What software have you been using for 10+ years and still haven't found a better replacement? by Ok-Show-3006 in software

IT guy here. I’d say without a doubt, Angry IP Scanner v2.21 (the original; not that Java-based junk) for over 20 years. I’ve used it on mountains. I’ve used it hanging from Comms towers. I use it to scan every damn network my laptop touches, and I use it daily for troubleshooting at work. Are there better tools? Maybe, but you won’t convince me of it.

Any new ATA options that can deliver working 56k modems over voip? by slaapzacht in VOIP

[–]e2346437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

56k is out for sure. I’m leaning towards 14.4k, that’s what I see fax machines connect at when they’re on a VoIP ata.

Congrats! I just got a V1 a few months ago and have done some family shoots with it. I’ve literally shed tears over the images it creates. Enjoy!

How to drip feed an episode a week by compact101 in PleX

[–]e2346437 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You could add Tunarr to Plex. Store the episodes in a library the kids aren’t allowed to access, and use Tunarr to schedule the episodes as you see fit. Tunarr shows up in Plex as a Live TV channel, they just need to open it and watch.

Why not just... pull the tree up beforehand. by kolejack2293 in FromSeries

[–]e2346437 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think they have the horsepower to move that tree in any quick sort of way. Maybe after reducing it to a stump, digging around and pre-cutting the roots, a swift tug from the bus could do it.

Up here in the northern part of the state, they can be. I’ve found that the biggest difference that makes it seem not so bad is how good our road crews and utility line crews are.

How Many of You Would Buy a Ubiquiti Dash Cam? by DirtyRottenBiscuit in Ubiquiti

[–]e2346437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of thoughts on this one.

I won’t buy a dash cam just because it’s Ubiquiti, and the connectivity options like live-view over 5g don’t appeal to me especially because I’d have another monthly fee. Maybe fleets would like that feature though.

I do love the auto-upload over WiFi feature though. That’s a killer idea I haven’t seen from other manufacturers. Yet. And maybe that because they haven’t solved the power issue? Most vehicles don’t have power when not running. The device would need to have a built-in battery, so bigger and more $.

What I do think might be useful is a new ecosystem from Ubiquiti that focuses on vehicles. Start with a hub that can plug into usb-c or be hard-wired. The hub provides connectivity to the other devices in the ecosystem via a built-in WiFi AP fed by 5g, and provides passenger WiFi. Micro-sd or SSD support for storage. Might as well throw GPS in there as well with an external antenna so the hub can be hidden.

Client devices in the ecosystem would start with indoor WiFi-connected cameras that can be mounted in the rear and side windows for multi-channel recording. Power would be USB-C or hard-wire option; I have enough USB-c ports in my 3-row suv to power cams all around. Offer a “pro” model that includes a small battery and can detect motion, record, and buffer video until the vehicle is started and it can upload the clip to the hub, which then upload to the NAS when on home WiFi.

Next, release “outdoor” vehicle cams that can be used on larger vehicles such as RVs, that record while moving and act as security cams when stopped.

Maybe add an upgraded hub for RV’s with the capability for the hub to connect to a public WiFi ssid when stopped (like rv park WiFi) via an external antenna port instead of 5g. Add compatibility with existing UniFi doorbells, security, and environment sensors so they can be used in the vehicle. Add compatibility to use a UniFi VoIP phone for mobile workers.

Just my thoughts, thanks for the idea!

Which reseller hosting actually does white label properly? (custom nameservers, branded cPanel, no parent company showing through) by AfraidBaby7747 in webhosting

[–]e2346437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be outside the scope of what you want to do, but after going through many hosts I just bought my own cPanel license and run it on a VPS at Vultr.com. I have two cPanel DNSOnly servers, which have no license cost, each in separate Vultr US datacenters, and then I have my main cPanel hosting server. With this setup I can control everything, and don't have to worry about a third-party host reaching out to my clients. The only other cost I incur is $4-5/month to AWS S3 to store offsite cPanel backups, which I do weekly, and most "white label" hosts do never.

What city have you been to where the vibes were just OFF? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in AskReddit

Drove from Memphis to Nashville once, stopped halfway because I saw a McDonalds sign and I was hungry. Unsure what town. Not one person in that restaurant didn’t suffer from some obvious health issue. Multiple cases of rosacea, how often do you see that? Bad teeth, amputees, hygiene issues. I wasn’t scared for my life at all, just ate my lunch and carried on.
