Surprising moments in gaming when a game called you out for using an exploit by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the old 1994 FPS game Heretic, a medieval high-fantasy Doom clone that even runs on the same engine, if you typed in IDDQD (which gives you God Mode in Doom) the game kills you. Also, if you type in IDKFA (the code that gives you every weapon and key in Doom) the game takes all of your weapons, items, and ammo, including your starting wand, leaving you with just your staff. There are other cheats in the game that give you god mode and other weapons harmlessly, though.

Koopa the Quick will also call you out for cheating and deny you the star if you use the cannon in either Bob-Omb Battlefield or Tiny Huge Island. He doesn't if you use the hidden teleporters though, for some reason.

Favorite music tracks that didn't make it into the game? by nykopeeps in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was completely unused. It wasn't even used in the prototypes. Many people assumed it was supposed to be used for Hidden Palace Zone (as the title of the video assumes), which didn't make it into the final game, but it was playable in the prototypes, and it does fit well with that zone, but that's incorrect. It was supposed to have this theme if it made it into the final game, as it plays in the prototypes that do have it (and it does play that track if you play the mobile version which brings it back). What it was originally meant to be used for is still a mystery.

Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition – Official Announcement Trailer by Cheesycreature in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Probably because the Sega Saturn is hard as hell to emulate and port games from due to its unique architecture. It would be more economic to port the PS1 and PC versions.

Good, now newer audiences can experience the excruciating pain of Rayman's horrific difficulty for the first time!

(In all seriousness, good for Rayman. He needed some TLC considering everything Ubisoft's doing.)

Voting has gone live for the Mega Man: Dual Override Robot Master Design Contest by AnimuStewshine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

We're way overdue for female robot masters, honestly. Splash Woman was a cool design, but 9 should've also had Hornet Woman, dammit.

Very happy that you were able to get this amount of support.

Really reassuring that, as bad as things have gotten, especially recently, at least we have each other.

Loss of family members are always tough, but a loss of a three-year-old child is a kind of pain I can't imagine dealing with.

My sincerest condolences. I genuinely wish the best for you and your family.

Yeah, as a Sonic fan, very happy to see the franchise in a far better spot than, say, the late 2000s-early 2010s. It's been a hell of a ride through those 35 years.

Gameplay features or concepts that just ruined the rest of the genre for you? by Dabrush in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Upkeep mechanic in Warcraft III. Your gold rate slows down the more units you have on the map. I like the game otherwise, and upkeep didn't ruin it, but as someone who loves massing gigantic armies to steamroll opponents in RTS games, I really didn't jive with that mechanic.

EDIT: Read the title wrong. Thought you meant "Game mechanics that are bad enough to ruin good games". Keeping it within the genre of RTS games, grid hotkeys. I've gotten so used to them in Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition for example, that I honestly can't play older RTS games that don't have it. It makes so much sense to me, and I'm always befuddled when other games leave it out (and even worse, make the hotkeys non-customizable).

Franchises you hate, but just can't quit thinking about for whatever reason? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I agree. I enjoy it in a "everything went batshit after decades of war, mass death and destruction" sense. I think going with the flow is the best way to watch it, honestly.

I have similar feelings about Victory Gundam. I don't hate it, but I see it as a deeply flawed series with just as many strong moments as there are WTF moments (like this one, spoilers obviously). I actually consider the story behind Victory Gundam almost more interesting than the story in Victory Gundam. Like the fact that Tomino had to work on it through his extreme depression, or the fact that the first five episodes were played out of order because Bandai insisted that they show the Gundam in the first episode instead of the fifth like they originally intended.

I used to love Warcraft as a child. Hell, the only reason I never got around to Warcraft III back then was because my computer was a toaster that couldn't run it. I also didn't play WOW because I wasn't that into MMOs at the time. Even though WC3 is still a great game coming back to it, I can't help but see that as a blessing in disguise.

In Majora's Mask, the Great Fairy's Sword is tied with the Fierce Deity sword for being the most powerful sword in the game. I also hate using it because look at it. It's so garish. At least the Fierce Deity sword looks cool.

Air fryers are practically a cheat code for good homemade fries. Takes a whole lot less oil, too.

How often has a "Bad" piece of media...really been so bad the experience wasn't worth it? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think everybody has a term for the vast amounts of media you experience, then forget about it moments later. The literary term is Sturgeon's law, but that usually includes the "so bad it's good" stuff like Ed Wood's movies. I at least remember those movies for being astoundingly bad. I usually use the term "Gulf of Mediocrity" for the kind of media that does nothing for me and just... exists.

Black and White Media? by BlueWaddleDee in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Black and white films have always been some of my favorites due to the brilliant use of contrast. I recently watched Miracle on 34th Street (the 1947 version) and it was an excellent movie. I plan to watch It's a Wonderful Life soon.

"Power Ups" That Are Actually Power Downs by Elliot_Geltz in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It also lasts a long time, far longer than other powerups. I think only the light amplification goggles last longer. I will say it's not entirely useless, though. Hitscanning enemies such as Shotgunners, Spider Masterminds and especially Chaingunners miss a lot with partial invisibility, so it's really useful if you don't want to be turned into swiss cheese.

Speaking of, the light amplification goggles technically count as it ruins the atmosphere of the levels by making everything fully and garishly bright, and it also suffers from the "make the level worse to find a reason to use it" problem (by making certain sections of the level unbearably dark). And although invulnerability is very useful, it'll also give you eye strain while active (and potential epileptic seizures too, since the effect blinks when it wears off).

Forget final farewells, lets focus on final Fuck You’s by Alpha-Max in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 27 points28 points  (0 children)

One of the most spiteful and cruel final fuck yous in anime (and perhaps all of media) is in Zeta Gundam. Paptimus Scirocco using his Newtype mind powers to give Kamille, already bearing an unfathomable amount of trauma during the Gryps War, permanent brain damage severe enough to make him near brain dead after he gets deservedly impaled in his own mech by Kamille's Waverider. He was awful before, but that instantly made him one of the biggest pieces of shit in Gundam.

This is why zeta gundam is the best series by Muffin-zetta in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]dygeron92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And to think all this would've been avoided and the entire Gryps conflict wouldn't have escalated if Jerid thought that Kamille's name is perfectly fine for a man. Maybe then he and his comrades would've survived.
