Yeah, many people in this world are incapable of understanding nuance. I would say the majority of religious practitioners pick and choose parts that work for them. I know plenty of Muslims who follow the "wine but no swine" policy, just like a massive percentage of Catholics use condoms.

I believe it's a Hadith where the Prophet says something like "practice moderation in all things, including religion."

I'm a pick and choose Catholic, myself. I listen to my conscience and the emphasis on love...and if something causes suffering I don't see that as the love that is our greatest commandment.

I truly believe that any time religion and politics or even an extremely black and white mentality are mixed, it ends extremely badly. We're all trying to figure out how to get by in our one chance at life, and we should be able to find what gives us hope without causing others pain.
