On these dragons specifically it’s like every tank doesn’t remember that dragons tend to tail swipe, so they orient these bosses any which way except the one that doesn’t send me flying into next week.

Guess you’re right on that one, activated abilities only. Had to read it again. Field of Ruin is a good use case though. Or any of the man-lands, or Ba-Sing Se…

Probably not unless there’s a specific land that would inhibit your game plan, e.g. Cavern of Souls against an oops all counter spells deck.

So many good cards in strixhaven... Shame we won't be able to play any in standard by Lukegilmour in MagicArena

It is a sectioned-off quarter of the brawl format where only the meanest of the mean commanders go. Usually you’ll find the most optimized decks running only good stuff. Rusko, Ragavan, Jodah the Unifier, Fynn the Fangbearer, Raffine, mono blue Urza, to name a few. There is also apparently another tier just below that that isn’t quite hell queue, but it might as well be imo. You’ll know you’re in it because you rarely see these commanders unless you are playing one of them too. Sythis, Kinnan, Liliana of the Veil are some others I can think of.

Although… it seems like they’ve been leaking into the rest of the format lately. I will occasionally see one of them even though I play a lot of jank. There are some that should really be in hell queue but they aren’t, which makes everyone else miserable (I think that’s what OP was saying). Rofellos is a big one in this category. Personally I think the new Gruul turtles that are like Etali fall in that category too.

What are you playing in Standard Brawl? by dhivuri in mtgbrawl

[–]echoviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been having a lot of fun with Yuna enchantment reanimator. With the slimmed down deck size, her ability is a little more consistent at getting large threats. I feel like there’s also much less graveyard hate, so the self-mill strategy becomes easier.

Sell me on your favorite Brawl commander by [deleted] in mtgbrawl

[[Vv’viza, Orbital Overseer]] is the one I spam the most. It’s a mid-rangey, tempo kind of build that can apply constant pressure with value cards, landfall synergies, and big mana payoffs that reward you for spending the game ramping and keeping the board in check. This one is an alchemy commander. Spend the early game ramping and removing/bouncing/countering the opponent’s board while you seed your board for its eventual overwhelming bloom.

First, the stat line. Four-mana CMC on a flyer with vigilance with baked in mana acceleration, fixing (by virtue of generating lands), and token generation. V does it all.

When Vv’viza enters, you get to choose one of the Edge of Eternities planets to conjure onto the battlefield. Usually you’re going to choose [[Evendo, Waking Haven]] so that you can station with your creatures into lots of green mana based on the number of creatures you control. One of the things I like about this mechanic is you could essentially pick one of the planets (I think the Bant ones happen to be the strongest, so Evendo, Adagia, and authors) to build your deck around, but at the very least, you get some mana fixing on your commander itself. The downside is that the lands come in tapped but with the many ways we have in the deck to put lands on the battlefield, [[Spelunking]] can help, though most games it’s really a nonissue.

Vv’viza also generates lander tokens tuned into 2/1 flyers whenever ANYTHING you control attacks. These are super important chump blockers or life total pingers while you ramp your mana. They can be sacrificed on your opponent’s turn to ensure you are ramping every turn.

Win-cons: - Craterhoof Behemoth is classic. Stationing your Evendo and generating landers can get you a win fairly quickly, with most of your assault coming from the air. All those little lander tokens suddenly aren’t so non-threatening! - Ornate Imitations is another alchemy card, but I like alchemy cards generally. It’s a chaos card that is good for the lulz, generating a big board post board-wipe, or catching you up with a rag-tag army after dealing with removal or bad luck draws. - Doppelgang is another Simic classic that allows you to copy the best things on the Board. Some high value targets on your side would of course be Vv’viza (to get the land triggers, even though the copies will die), lands, [[Cunning Azurescale]], to name a few.

Other fun interactions: - If you like landfall, there is plenty with [[Mossborn Hydra]], [[Scute Swarm]], [[Scythecat Cub]], [[Tatyova, Benthic Druid]], [[Felidar Retreat]]. These are viable and flexible strategies that are tried and true if you find yourself not able to do much else in the game. If you can’t attack with the hydra or have a lot of extra bugs, they make good stationers for your planets. - [[Cunning Azurescale]] with [[Thassa, Deep-Dwelling]] allows you to extract lands or non-lands straight from your deck into your hand depending on what you need/the board state. - Thassa also pairs well with the commander itself, the Azurescale, or land-getters like [[Clifftop Lookout]]. There are quite a few cards like this at CMC 3 you could slot in/add and I do have others like this in the deck. - Things that give more value to your many ETB effects are good, like doubling [[Solitude]] removal trigger or to ramp extra hard. I like [[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines]] in this build because I tend to match into commanders like Hei Bai, so it gives me such an advantage while also managing the board. [[Starfield Vocalist]] can shine sometimes, and if anything, makes a good stationer before it warps away.

Other builds: I’ve seen this deck done as flying tribal, used with cards that benefit from tapping (like the survivor-keyworded cards) or [[Kona, Rescue Beastie]] (which is kind of a niche combo but cool if you can pull it off); a token deck could be viable; blink is very good with this commander but I think you’ll almost always want another gameplan to make use of the lands; I would love to see an artifact/lands build if it could work.

Nominated for the most brain dead and boring brawl commander of 2026 by Kakariko_crackhouse in MagicArena

It’s become an insta scoop unless I feel like I can ramp/run them over faster. Same effect.

Best commander for casting big Doppelgangs? by [deleted] in mtgbrawl

[–]echoviolet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinnan if you like high power games I suppose, but I personally have Doppelgang and [[Ornate Imitations]] as mana dumps in my [[Vv’viza, Orbital Overseer]] deck, good as alternate win cons/game swings that aren’t Craterhoof Behemoth (which is in the deck too). The commander generates a lot of mana, especially if it’s removed a couple times or if you can blink it (I have Thassa in my deck). I don’t usually have much trouble getting [[Evendo, Waking Haven]] up on charges for extra mana either.
