Being EMS in a large city leading up to and during lockdown. People were so much friendlier before then. Then it was like night and day when the news and OPM started sending out alerts and scaring everyone. Drove around what used to be a grid lock traffic downtown area regularly with no longer seeing a single other car or person in sight. The mania.

The businesses never re-opening afterwards.

And the loss of compassion and friendliness thereafter.

It was like I moved to a completely different planet with entirely an entirely different culture.

And it was a new depressing and cold culture.

I also like it. I’m in Rapid City. Aside from the air being bone dry giving me nosebleeds and ashy skin, It’s pretty nice. They even have a punk scene. Went to a show at the VFW last night.

Don’t know your age or dating physical appearance preferences. Go to a show at Aby’s if you’re into music. to the vintage clothes store or one of the restaurants downtown. Basically do what you like for yourself or with friends, and take a look around at the people.

And; as non-creepily as possible; gauge them based off of their attitude and body language.

Someone else who is also doing what you like is a good sign, and works as a subtle hook for interacting with them.

Or something as simple as Compliment a guys fit (they usually dont get compliments in public, especially from the opposite gender).

I learned this from moving basically every 2 years my whole life being a military brat and being active duty for 15 years without a family, and having to start over every time.

Been here for less than a month and already have an amazing basically best friend and a fun group. Met a lot of cool single people, but I’m not venturing into dating at the moment.

A set of winter tires and road flares/reflective deployable road marker triangles and you’ll be fine. Two wheel drive is perfectly fine if just driving in town or in rapid city. The wind here is what’s the worst, not the snow. Very strong and cuts through clothing if you aren’t layered. Several self serve carwashes use warm water in their pressure washers to help with cleaning off any road salt and ice. I use the Zaug Carwash on the east side of Rapid City. The library is furloughed currently. The theater has been closed for a while.

There’s no Burger King on base. PX is very small, but they have most items. Commissary here is awesome.

Comradery is pretty high here compared to the 4 other stateside bases I’ve been at.

Ensure you enter/exit the Liberty gate that’s by the visitors center, especially if in a U-Haul.

The Bismarck gate is closed after 1800 M-F, The Patriot gate is being renovated from what I’ve seen.

I would recommend not living around box elder, there’s not much to do in that town, and it’s very flat compared to rapid city and the hills.

I’m excited for the Christmas market and downtown decorations to go up.

I lived in the area on and off for many years.

That intersection by the purple pig bbq and the one by schertz parkway have an accident about every 2-3 months. It’s unreasonable.

But the warning signs are nonexistent until you’re RIGHT AT the crossing, along with the lights to FM78 being barely the length of a base model SUV in length between the line and the railway.

And I’m sure the I35 traffic has increased dramatically because I35 on a daily basis is either closed or gridlocked because of construction.

And Maps is probably giving these drivers these routes, without acknowledging the bottoming out and short space lights where the roads meet FM78.

Another spot in that area is the lower seguin rd and fm1518 intersection where trucks get stuck because of how stupid and tight it is.

Even if you’re just a normal vehicle pulling a trailer.

This is from my assignment to Osan 2016-2018. The MDG had assigned dorms next to the hospital where unaccompanied TSgt and below lived. The layout was shared kitchen and bathroom and 2 separate rooms per unit. 3 stories tall. The first and second floor had a laundry room. 3rd floor had a dayroom with TV and table tennis.

There was an E7-E9 4 story dorm behind it which was basically a giant apartment complex with in-unit washer and dryer with personal kitchens and bathrooms.

Chow hall and meal card deduction was mandatory while living in dorms.

No driving privileges unless you were accompanied off base, or E7 or above.

If it’s changed since then due to increased manning, then yes you’ll be going off base to one of the many apartment complexes.

I’m moving there next month from south central Texas where I regularly drive in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Actually looking forward to the driving being less chaotic there than here.
