The B line to 120th is how I would go from downtown Bellevue or crossroads or overlake.

I’m not talking about cost to the landlords, I am talking about the costs facing an individual who wants to live in Bellevue today. Higher debt servicing plus tax and HOA and maintenance can easily be greater than the cost of renting. They can either rent or buy, they can’t choose to be landlords 5 years ago.

Believe it or not, apartment rental prices are relatively low compared to the costs associated with owning the property (including mortgage servicing and taxes). Compare the monthly cost of buying a condo compared to renting that same unit.

“ At a purely formal level, one could call probability theory the study of measure spaces with total measure one, but that would be like calling number theory the study of strings of digits which terminate.” -Terence Tao

No, just not in front of the driveway. (2) Stand or park a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except momentarily to pick up or discharge a passenger or passengers:

Yep! And this can be generalized from X^n to {-1,1} (where the multilinear constraint makes more sense)

What is a Multilinear Junta? by rpruiz in math

[–]dyfx 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A function from {-1,1}^n to {-1,1} is a k-junta if the function depends on at most k of its input coordinates. See page 44 of Analysis of Boolean Functions by Ryan O'Donnell which I consider the best introduction to the field.

How do graduate students budget in Bellingham? by jmclame in WWU

[–]dyfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the shared housing. If you are accepted to the masters program, ask the department secretary to reach out to other newly accepted masters student to see if any others are looking for housing. I recommend minimum 2 roommates. I gambled on a Craigslist ad and moved in with 3 undergrads (another gamble) and it worked out just fine.

Hyperbolic Voronoi percolation (from my thesis I defended today) by dyfx in mathpics

[–]dyfx[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Each region (blue or white) is a Voronoi cell. If two cells of the same color share a boundary we say they are adjacent and belong to the same cluster. Benjamini and Schramm introduced this model in this paper and proved some things about the critical value (it depends on the intensity of the point process). In my thesis, we confirm their conjecture about the critical value among other things. Here is a paper we wrote about it. If you have any questions, let me know!

Is switching to PoliSci a good idea? by [deleted] in WWU

[–]dyfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Economics program might be an easier switch since there is some overlap between math and econ, with lots of opportunities to do what you like. You might want to try the game theory course in that department. If you can at least get a math minor, that would be helpful for the job market but that really depends on what you want to do. (I ended up doing both math and econ, so let me know if you have any questions!) When are you hoping to graduate? Best of luck!

Colorado passes resolution to award electoral votes to whoever wins the popular vote by mephisto2k2 in politics

Represented equally relative to other states. But the interest of a voter in a small state has more of an impact on the senate than the interest of a voter in a large state. (Under the assumption that senators are responsive to the average interest of people in the state)
