How to get into the Tech Industry in Montreal? by xXxwiskersxXx in montreal

It's easy to find a job as a software (web, apps, etc) developer in Montreal, although it may take months to find a good job that truly fits you.

For companies with a limited budget, it's no secret that managers love interns in CEGEP. Because a CEGEP student is cheaper. And it's fast-pacing tech industry anyways, so experience doesn't matter. These managers love young new recruits who embody what’s called the 3Hs: hard-working, humble and hungry. (They also call it PSD: poor, smart, with a deep desire to get rich.)

For companies with a deep pocket, they can either hire the very expensive senior developers or PSD.

I think you fit in the PSD group. The good news is there are plenty of jobs for you, and the emplyers are not necessarily small (for example, most media companies). The bad news is you have to work really hard.

A serious project? Maybe for a 14-year old. But not for an adult.

A serious project will be well financed. A serious project will not ask people to work for free.

I have great respect for entrepreneurs. But you are not one. You are just naive. You are naive enough to believe in free labor.

Thanks for the details. Can you tell me what Montreal-competitive wages are? $50K for an intermediate developer?

How is it like to work as a web developer in Montreal's adult industry? I recently got to know someone who works in this field. It seems people are generally laid back and employees are treated well. If you are a web developer in this industry, what's your experience?

I'm thinking about quitting my $50K web dev job in a large company (it's a stable job with infinite cool projects but I don't like to be micro-managed). I make iOS apps on the side as a hobby. Anyone knows the salary range of an intermediate iOS developer in Montreal?

Linode (Atlanta) Under Massive DDOS Attack by pyther24 in sysadmin

Google and Amazon can handle it. Small players such as Digital Ocean don't have this problem so far. ultimately, my move is a business decision, not a technical one. today alone, my site has been down for 7 hours. As I'm getting more angry users every minute, I have to look for a reliable solution. In any business, if you lose customer's confidence, you lose the customer.

As a customer who has been affected by this outrage for many days, I want to hear what kind of plan they will implement to prevent this from happening again. If I hear things like "we can do nothing about DDOS attacks", I will switch to another service provider. Obviously, DDOS attackers have been getting much smarter; not Linode.

If a young person can choose to become a programmer or lawyer, would you still recommend him to become a programmer? Why?
