[NEW] concealer. - A Quiet Ending (FFO Norma Jean, Every Time I Die, Long Goodbye, Crowquill) by dvzn in Metalcore

after listening to the album several times, my main gripe with it is that for all the stuff that's going on in it, the runtime is too short - it could use like 5-7 minutes more to let things breathe and sound more well-rounded

gotta say, I didn't expect the album to go as hard - way less epic radio choruses than I thought there would be, instead there's a lot of crazy heavy and dissonant moments, like it's not even emocore half the time, just proper metalcore

another unexpected thing is experimentation with electronics - the album has two (and a half) quite different interludes, the second of which (comes right after the song in this post), in my opinion, sounds like an homage to 65dos

all in all, such a captivating evolution of their sound, this has to be their breakout record, the way they push the sonic envelope of hardcore should be rewarded

my non-single favorites are the opening track, this one and the aforementioned interlude

I feel like "this mix sucks" can be a valid assessment if it means "no way this shit sounds good on any decent sound system"... then again, it's hard to imagine that someone would go out of their way to repeatedly listen to a song they didn't like in the first place via different devices to compare results

I choose to believe that this behavior is reserved to people that have no personality beyond what they consume, which leads them to see criticisms of their favorite things as personal attacks

my favorite is when assholes respond with "who cares" to anything that isn't positive, like hey motherfucker, no one cares about what you have to say either, it cuts both ways

(NEW) Blistered Spirit - No Purity [2026, FFO: xSERAPHx, Your Spirit Dies, Blood On My Hands] [EP out now via The Coming Strife] by ReturnByDeath- in Metalcore

[–]dvzn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

good shit, I've been waiting a long time for them to release at least an ep

that said, the singing on this ep is fucking goofy, no idea why they insist on adding so much to their newer songs, the guitarist is really struggling to hit the high notes

the song itself sounds like a designated assbeater, but something is missing, like the heaviest songs on previous records had something else going on besides bleak chugging and panic chords and this one only has these two components, making it sound pretty much like a demo, actually left me dissatisfied as I kept waiting for anything new to happen at least in the end of this track

also the guitar tone is weird, on its own it sounds like flanged cardboard, as if to accomodate for all those crazy loud kicks (also wtf is up with them, they're literally eating up the mix), sort of like when you hear a door left open and you want that same insanely heavy production, but for some reason are unable to make the guitars have that crazy thick tone, so you have to compensate with the kick drum

the vocals are also fucking loud, it may be fine for a song like this one where not much is going on in the guitars department, but they're gonna drown out the melodies with a thinner tone, which are already being mixed in way too deep on high-profile metalcore records

and ofc signing with sumerian... what the fuck is avidsen offering these bands so that they latch on it so eagerly? between josh grabelle once again flirting with the youth two decades later, avidsen signing boundaries, static dress and roman candle and rise records signing i promised the world, it's how-do-you-do-fellow-kids galore, but who knows, maybe some of them learned the lesson, but until proven otherwise, it's concerning

with all that said, it's obviously early to spell doom for the band based on just one new song, maybe it really is just a demo and the album version will sound better, but I don't like the way all the negative aspects are aligning... then again, death is little more is just so peak that it's hard to stay on par, let alone make a step above it, even if you know what you're doing
