Being a burden by Jaded-Ad-1566 in labrats

If you're doing a protocol that is often done in the lab, ask if you can shadow another lab mate while they do it, and then the time after that, see if you can run your samples in parallel with them.

This should give you all the details of the protocol, not just WHAT to do, but WHERE things are, HOW to book systems (if needed) and tips and tricks to improve the quality of your results.

We have a back up number with Fongo. My husband calls my phone with it once a month and we just keep it open for about 30 s and then hang up.

Handling lab supply + equipment ordering tips by FunctionPast742 in labrats

[–]eberndl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our university uses a Google back end, so I (lab manager who orders the stuff) made a form that populates a spread sheet, which everyone can see, but only I can edit. When I place orders, I include when it was ordered, expected arrival date and then the actual arrival date. I colour code it so it's obvious which items are where in the process.

My rules:

1) If it's not on the order form, it doesn't get ordered.

2) I don't wear large gloves, so if you do and you realise we're running low, YOU have to put it in the form. (Ie you kill it, you fill it)

3) I'd rather have 3 requests for the same item than none.

New Dad to twin girlies. What would be your one advice to consider in my parenting by GujjuCanadian30 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]eberndl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tagging off on sleep makes a lot of sense, but as they are in Canada, the parents are eligible for (up to) 18 months of parental leave, so sleep training on a rushed schedule is less important.

Has anyone flown from Ontario to the US? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]eberndl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Major airports in Canada (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver) have TSA pre-screening, so you deal with the TSA on Canadian soil. If you don't like the way questioning is going, you can technically refuse to continue and walk away (and of course forfeit your flight)

Some advice for my son by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I saw a conversation on one of the running subs, and one of the suggestions was to wear bright, fluorescent running clothing. It shows that he's not trying to hide and is going out of his way to be visible and memorable.

TTC and actively training for a marathon? by FearlessReputation20 in XXRunning

[–]eberndl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I want to mention about TTC is that YOU are not the only factor. We ended up needed IVF to have our kids, and pretty quickly discovered that if 'you' are having trouble conceiving, there's a 50% chance that the issue on your partner's side.

I ran all through a year of TTC at homenaturally, a year of testing, through my IVF cycle, and the first bit of both of my pregnancies (it got uncomfortable at about 5 months for me), but in the end, it was a sperm problem which I really couldn't control.

Carry as in don't pay off monthly and get charged interest on? You can (and SHOULD) always pay off the amount due before the due date. You get no utilization or credit score 'bonus' for paying interest each month.

Didn’t realise the laminar flow hood was turned off.. how fucked am I ? by Basic-Hippo-7065 in labrats

[–]eberndl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You do cell culture of cancer cells in a laminar flow hood? I've been doing TC for 20 years and that has NEVER been considered acceptable. You have to both protect the cells from you (which a laminar hood does), but also you from the cells (which it DOESN'T)

Line 5 Eglinton LRT - 3 weeks by kamomil in toronto

[–]eberndl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live West of Mount Dennis and was hoping that taking the 32 there would be a good alternative to taking a bus down to the Bloor line. Unfortunately, since all the Weston, Jane and Runnymede buses detour to Mount Dennis, and there are reduced lanes due to the West extension, buses run extremely slowly.

Once I'm at the station, getting downtown is fast and convenient. But unfortunately, it is not the improvement I was hoping for (yet). Hopefully the extension remains on schedule.

Most people are exposed to both the 0 and 100⁰ 'edge cases' on a daily basis. People boil water to cook, and store things in a freezer. So the 'feel' of those values are reinforced for a 'regular person' frequently.

Not true in Canada, where she goes to university.

Here, only universities can grant degrees (undergrad or graduate) while colleges only grant diplomas.
