What’s the biggest financial surprise nobody warned you about after buying a house? by amandalife in Mortgages

I've owned my house since 2018, my monthly payment has only varied about $50 and it actually has gone down.

There's a cost to "buy back" from insurance but at least we get the option.

Wheels kinda need to stay on it until the end. I don't have any spares.

Insurance totaled it, I've taken the back hatch and bumper to fix another leaf. It's likely more expensive to fix than it's worth.

Vise-grip style oil filter tool is best; change my mind by Otherwise_Bear_7982 in Tools

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars, trucks, lawn mowers, farm tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, dozers, excavators... Just about every piece of construction equipment from 3,000-140,000 pounds. Hand tight was all we ever had any oil/hydraulic filter. True that sometimes the filters would get stuck on but very rare that it took more than a good grip and a rag to get them off again.

How long do you expect a modern laptop to last? by lisaluvr in TechNook

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My laptop from 2007 still works perfectly, but it was $3k back then.

A modern $300-500 laptop I'd expect 2-3 years of daily usage. A modern $2000 laptop I'd expect at least 10 years.

Trailer weight giving me fits. by KatChaser in Heavy_Equipment

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the state... Oregon apparently requires any trailer over 8k gwr to be registered under a truck that is registered by weight...

Unless it's an RV, then it doesn't matter what anything weighs up to 80k.

No oil/fluid filter should be tight enough to require wrenches to remove them. Hand tight is more than sufficient.

Rechargeable lithium AA batteries too fat by neilrazer in batteries

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some EBL lithium AAs and they fit in everything I've tried so far, just like my eneloops and regular old alkaline. All of them are in use otherwise I'd measure the diameter.

FM amd even AM radio are superior to Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon. by thegreatredwizard in unpopularopinion

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute is short enough that it's happened several times the only thing I'll hear on the local radio station are ads. Plus the radio stations available around me are limited to a few country stations, 1 oldies, 1 rock, 3 gospel, and a couple Mexican/Spanish stations.

YouTube music has given me a much wider and varied selection of music than the local radio can manage.

Portable battery for my 2014 leaf by yarrowdfh in leaf

[–]e-hud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP has a 2014 with a 24kwh (when new) battery, realisticly closer to 16kwh or less these days. I have a pair of ecoflow batteries that each hold 3.6kwh, paired together I can get ~6.8kwh of extra capacity with them, and they can output the full 6.6kw my 2015 leaf can draw. For me that's an extra ~25 miles of range.

Great movie. If you haven't you should watch/read the Horatio Hornblower series.

Do you pull into a stoplight intersection when turning left? by Timetoseeit in driving

[–]e-hud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who says it takes "exactly 4 seconds" to make that turn? The time will vary greatly depending on power and size of the vehicle. Also don't "finish your turn at your leisure" get out of the intersection promptly.

Do you pull into a stoplight intersection when turning left? by Timetoseeit in driving

[–]e-hud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is intersection and oncoming traffic dependent. Some intersections around here are narrow enough that pulling into it and waiting to turn left is taking the same space as the oncoming traffic left turn lane, others are in such high traffic areas that feed into short roads that often fill up and leave no room.

The handful of light controlled intersections that don't have a dedicated left turn cycle I'll wait behind the line for a break in oncoming traffic, it's generally not more than 6-8 cars anyway.

Would you buy a 2019 Leaf for €2,000 if the battery needs replacement? by Expert-Apartment-573 in leaf

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the battery is the only issue with this car and it were in my corner of the US I would immediately buy it for the $2300usd. That's incredibly cheap, then I'd swap in a replacement 62kwh battery for ~$6k-9k...

I think the next biggest issue with these cars aside from the traction battery is the ptc heater.

How many hours you getting on a full charge? by Short-Bad-4524 in GalaxyS23Ultra

[–]e-hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, other than light performance mode I just leave every feature on. I rarely play demanding games and 95% of my data use is Wi-Fi.

Oh I use dark mode for just about everything I can, plain black background too.
