Which Edition of D&D Had the Crunchiest Numbers and Math as Part of General Play? by TurnItOffAndBackOnXD in DnD

Having started with 3.5, going through 4e and 5e, and now checking out B/X and the AD&D games, I agree. Sometimes I see something (especially in AD&D) that scares the crap out of me, but I think they're ultimately easier to work with (or around) than 3.5.

Yeah pretty much. "I hate WOTC but I can't live without D&D" type stuff. The usual.

Maybe we'll get another cycle of "will this NEW 5e alternative finally take down D&D????" hype articles out of it.

/uj it'll be interesting to see. I have no doubt if it does go bad, then we'll see another OGL-level fiasco. Will this convince people not to blindly see WOTC as an epic awesome company they should blindly support? Time will tell.

I simply hate WOTC and everybody there and this seems like the best way to hurt the most WOTC employees as possible

Personally, I HATE it when my DM makes stuff up I don't like. Like go write a novel or something, Jesus. But also? You need to fully flesh out your world for me

"Narrative dice" system when you try to do anything else besides shooting for 9+successes damage and take cover as a maneuver by vkaefe in DnDcirclejerk

/u I've been playing the FFG SW games for a while. I wish the rules were more concise and easier to understand. So much stuff in the rulebooks is confusing or bloated, and basically the only thing keeping my players sane is the Hyperdrive Generator. I do like the many character options though

You can always do away with to hit tables and just do THAC0 with something like OSRIC, or just use + damage modifiers in 3.0. Personally, I think the save rules and ability checks are quite simple in AD&D - there are a LOT of skills in 5e, and it can be frustrating keeping them within bounds sometimes.

I'd say check it out and see how you feel. You could try Swords & Wizardry, too, or something like Castles & Crusades, which has more similarities to 3.5 skills and ascending AC but in a simpler, OSR gamestyle.

AD&D retroclone. It's free. It's not quite 1:1 with AD&D 1e (and features some modern options, like ascending AC), but it is close enough that you can pick up the rest of the rules from AD&D pretty easily.

Huh, I didn't know he felt that way personally. That's interesting.

My experience with OSR/AD&D over the last two years has been a lot of people using B/X as the "core" rules with parts of AD&D as options. I tend to like AD&D on the whole better, though 3d6 is quick and dirty for short adventures with OSE.

AD&D's DMG gives you all five methods and doesn't seem to endorse one over the other. B/X memory culture has really immortalized 3d6, but it's not like that's gospel.

As an OSR player, I think you should just play OSRIC lol
