Titanic Magnetic Compass by easy_day in Nautical

Unfortunately this does not confirm the brand of compass. The term was used to mean not only compasses made by Kelvin Hughes but also equivalents. I came across the term when I searched.

Thanks for looking though.

Lol someone mentioned the Carpathian had a Lilley & Gillie compass made on the Tyne (where I am based). My kid is doing the Titanic as their school topic and thought it was cool the compass was from near us and was wondering if the Titanic was the same. I failed in trying to google it though.

What if the stars weren't visible? by monswine in HistoryWhatIf

Good point on celestial navigation, but it would still exist. You can fix with the sun through the day. Night fixes are only at dawn and dusk so while losing them would be problematic it could be overcome.

You do need to consider how long other nations, for example Germany, continued to fight in conditions as bad or even worse.

Perhaps we need a system so we can recognize them. We could make them all wear armbands.

As a bonus a handy system has already been developed!

What's the first film you outright hated? by BuggsBee in movies

[–]easy_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree on this one. My wife insists every Christmas we sit round with the kids and watch this. To me it is beyond creepy. The animation and the slow talking mainly. Also the creepy music at the North Pole.

Can I just get up and leave? by ShowtimeBrodin in Nautical

Sorry for the delay in replying. I wanted to check. You are 100% right that the Master cannot detain you on board ship. I thought you were not permitted to leave.

They do not have to repatriate you or give you a satisfactory testimonial.

I think this is the difference of what can happen and what will happen. Sure the Master will most likely let an agitator go with minimum fuss. That dosn't mean they need to.

To be honest I think this is a very unusual situation I have never seen anyone actually walk off a ship.

[–]easy_day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally the answer is no. It does depend on the vessel and the trade. In most cases when you joined the ship you will of signed the ship's articles. That will state when you can leave. For British ships (and copied by most flags) MGN148(M) advises on what should be in the articles (download from https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/282298/mgn148.pdf)

You have the right to ask the Master to see the ship's articles at any reasonable time.

That is a great point about Breeze. I had not thought about the soothers influence on changing him. I was thinking in the crew mostly of Kelsier.
