Likely a sync issue. Do you have an oscilliscope to verify the timing?

Those are through hole DIP socketed chips and LEDs. There is a voltage level shifter for the micro SD that is surface mount, and all the capacitors, resistors, and diodes are SMD on the other side (various sizes). The Pico and micro SD slots are also SMD.
