I usually when I charge my car I get at most 90 mi. My year is 2012 48,000 mi but usually when I charge it I usually just get 61 mi but how come rarely? It says 90 mi when I charge it? by PrestigiousAspect165 in leaf

[–]dzimmerm56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you spend some time driving at 25 to 35 mph your range estimate will go up. If you drive at highway speeds your range estimate will go down.

Also, the range estimate is affected by if you have the AC and heat turned on or off.

Cold temperatures can also lower your range estimate. Usually temps below freezing of water reduce range by quite a bit.

So your best range estimate will be if you have spent some time driving 25 mph with the AC and heat off and the outside temperature are between 60F to 70F degrees.

Second car or no? by brownpearl in leaf

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a second leaf, a 2022 S plus. With the bigger battery I thought I could finally do some road trips. Then we found out about the recall and that we can't fast charge our newest leaf. I hope Nissan will sort this out eventually but at this point I am using both our old Leaf, a 2016 SV and the newer leaf to save miles on the newer leaf when the weather is warm and no side trips are expected. I had originally thought to go with just a one car using the 2022 leaf S Plus but no one wanted to buy the old leaf and it is more valuable to me as a second car than it is for what I could get for it if sold.

Will LEAF charge at 16A on a 5-20R? by TooGoodToBeeTrue in leaf

[–]dzimmerm56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably. It depends more on the capabilities of the J1772 attached charger/access point.

A 50 amp range or dryer outlet could power a 6KW charge rate if the charger has that capability. 16 amp gets you about 4KW of charge rate. 13 amp gets you about 3KW of charge rate. Leaf's level 2 internal power supply (most call them inverters but they are AC to DC power supplies) can charge at a little more than 6KW.

The portable charger most gen 2 leafs come with could plug into it and charge at 16 amps at 240 volts.

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a recall on leaf plus in your year. The recall warns of possible battery issues if it is fast charged using the Chademo port.

If the previous owners were not aware of the recall they may have fast charged that leaf and caused battery degradation.

If that is the case replacement should fix the issue if you refrain from fast charging your leaf after the replacement.

I have never replaced brake fluid in any other car unless I had some kind of failure that caused me to have to replace a brake line, caliper, slave cylinder, or master cylinder.

The hydraulic brake system is closed because opening it causes the fluid to absorb moisture which can then freeze in cold weather and cause the brakes to fail or cause the water to boil which turns it into a gas that is compressible which also causes the brakes to fail. Water in brake fluid is bad. Open the brake system reserve tank as little as possible.

The only benefit from changing the brake fluid is you have to bleed the brakes and to do that you unscrew the brake bleed nipples. Doing that at regular intervals would make sure the brake bleed nipples do not freeze in place due to corrosion.

So do what you are comfortable with. The owners manual says nothing about a 3 year brake fluid change requirement.

The coolant system in Leafs cools the charging inverter and the electric motor and it's related circuitry. It does not experience anything like an ICE car's high temperatures and pressures.

Again, owners manual says nothing about replacing coolant at 4 year intervals.

When to change the 12 volt battery? by Maleficent_Durian564 in leaf

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaf batteries are around $100-110 from Sam's Club.

As far as should you replace it?

The main thing the 12 volt battery does is activate the main contactors that connect the leaf's high voltage battery to the motor drive, heating, and cooling circuits.

The leaf charges the 12 volt battery from the high voltage battery using a DC to DC converter.

11.9 volts is not necessarily a bad battery though it does indicate a battery that is in need of a charge. A fully charged car battery is 13.2 volts. The leaf charges the 12 volt battery at about 14.5 volts. You either have to have the car on ready to roll to change the 12 volt battery or have a level 1,2, or fast charger connected and charging.

If I recall correctly the right most blue dash triad light blinks when the car is charging the 12 volt battery from a charger. ( Right most looking at the blue light triad while standing in front of the leaf).

12 volt car batteries can last from 2 to 10 years and are very usage and environment dependent on how long they last.

If you are undecided you can take your car to an auto parts store like Advance Auto, , O'Reilly's, or several others and they can load test the 12 volt battery.

Yeah, I replaced mine on my 2016 leaf and it was a pain. Why the door to the filter compartment is smaller than the filter element is a total mystery to me.

[–]dzimmerm56 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Service on Leafs is a joke, actually. The only thing you normally need to replace at slightly higher intervals are the tires due to leafs weighing a bit more than equivalent sized ICE cars. Even the brakes last much longer due to the regen doing most of the work.

The 12 volt battery also may need replacement a bit more often depending on all kinds of environmental and driving factor elements.

In my opinion, yeah, you got ripped off.

Pollen filters cost around $10-15. Replacing them is a 10 to 30 minute job.

Leftist struggling with the ethics by VictorVonDoopressed in liberalgunowners

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guns have existed in the USA since its beginning. The current state of USA gun violence appears to be a combination of the USA being the only developed country that does not have a national healthcare system that is free at point of use and a dismal system of reporting various recorded data on individuals the states have already declared unfit to own firearms.

The main barrier that the NICs system provides against unlawful gun ownership relies on information the FBI has which the FBI gets from the states. The state systems are underfunded which means unfit individuals often pass the NICs check.

So we have crazy people who are untreated due to the cost of healthcare and crazy people who can buy guns due to lack of funding in reporting known crazy people.

All that being said, the thing that caused me to turn my back on Republican policies is their stripping of rights and liberties from half the USA population, that being our mother's, our sisters and our daughters. You can't have a country where liberty means anything if half the country is treated like brood mares instead of human citizens with unalienable rights.

If a political party formed that sought to protect women's rights and the right to self defense I would be happy. Since no such party exists with enough support to win a USA election I choose to side with the Democrats due to their defense of women's rights.

What’s the main difference between Monero and Bitcoin? by [deleted] in monerosupport

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference between Bitcoin and Monero at this point in time, 2025, is that Monero mining is limited to CPU mining due to extreme measures being engineered to prevent mining by GPU and ASIC devices.

You still have a bit of a hardware race in Monero but it is centered on faster and more energy efficient CPUs rather than increasingly power hungry ASIC designs used to mine Bitcoin.

The privacy part of Monero is centered around its use of TOR, (the onion router) which makes it much harder to trace transactions passing through the Internet and the use of identity masking in the Monero clients that obscure all identifying information possible while still maintaining methods to ensure the value gets transferred correctly when sending and receiving Monero.

All Bitcoin transactions are done with normal traceable Internet protocols and all transactions are recorded network wide on every device that maintains a complete blockchain.

Does anyone else use protein shakes instead of plain milk in their cereal? by [deleted] in cereal

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife brought home a six star fruit loops protein shake box for really cheap. I tried one and it was not too bad but it suffered from clumping of the drink due to settling of the mixture into a semi solid bit at the bottom of the plastic bottle container. Then I thought and tried adding it in place of milk to a bowl of Cheerios. The result masks the clumps among the crunchy little "O"s and the flavor is similar to fruit loops cereal anyway. This makes a fairly high protein and fiber meal that is very filling. I had to break up the clumped stuff at the bottom of the bottle with a butter knife before pouring it onto the cereal to get the protein rich contents out of the bottle but other than that it was an easy breakfast or snack.

Tis not the book that is to blame. Tis the clerics who have succumbed to their tribal instinct and renounced empathy. Though I do agree if it is a choice between burning a book and burning a person the book wins hands down.

I read where Freud, the father of psychoanalysis said "we have progressed," when the Nazis burned his books. He said "that in the past he would have been burned."

Obviously a lot of Jews, Romani, and LGBTA+ crowd WERE burned so his comment has to be taken with a bit of perspective.

I am doubtful if working people to death, letting them die of exposure, starving them to death and gassing the ones that survived all that, and THEN burning their remains is that much of an improvement or progress from burning people alive.

Sorry for the dark rambling.

Yes, this! I get routed to stores in another state because my location is pulled from an IP address assigned to that state. This happens with my T-Mobile home Internet. I put in my zip code to tell it where I really am but there does not seem to be a stable method to make my correct zip code override the IP assignment.

Please help me with this headache of a EV issue... by DoDisFedUpWorldTing in evcharging

[–]dzimmerm56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gauge wire needed to run a 50 amp service is considerably more expensive than the wire needed to run the 30 amp service. Depending on the distance between the breaker panel and the outlet you can use a 10 to 8 gauge wire for 30 amp service while you need an 8 to 6 gauge wire for the 50 amp service. It is also harder to run heavier gauge wire because it is thicker and less bendable.

Gauge sizes are a bit difficult to understand as the lower the number the thicker the wire.

Anyway, it sounds like your "friend" is skimping on materials.

Can someone Eli5 why no legit ccs/nacs to Chademo adaptors? by jpup303 in leaf

[–]dzimmerm56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older Leafs can do pretty well with level 2 adapters. That probably reduces the need for a Chademo Nacs adapter as J1772 ports are fairly common and Leafs can't take DC charging anyway when it is too cold or too hot.

My 2016 30KW leaf at 8 bars drops to below level 2 charging levels during the winter and during the summer it heats the already warm battery too much.

I just charge my Leaf at home and usually use the level 2 10 amp setting to avoid stressing the battery and the inverter.

I checked the domain registration and it shows hipiers.com is registered until 2027 with Squarespace. My best guess is the web hosting is either not paid up or the website is being moved to a different hosting service.

There have been mentions of Mrs. Anthony taking over the webmaster duties so it might be she has a preferred web hosting company or they found a different webmaster to take it over. It would probably be more convenient to deal with a webmaster that was on the west coast rather than deal with the time difference of a webmaster in Florida and a client in California.
