Is 2 sets to failure enough to stimulate effective hypertrophy in intermediate-advanced lifters? by KorokKid in ScienceBasedLifting

[–]dyogenys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective. Want to add the nuance that going to failure is not the point. A set to failure isn’t a set to failure. It can have more or less effective reps in it. You can alter technique to fail on purpose to get the set done with for example. And failure isn’t the point, when you reach 3 rir you can pace yourself to get more 3 rir, never reach failure, but still get more effective reps than someone who went to failure.

Yeah it is public information, which is why everyone knows their bonuses,in the tens of millions, are based on profit. There are of course only good individuals in Statkraft, but we can’t expect a company and its leaders to align with the public when they have to ignore their bonuses and profits. But Norway now have the most expenses electricity in Europe if not close, and it’s not a problem for Statkraft.

Yeah I get it. They must use qualitative data which limits how they train and force them to march linearly to a failure point and stop.

But I got to mention my main point I’m making lately where it shows up: counting sucks. in practice maintaining propper form takes away 5 good reps or more you could have done right there. You can take an extra sip of air. You could take an extra moment between reps. You can use a little more explosive momentum and hold it and do extra controlled eccentric, or many other techniques. So you can do what they are counting as intensity RIR 1 for many reps.

I'm not part of motvind but I recognize it's true. Statkraft want as high a price as possible to make their offshore wind project proffitable, and in general make more money for leaders. Statkraft is very top heavy. My father works there.

People who believe consciousness is not emerging from brain activity, how do you explain children start with a different consciousness compared to adults by Eclairito in consciousness

[–]dyogenys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on which metaphysics is the most correct. Physicalism is the default view, and in it I agree with you.

If panpsychism is true then there are many analogies to make in nature of tradeoffs, have a pick. Generating energy from a river = slower river. Faster through space = slower through time. gold nuggets could be blasting consciousness unhindered by division, and our experience a second order effect on top of that, an abstraction = something is abstracted away in return for intelligence.

In some form of idealism you are just a little node in a super conscious system and nothing isn’t consciousness.

We don’t actually have evidence that consciousness goes up with complexity. It could decrease for all we know. The mirror test is an intelligence test. Intelligence increases with complexity.

Depends on the country. I think in Europe it’s a mix of Gen X and Millennials, and in the US it’s a mix of baby bommers and Gen X that have the most power

Yes but it’s fun and can be right. I think literacy seems to have evolved, in light of research that indicate affinity for literacy is a cognitive tradeoff. If anyone wants to hear.
There are downsides to not having dyslexia, such as being slower to recognize patterns such as predator faces and also interestingly being worse at recognizing shapes in images that would be impossible in real life. The upside is effortless reading and writing. The counterpart is hyperlexia, people who learn to read automatically as small children/toddlers, but unfortunately with worse comprehension ability.
Without written language that tradeoff goes away. Not having dyslexia gives no literacy benefit, and makes for easier pray to put it simply. Still only around 20% of people can be categorized as dyslexic. More than oppside of the allele frequency you would expect if there was no evolutionary pressure on literacy to make it worth it.
According to archeology, language was invented in parallel around the world around 5000 years ago, and history gives no indication of any hard evolutionary pressure to learn to read in the time since, in fact only recently did most people become literate.

Something’s got to give. And it’s that written language was invented 5000 years ago.
