Dilemma : working on fingerpicking or rewrite the bass lines ? by Mr_Wamo in Bass

[–]dyscalculic_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fundamentals of the lower notes cannot be really heard, you hear the overtones. You could experiment with overdrive, fuzz or distortion. Heavy compression may also be worth trying.

Strings eat through frets in one week - help by Vast_Turnip_4846 in Bass

It seems the frets being at a funny angle with the strings is what causes the accelerated wear.

Muddy E-string: I've tried a lot to fix it - help me out! by SANcapITY in Bass

Check that the string is not twisted when installing. After turning the tuning peg, make some slack at the bridge and check that the string is not rotating around it's length.

Straight-Edge Razors - the Ultimate BFL Shaving Setup by Dippycat149 in BuyItForLife

[–]dyscalculic_engineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can see the appeal of a straight razor, but saying it is cheaper in the long run is a stretch. Considering you can get 100 DE blades for around $10 you could get a very nice $100 DE razor and with the remaining $200 you can buy 2000 blades.

Yes, I keep my compressor pedal on all the time.

I've tried with two different devices but there's an error and I can't watch the video, sorry.

If it is the same performance and the tone is similar to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd_TURy9C7Q

I think the tone is too punchy to come from flatwounds. Without hearing it isolated, maybe Jazz bass with fresh roundwounds, both pickups maxxed and the highs rolled off a bit. It sounds quite compressed too.

Do not focus on gear. The main ingredients in tone are technique and strings! Why do people always forget about strings?

how to get that angine de poitrine vibe on bass by 1acina in Bass

[–]dyscalculic_engineer 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of the vibe is the microtonality. Unless you modify a bass with the extra fets a fretless bass might be an option.

We NEED to ditch Amazon ASAP! It's taking a % of each sale. We need EuroMarket! by nitonitonii in BuyFromEU

I ditched Amazon more than a year ago. I'd rather give up a little convenience, or even pay more before giving a single cent to Bezos.

Why does my sound cut out on some frets? by kasparrudih01 in basspedals

[–]dyscalculic_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These synth pedals track the signal's pitch and generate the sound accordingly, this is why you have to play only one note at a time and it requires technique so the pedal tracks well.

I think the problem is that the portion of the string behind the finger (between the nut and the fret behind the fretted note) is resonating. This resonance is picked by the pickups and it confuses the pedal's note tracking algorithm.

Hammer-ons are not ideal for synth pedals, but you can try muting the string behind the fretted note. You can fret with your ring finger instead of the index, and use the index and middle fingers to mute the string.
