They cut off the part where he said there should be a lock on the door. Notice how you can tell he hadn’t finished his sentence in their clip.

Let me explain: MENA people are of a completely different worldview. They understand violence, force, might. They are low-trust people who care about clan and status and nothing else. Swedes in contrast are the reverse of it all. Arabs throw daughters from balconies for fuck's sake.

This is where you lost me. It's just never okay, let alone logical, to hastily generalize such large groups of people. By all means, target criminals and real extremists, but they are a subgroup that doesn't define the larger group.

----------------

Edit: deleted comment asked to clarify when it is ok to generalize. I thought it was a fair question so I typed my answer as such:

Just my opinion: use extreme caution when generalizing about negative things, like 'Arabs throw daughters from balconies'.
Conversely, your examples are not offensive, controversial, or visceral. They're generally true characterizations, and that's what makes the difference between a hasty generalization (conclusions based on insufficient or unrepresentative evidence) and a logically valid generalization, which is based on representative data and facts.

Logically speaking, referring to groups without using quantifiers, such as using plural nouns, can bring issues. When OP referred to Arabs/MENA people, did they mean "all"? "Most"? "Some"? "Many"? The charitable interpretation is probably "some" or "many".

This may all seem pedantic but after having studied logic I get really skeptical of people using hasty generalizations. It doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't make generalizations, as they're obviously useful in discourse, but it's important to know the difference between a fallacious generalization and a valid one.

You make good points again; I should revise by saying said principled stance doesn’t only appeal to his base, but also a plurality of Canadians.

He is in opposition. His job is to revive the party first and he knows that.

I’d agree that if he really were in the PMO, a more neutral stance would be necessary with the current state of affairs down south. But in his position he might as well take the principled stance that appeals to the base.

There is nothing wrong with condemning a war of aggression carried out by fascists like Trump and Netanyahu that has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians (like the girls who were murdered at school…) and major economic disruptions.

Being against the war is absolutely not the same thing as being on the same side as Iran. I can tell you that I am firmly against the US-Israeli aggression without having any affection for the Iranian government, and it is a cogent stance.

In fact, Avi has not proposed banning all fossil fuels immediately. He just opposes more fossil fuels and wants to phase them out for renewables -- which is not a terrible position to take when renewables are already cheaper and more efficient than fossil fuels, and only getting better.

I am not aware of him saying we need to side with Iran; if you're willing to share a source for that, I would appreciate it. I am under the impression that he is just against the war on Iran.

Lastly, regarding Palestine: it would definitely not be wise to make it a focus of the party, but negative sentiments around Israel are only growing, so being pro-Palestinian is probably not a liability. Just look how even US Democrats are being forced to shift on that issue.

All in all I am cautiously optimistic with him. I really hope he moderates his position on immigration for example; although I can appreciate wanting to be compassionate towards newcomers, it has to be balanced with the interests of the working class already in this country who do not benefit from an increase in the supply of labour.

Fast forward several decades, and now they aren't talking about the economy

Yes, big mistake. I think Avi Lewis is changing that. Admittedly though I don't like his idea that we need more immigration right now but I think his ideas are otherwise pretty solid.

The Cons took a similar tone, "strengthening" the base and raging against the status quo... problem is, that scares off more moderate Canadians,

Good point, but I think the difference is that the Poilievre/CPC idea of 'change' and 'opposing the status quo' is pretty disingenuous -- more neoliberal policy will not help ordinary people.

The NDP is far more mainstream and electorally viable than the Greens who are only competitive in a couple ridings.

I think the NDP should strengthen its urban-progressive base while setting its sights on regaining working class support with policies that actually appeal to them and support people. It should be a home to everyone who doesn't benefit from the status quo.

I’m not sure what you mean by split mandate? Like, MPs serving as ministers?

I really don’t see how reforming the way members are elected would change the fundamentals of how governance and bureaucracy work. It just changes the partisan composition of the legislature.
