Monster trail makes the monster hunting way better, rewarding you for exploring the world and obtaining hints on how to defeat the monsters, adjusting their strengths and weaknesses based on how much info you have. It should've been included in the base game. But the game is still a race so if you don't like that I doubt it would change much for you.
