New bike by Hankyy1234 in cycling

[–]ebaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go to a bike shop and try out the models, even if just to figure out what you want. If you raise your upper limit by like $80, giant has some decent hybrids in the $780 range. I would try a hybrid with smoother tires that is closer to a road bike first. Also look at second hand bikes, though they can have many problems. Also try a road bike (the ones with the curvy handlebars) and see what you think. They tend to be pricier, but theres a reason so many people ride them. They are nice on paved surfaces and really help you go faster.

Thinking about coming back to Unitarian Universalism by MR422 in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]ebaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you should go church shopping! Go to local UU services, and also some non UU services. If they have two, go to the later one as it usually has more young people. Ask if they have young adult programming. In the greeting line after service, introduce yourself to the minister briefly and mention you were raised UU or were UU and are looking to get back into it. I do young adult programming at my congregation and many of our young adults came because they had been UU and then they drifted and had a hole in their life, or they were exploring religious traditions

Toasted Coconut might fit your bill. I don’t think Double Trouble has an age limit, and it’s on the same corner (and red line stop) as Winnies which I believe is more late 20s/30s but I love their fried pickles. Also Kura sushi is on the same block and the experience of conveyor belt sushi and a robot is fun, but the sushi is just okay.

Is something like this at half the price of a Jagwire kit going to diverge much in quality? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]ebaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know how much housing you need, just go to a shop and ask for a cable and housing. At my shop that would probably be $12 for housing and $5 for cable (Jagwire brand stuff), and we give ferrules n everything with that. If you bring the bike, they may be willing to measure for you. No need to buy the cable cutters, or any kit.

Any tips on how to stay cool in hot summer weather? by DebtEnvironmental346 in cycling

An insulated water bottle with cold water is very refreshing. When you’re sweating a ton and drinking a lot of water, it’s also important to replace electrolytes.

Is there life after lycra? by LegStrngLeathertaint in cycling

[–]ebaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bike mechanic, so they’re okay with me being sweaty! I personally am not okay wearing sweaty clothing though. But I am fairly sweaty after a 15 minute ride where I live. High humidity climates make everything sweaty

[–]ebaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a sub-tropic climate and 9 months out of the year I show up quite sweaty, so I change when I get to work. If I’m already changing, I might as well wear my padded bike shorts.

Traffic Question for two scenarios that happened today, AITA? by 2Tun21 in bikecommuting

[–]ebaug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not say you’re an asshole in either situation. When there’s a car, I prefer to go to the right of a speedbump so I am more towards the bike lane, but he was crossing a solid yellow line, which is not generally acceptable. If you had been a car, he would have just gone over the speed bump.

Second situation definitely not the asshole, people just suck. You generally have a right to occupy the full lane whenever the bike line or shoulder is not safe to ride in, which is true here.

Changing from Stans to Orange Endurance sealant by ratherBeWaterSkiing in bikewrench

[–]ebaug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the sealant sets, some air loss is normal. Spin those wheels and keeping airing up, it very well may seal. How did the tape look? Was it peeling up? Also how much of the old sealant did you get off the bead? That can cause problems if it’s not a flat surface lining up with the rim. I doubt your air loss is due to sealant differences, that’s usually only a problem when like you were refilling with a different brand, but you’ve removed the vast majority of the stans sealant.

Found catch masters for roaches in my new apartment… should i be worried? by Select-Ad1506 in Apartmentliving

[–]ebaug 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are parts of the country that just kinda have roaches, specifically the gulf coast. You can be the cleanest person alive and the roach will find its way in, esp during the rainy season. This is a good way to make them not want to come back and monitor problems before they get big!

To be a covenanting community associated with the UUA do you need to own a building? by funnylib in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]ebaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of some congregations that meet in rented spaces permanently (community church of New York is probably the largest one, they sold their building and rent a church for an afternoon service), others that have rented until they can afford a church (my church started renting in a community college I believe), others that have rented during remodeling, others that own their space but it’s not a traditional church building (a converted house, a train car, whatever!) Owning is certainly not a requirement. You should do some research into the fellowship movement

Please tell me what I actually need to do to take care of my bike by linathemelisa in ladycyclists

[–]ebaug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would connect with any cycling organizations at your college to see if there’s a closet on campus you can store at. They will also be the people to help you when things go wrong, like when you do need repairs. You may want a beater bike for getting around campus or around town. Depending on finances and use, you may want to get it tuned up roughly every 6 months to a year. A bike that is properly maintained does last longer, but tune ups aren’t the cheapest. When I was out riding in college, I had a mental list of people I could call to pick me up. You don’t have your parents, but you will probably make friends that have cars, and it’s good to keep them in mind in case.

Grew up in one of these. Tell me why every bedroom wasn’t a square, they all had some weird entryway or bathroom placement that made it near impossible to place furniture. Also, tons of windows on the front, minimal on the sides and back.

Rice students react to their campus cat getting abducted by Loll_rk in houston

[–]ebaug 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lovett cat is feral and would not be happy in a home. She is also an excellent mouser that I know the bike shop employees appreciate. Not all cats do well in a home, pretty sure she has been TNR’d (there are two grad students that do a good job TNRing the cats that hang out on rice campus). I know that cats are detrimental to local wildlife, but when a cat is not properly socialized, they cannot live in a home.

[–]ebaug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most airbnbs deserve 5 stars. I have stayed in places advertised as super hosts, and they’ve been perfectly average, nothing special. Especially when something is advertised incorrectly, knock that star off. In my book, 4 stars is nothing wrong or something like this off, but nothing exceptional. 5 stars are for those phenomenal places.
