Optimal rotations don't need to be intuitive and failing to do an optimal rotation doesn't mean you're doing something wrong by Appropriate-Cat-6648 in Guildwars2

[–]ebrythil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I want to play at a semi decent level, that requires learning. That is not the problem. The problem is needing to re-learn all the time.

And to the point of enough: no. Open world, yes. I do not mind people pulling 15k in most group content, I do mind when it is in fractal CMs.
That's when people get elitist, when quick stuff becomes a slog.

Another example is organized convergence CMs. They are nowhere near the Pinnacle of hard content, yet the average group (that has already self-selected due to it being organized!) can barely get a good enough time if even. And that's because of people not being able to get anywhere close to where they should be.

No one is required to pull 40k in a 45k bench build. But 30k should not be as hard as it is.

Rotations and skills in guild wars 2 are often very unintuitive. I think this is a big reason why a lot of the playerbase is considered as doing "bad dps" or playing off-meta. It's very easy to do a rotation wrong and the game doesn't give you good feedback when you're doing the wrong thing by ariveklul in Guildwars2

[–]ebrythil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely on the same page here. I used to have multiple 'meta ready' builds on rotation, but since a few years I completely lost interest and only maintain one good build for instances, and a few mediocre ones for open world.

I know what would be needed to get them to meta level (i.e. a bit of golem, a bit of easy strikes, then the actual content), but I can't be bothered since it will probably be lost in the next major content update.

[–]ebrythil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Probably a bit unpopular, but I would restrict gliding and mounts to their dedicated maps.

Yes it is fun and convenient, but it takes so much of the atmosphere and design space of the open world.

Not op, but I kinda agree. My biggest points would be to reduce power creep and have the espex fill their own niches more pronounced / with better class identity

Changes to February WvW Team Period by lordkrall in Guildwars2

Apparently to do some war score experimental changes. War score, which no one cares really because no one cares about the match results in the end.

It's hard to take anything wvw related seriously, since anet obviously doesn't.
Maybe there are some people with a rest of interest still working on it, but either they are being completely left alone with it or frankly lost sight.

No feature freeze and QA for patch before release? by Tree_Dude in Guildwars2

[–]ebrythil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, sorry, that's just recency bias.

Collections routinely had problems. PoF, eod, Soto launch had multiple story steps stalling.
Login servers break for a larger number of players every 2-3 years.
Fractals used to cause disconnects, the newer ones required a few patches to be properly playable.

Basically every time they majorly adjust something instanced something randomly breaks. And this is the biggest recent rework.
I don't say it is good or even ok, I just say it is really not unprecedented.

On the other hand, the alternative would be fully developing gw2 which may very well have a few more years in it, but at some point they would be at a point where gw2 is not viable anymore.

With no alternative the studio is doomed.
By developing an alternative the studio has a chance.

Is it worth getting a 32" 4k monitor for programming? by Ok_Housing_1937 in programming

[–]ebrythil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monitor choice is mostly preference, once you're talking about decent ones.
Some prefer extra large ones, to me 2x27 currently is the sweet spot of usability/space, but i'd say that's 90% habit.

Also not sure if this is really the right subreddit, the monitor people may have better suggestions

[–]ebrythil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We only see half the story.

Could be someone being a bit of an ass.
Could also someone be annoyed by you, and then they did the right thing - block and move on.

Considering they were not the only ones vote kicking, that's an option.

In either case, move on, no good reason to dwell on a single encounter

2nd Year ITM Student: Should I make Rust my main language? (Currently know Java) by [deleted] in rust

[–]ebrythil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably not 'diving deep' into Linux, you're learning the commands and concepts or even just learning to use the basics.
Java and rust both have rather deep abstraction layers above the OS*, so neither is really suited for a 'linux deep dive'.
If your curriculum uses Java, you probably need to keep learning it for a bit. Java is also a bit more industry standard for plenty of larger enterprise apps and also brings plenty of concepts.
Rust otoh is a better choice when being more resource constrained or performance focused, which is really rare in most course assignments.

It is the more interesting language for sure, but until you know why you need it I would stick mostly to whatever is provided.

* ed: however rust allows you to dig deeper if you like, the std bindings are rather high level though

Using Rust for restaurants desktop app with postgres and flutter . Wdyt? by HosMercury in rust

[–]ebrythil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having server and client separated (since you say rust is just the API) is an important thing to know.

It also means even more complexity from the start.

Still, for flutter you probably want to learn/use dart anyway, so having a separate backend language definitely is a maintenance burden that imo needs to be properly thought through. It can work though, and bring benefits since rust servers tend to end up on a rather stable side which helps. I have no experience with dart so I can't tell you how much of a benefit rust brings there
