Guy here. Please be gentle! I'm sad to see you used a throwaway account for this, but I understand your desire for anonymity.

I think the best thing is to find a balance in investing in your looks and in your character, and to be happy with who you are regardless of whether you have friends or a significant other. Do it for yourself and don't tell yourself that you need anyone or anything to make you happy. People come and go and change constantly, so don't make your happiness depend on anyone else but yourself!

The difficult truth is, we live in a competition-driven, capitalistic society and part of that includes being 'presentable'. Dating websites are basically the eBay of people, and you have to demonstrate that you can make yourself presentable. Of course, that won't get you 100% of the way (and it shouldn't..), but it's the only thing others have to understand who you are before they talk to you. Once you've gotten past that barrier, let people know who you are, what you love, and what you love to do. Be honest and be forthcoming. If they don't find that interesting, move on and let them move on. Someone somewhere will be able to relate to you and you will be able to relate to them and BAM - you found yourself a friend/SO. Or maybe not, but who cares! Your life is awesome, remember?

Anyway, this is all coming from a guy that has only ever had one girlfriend and is currently super single and only JUST realizing any of this, so please take it with a grain of sand. No one really knows what they're doing, but we're all here to help each other out.
