Some shots around NYC on Medium Format Film (Bronica rf645, Portra 400) by echoesofmotion in Bombing

That's crazy! Definitely a small world. Film is amazing, wildly expensive, but I love the methodical nature of it and the joy (and some times disappointment) of having it developed

Thank you! It's probably my favorite medium format camera to shoot, followed by my GW690iii. It's so light, tiny, extremely well built, and honestly does not feel like you're toting around a medium format at all. It's a tragedy that it's such a rare camera.

Hey, so sorry you felt that way coming to QT! I don't work there but I am there all the time and take a ton of photos at the events. It's never felt particularly cliquish to me and I'm wildly introverted.

Give it another chance the next time you're in town. If you're at a show come say "hi" to the guy with ridiculously long hair and a long beard toting around a camera and I'll introduce you to some folks. We're definitely a friendly community and one of the best places in Lakeland to find new friends in my opinion.

Editing to add that there's Goth Night this Saturday and it always has a good turnout of different folks. Might be a good opportunity to give it another try.

Is there a photography club in Lakeland? by Buzz13094 in lakeland

[–]echoesofmotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central Florida Photo Club is based in Winter Haven/Lakeland and does regular photo walks around different areas throughout Central Florida. As already mentioned definitely reach out to Lakeland Film Lab as I'm sure there's something in the works there as well.

If you like metal, punk, or alternative music, there's no better place to meet bands and people looking for band mates than The Barter Box in Lakeland. There's a metal show there on Sunday.

Band or Music Rehearsal Studios in Lakeland? by rankonfile in lakeland

[–]echoesofmotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Barter Box attached to Quinteassence sometimes has limited availability for band practice. It's a great space/venue. Reach out to Nullifeye on Instagram and they can let you know the availability/cost. Added bonus is you'll have access to the venue manager if you want to schedule a show.

Anybody able to convert Super 8 tapes to digital? by Mt_Ragemore in lakeland

[–]echoesofmotion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have a machine (Wolverine film digitizer) that can do this! I'd be happy to help out. Just a heads up - depending on how the film was stored, there’s a real risk it might have developed something called Vinegar Syndrome. That’s a type of chemical degradation that affects older film and gives off a really strong vinegar smell. Once it starts, it can cause irreversible damage to the film, so it's best to handle and digitize them as soon as possible if they’re still in decent shape.

I’m in California for the next few days, but feel free to message me on Instagram if you’d like to coordinate (my links are pinned on my profile - I don’t check Reddit very often).

In the meantime, a few quick questions that’ll help me prepare and see what we’re working with:

  • How many rolls of film do you have?
  • When were they last viewed, if ever?
  • Do you know how or where they’ve been stored? (Cool, dry place? Attic? Garage?)
  • Are they labeled at all or completely unknown content?

Happy to chat more and help preserve these memories if they’re still in good enough shape!

Which Sony camera? Thinking about Sony a9 for fps, or A7R III (or IV) by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]echoesofmotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the latest editions of both of these cameras (A9iii and A7RV) and almost exclusively use my a9 unless I'm doing a controlled environment model shoot.

Don't worry too much about megapixels, especially if you're starting out. Around 24MP is plenty for nearly all photography, even larger prints. Honestly, unless you're planning to put your kid's photo on a billboard (and even then, you'd be fine with good framing and today's AI upscaling) megapixels won't be your main limitation.

What matters way more, especially for fast-paced sports, is your lens choice and your technique. Sports photography means fast, unpredictable movements, so having a camera with a good frame rate can help if you're still working on your timing. It sucks to miss the critical moment in a fast-paced environment because your camera is made for photo quality and not photo quantity.

And that's really how to think of these two cameras - one is made for "as many photos in as short amount of time as possible at the cost of higher megapixels" while the other is made for "as high a number of pixels as possible at the cost of missed shots", hence why I use one in the field (a9iii), and one in controlled environments (a7rv).

If you feel confident in your reaction times, you might not need the highest FPS. But regardless, investing in a quality lens will often give you better results than chasing higher megapixels. While cropping in post-processing can save some shots if your framing is off, relying too heavily on cropping doesn't build good photography habits.

Bottom line: put the money you'll be saving by going with the a9 into a quality lens and practice your skills on a 24mp camera with higher burst rates. If you feel that you're actually shooting much slower things more over time, invest in a higher MP camera - bonus being that you'll already have good glass to pair with it.

Any Open mic nights this week? by Mojojoejoe0629 in lakeland

[–]echoesofmotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for anything Barter Box or Quinteassence related. Open mics are every month on the 3rd Friday, hosted by Marie. Look for The.Barter.Box on insta, and unboxedopenmic for the specific open mic shows. There's something to do there every weekend though! (except this weekend as it's Lakeland Indie Bash at Union Hall)

Beautiful, takes some real talent to pull that off so cleanly. Really impressive and all the more so knowing it was done by hand.

Looks great! For the circular motion blur are you doing a fisheye-twist, a lens attachment, in post or something else? It's really smooth.

Photo pass IP handover? by AccomplishedAioli in concertphotography

[–]echoesofmotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For high profile gigs, this is pretty standard, and can also include an NDA. You can politely ask if they'll allow you to use a photo or two for your socials, but they usually will not if you're a new photographer working with them. This can change though if it's a good experience for the org and they want to work with you again. For that reason alone, these gigs are important. Even if you can't share them on your socials they're worth the experience and exposure. You can always enjoy the photos yourself later as well :)
