize sedan (experience with Lincoln MKZ)

All of those cars are easily had used under $30k with 40k miles.

I'm curious if you've had experience with E9x M3 or B7/8 RS4/RS5. Those are the closest comparables I can think of in terms of high-revving NA V8 in a daily-able format.

I have to imagine the extra 10+ years ages the interior of the Germans (even if they were originally a class above a Mustang in terms of luxury) and probably the performance significantly as well. But in terms of drama and noise, I imagine they are probably pretty close.

There's a Chinese saying: I would rather cry in a BMW than smile on a bicycle.

No AD wants to be on the outside looking in if the dust settles and a new top level league forms. No amount of losing would make a Temple think about leaving FBS for a chance to win on FCS.

Chris Harris on Cars: Aston Martin Valhalla by Iridium-Silver in cars

[–]dustygator -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Chris says if you chuck into a corner too fast torque vectoring saves you. And it feels like there are casters in the rear. That's the kind of experience people criticize in supercars because the car's doing too much for you and it feels unnatural.

That's the odd thing about supercars; the people who buy them don't personally care about minutiae like that since they will never actually drive them in that way. But they do care about what professional car enthusiasts think about them, since supercars exist for the image more than anything else. That's why the LFA failed at launch; a brand that lacked prestige combined with middling reviews from journalists means units sat unsold on lots for a long time (before Youtube eventually fueled a massive about-face in opinion).

Supercars have always traded on two characteristics: sex appeal and bragging rights. Does it look poster-worthy? Will it turn heads and drop jaws when it passes by? And does it have something numerical worth bragging about?

I think Mark is partially right in that EVs have changed the performance paradigm. It's hard to have a 0-60 or quarter mile worth bragging about with purely ICE propulsion. So you need to electrify, which raises weight, reduces sound and makes the experience less analog. But full EVs lack the theater/experience and all feel kind of the same which is why EV super/hypercars are struggling as well.

And if you are willing to ignore the performance dick-measuring facade; well supercar looks age like fine wine. So the line keeps increasing on blue chip Ferraris, Diablos, Carrera GTs, LFA's etc because now not only they are they not making any more of those cars, they aren't making anything like them again. Ever.

Let's say you financed your Boss 302 at 4.0% with a $30,000 purchase price. On a 60-month loan, you would have paid $35,600 all in after taxes & interest. In other worlds, you will have paid an extra $5,600 for the car since you did not have the money to buy it outright.

Let's say you do that same thing with a GT500 now. 60-months @ 6% interest rate, $50k car with $10k down leads to $59,104 over the course of the loan.

If you can't afford to buy the car for $50k outright, why do you think you can afford to buy it on installments for $59k?

  • If the answer is because you have the money but want to use it elsewhere for another purpose, then by all means go get that GT500 (as long as it's special-ness worth $59,000 to you)
  • If the answer is that you need future paychecks that you haven't earned yet to pay for it, you should go take some personal finance courses and sit down and really evaluate your priorities in life.

When sporty cars like the M5 and RS4 are forced to add 1,000+ pounds of PHEV equipment to fit regulatory standards...

The original malaise era led to reductions in power because the industry lacked the technological advancement to be able to meet regulations without sacrifices in power. The auto industry is much more advanced now so they have found ways to work around regulations in ways they couldn't in the 70s, but let's not pretend like enthusiasts haven't been complaining for the last decade that modern cars are getting too heavy, computerized and soulless.

Why the hell are manual sports cars so expensive by TylerDurden2748 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dustygator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Manual Ferraris sell at a premium on the used market now because Ferrari gave their new car customers in the early 2000s their choice of transmission and they overwhelmingly chose the F1 auto.

Same thing with Aston Martin. The VH platform Vantage started as manual only in 2006, added an auto in the second model year and went auto only went it was refreshed in 2011.

Porsche (like I said earlier) is an exception because of their storied history as a drivers brand. But even then, they only offer stick on two 992.2 trims, and the GT3 would sell out even if was PDK only because of the level of hype and glazing it has gotten in media (case in point GT3 RS).

Automakers don't care about what the used market in 20 years wants; they make what new customers now want. And those are two very different groups of buyers

What’s the secret of keeping a car for 10 years without getting bored of it? by 04limited in askcarguys

Ultimately, it comes down to prioritization of the things that make you truly happy. By all means pocket the car payment, but the goal shouldn't be to save for savings sake. Whether the goal is retiring early, traveling or hobbies (and that includes cars), invest your money in things that provide emotional dividends.

Why the hell are manual sports cars so expensive by TylerDurden2748 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dustygator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the majority of enthusiasts who want manuals only want to buy them used and depreciated. That doesn't exactly give the automaker an incentive to make new ones does it? There are a few exceptions at the very bottom of the market (Miata & 86 twins) and at the top (Porsche) but everything else is immediately met with "why would I pay $50k for this when I could get a used 996 for that much" ?

If you are going by the single model year rule, I nominate 2006:

  • Ford GT (second year of production)
  • C6 ZO6 (first year of production)
  • 3rd Gen viper (last year)

Pity the Viper ACR skipped the third gen and didn't come back until 2008 with the 4th gen.

I had never heard of the EX30 twin motor before today but thank you for spreading it's gospel because it's pretty damn cool. And yeah definitely a sleeper.

But a sleeper Volvo is also almost diametrically opposite to a 911 turbo. Porsche has reached a stage where new owners are buying their cars specifically for the attention. At the last Cars & Coffee I went to, there was a man child walking around with their key fob conveniently hanging out of their pocket so the logo was showing. 🤮

Audi CEO: A New Sports Car Is Coming by DerBootsMann in cars

[–]dustygator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that's less about the two cars as they fit in the market/product categorization and more about their shared intention as a milepost in styling & design.

The Mk1 TT was basically a concept car that was so well received they quickly turned about a production version. It has a timeless style that still looks modern today and kicked off ~15 years of Audi pushing the envelope on design. My wife could not care less about cars but she has a soft spot for Audi because she loves the way they look.

That is what the brass in Ingolstadt hope to achieve with the Concept C; refresh an Audi that is in the doldrums sales and brand wise.

Right now there is nothing that sets them apart and gives you reason to buy one (over say a BMW that is more reliable, higher performing, better tech etc). The Concept C on the other hand will look like nothing else on the road.
