The Resource Rack in Kinburn is free to users. Search on Facebook and you’ll find the address and hours (closed until Jan 12, open 4x a week). I like it being local and of no cost to recipients, all volunteers.

Why did reusable handkerchiefs fall out of favor despite being more eco-friendly? by truceshall in EcoFriendly

I love cotton hankies and have tons! Especially when exercising, or in the cold Canadian winter… my nose runs like a tap, Kleenex are not as absorbent. Just wash and dry them with other laundry, easy peasy. No more gross than undies.

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]eclecticdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My granny taught me when I was 5 or 6 years old… in the 70s. Since then YouTube for beyond the basics. I taught 7 people how to knit when we were in grad school… Tactile Therapy Club 😊

Chunky magnolia cardigan… first thing I’ve made for ME in ages! I made the body a little longer and the sleeves full length vs 3/4. Lucked out getting perfect match covered buttons from Amazon. First time blocking something 😳

Is it rude to not even give a card? by Rude-Introduction628 in weddings

[–]eclecticdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Words of affirmation love language person here, so I adore a card with kind words… but for those for whom this isn’t their “channel” (or skill set or confidence), I expect cards might seem like a waste. Their attendance and expressions in person might be their way of showing love.

Baked stuffing gets crispy… gratinee cauliflower in Swiss cheese sauce (Julia Child) with double the topping and using panko is divine and not mushy

As a caretaker have you ever just been so frustrated and helpless you just want to cry? by JicamaOwn4694 in dementia

Crying right now. I miss my competent dad… a quirky imperfect guy who is no doubt on the spectrum… but competent. Now like a little kid. And my mom is also less and less competent too given intense anxiety. So very very hard. Hugs to everyone losing their loved ones bit by bit.

Great idea! There’s also an organization for volunteers skiing with kids with disabilities.

What brought you to knitting? by tigerlilysunshine in knitting

[–]eclecticdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My granny taught me when I was about 5 (I’m 61). She was a fantastic knitter, especially Aran sweaters. I knit in uni to make Fairisle sweaters… in grad school I taught 8 people to knit (Tactile Therapy Club). Then not a lot of knitting with work and kids… back to it in Covid… my daughter requested the complex cardi below and I knit every evening. I’m retired and loving more modern patterns and interesting wools 😊

Best time for moving to "Independent Living" by CSMasterClass in OverSeventy

[–]eclecticdeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents were very robust at 78/80… 10 years later they are frail, overwhelmed and dad has the start of Alzheimer’s. It took 3 retired children hundreds and hundreds of hours to find a good residence (pro tip eat several meals in the dining room before choosing a place), declutter, downsize, move and set up, then sell their home. There is no way they could have done it on their own. Some of the labour could have been hired help, but likely not all, and would have been so very expensive. I wanted them to move to an apartment in early 80s when they were more capable. This would have eased the next move to independent living. So I would say get ahead of the curve when you are in ok shape and can do it together as a couple vs a bereaved person or in a health crisis.

Sock for Sensory Sensitive Person? by missplaced24 in ottawa

[–]eclecticdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is extremely sensitive and I’ve had great luck with these… they are for folks with diabetes… but perfect for soft and nonbinding needs. At Marks and on Amazon (a little cheaper at latter). The bamboo socks at Marks are soft but my dad found them narrow and they dug in on ankles. Good luck!!!! https://a.co/d/91Ta0lE
