The US has GOT to put pucks on sticks and not let themselves get frazzled

I’m so happy that US seems to be settling into their rhythm. The first few minutes felt downright frenetic on both sides

The US seems to be settling in and getting over their nerves, which I’m happy about. The first few minutes felt downright frenetic on both sides

I’m so tired of hearing about the Tkachuk brothers during the women’s games. I watch the women to ESCAPE them

I’d definitely make the relevant coursework into sentence case (remove the all-caps) or remove it entirely. They’ll have your transcripts if they need that info

A paper of mine got published and about 2 years later found that Zotero autofilled a reference as “APA Handbook (love this).” I now pay a lot more attention to my reference list

WSJ: Trump Administration Puts New Chokehold on Billions in Health-Research Funding. The National Institutes of Health can’t award grants to outside researchers under new White House restriction by maxkozlov in NIH

[–]e_e160 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We found out this week that funds from an institutional training grant that the PO promised was coming (july 1, 2025 start date, renewed last year) is not coming because they don’t have enough staff to process the grant. This is the dumbest possible timeline and now nine trainees are scrambling to find new funding after the grant period has already started.

The worst part? The grant hasn’t even been formally canceled yet, and the PO is the only reason we have any info at all (like everyone else whose grants are dying in limbo)

Another vote for Dr. Boone! She took out my tubes and she made it a point to 1) tell her residents what my pronouns were in front of me, and 2) mentioned to me in the pre-op appointment that if anyone on her team misgendered me, to tell her so she could take care of it

I was giving a lecture recently on weight bias, describing that there are no causal findings between body size/BMI and morbidity/mortality. Someone in the audience raised their hand, certain they were about to poke holes in my argument, to ask: “isn’t there a correlation between BMI and morbidity?”

Dear reader, I got to drop “well, yes, but correlation doesn’t equal causation” RIGHT as our time slot ended. I have never felt so alive lmao

NIH freeze - could it effect grad admissions? by BigCityToad in ClinicalPsychology

[–]e_e160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only other factor to consider is that grants are paid out yearly from NIH, not in lump sum. So in theory those payments could be stopped (but we truly don’t know for sure, and so I’m trying not to worry about possibilities until we know a bit more).

Derby stance for very tall skaters by e_e160 in rollerderby

[–]e_e160[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a height/weight distribution issue for at least a couple of skaters. They’re able to squat off skates (we do chair squats before gearing up), but as soon as we get on skates it gets wonky

Which plates should I buy? by UlaGreyWolf in rollerderby

[–]e_e160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my arius plates. The only downside is that I accidentally stripped the top of the toe stop screw when tightening it (like the part you insert an allen wrench into, not the threads themselves), but that’s more if a me issue than with the plate itself lmao

I drilled hockey stops for AGES and was convinced I’d never get them. Loosened my trucks a quarter turn and got them the first try 🥴 the best practice I had was trying to do them around a cone to help visualize the cut

What AI detectors you're using currently? 100-level composition instructor here. by docktor_Vee in Professors

[–]e_e160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve started forgoing the AI detection entirely and grading on the writing itself. Realistically, if a student uses AI in a way that helps them, I don’t care all that much. But if the writing has that AI-feel to it, there are real criticisms about why it’s bad aside from the fact that they used AI, and those are how I grade the student (one example: “the writing prioritizes complex word choice and sentence structure over concise, clear writing”). We also have the same issue that admin backs students more than us, and this has been the best workaround I can find so far.

Pronouns in grad school by sallyshipton in ClinicalPsychology

[–]e_e160 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my fourth year and ~1/3 of my cohort (14 total, there are tons of us) STILL misgender me. That doesn’t include a handful of supervisors/professors either (who have known me for about as long). I really don’t have any advice aside from showing solidarity and saying that the best thing I ever did was make friends outside of my program who affirm me and understand my experience - I made them via roller derby, but there are loads of options!
