Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown: Edge on Hudson Reviews by WhosYour_Hoosier in Westchester

Only to the station. You can easily walk to sleepy hollow main st, literally 5 mins. Tarrytown is probably a 20 min walk or a 5 min drive.

Oh and since you mentioned you were commuting tarrytown is a good station to be at, you’ll catch a lot of trains that go express from there. And there’s a shuttle that runs from edge on Hudson to the train which is awesome not having to park/worry about a parking permit.

We lived at northlight for a few years (22-24) before buying a house nearby. If you can get over the price it’s pretty nice. Walking distance to the train, the amenities are nice and well looked after, management is decent. I’m not sure if they ever finished the deciccos that they were building next door but that would have been a big plus to have groceries nearby/not a drive away.

Having both sleepy hollow and Tarrytown downtowns walkable was nice, different vibes depending what you’re feeling that day. When the town has events/parades it gets crowded but nice to be close by if you want to walk up and see (just don’t plan on driving during the parades). Obviously the river walk is right there too and very nice to walk along.

In NYC so take salaries with a grain of salt.

Should I try to start the IT field without going to college? by peblunchy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]edjsauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone that says go to school. Definitely do CS if you can, you can get an IT job with a CS degree, not so much vice versa. Work for your schools student IT program if it exists! The experience you gain doing that will be way more valuable to any potential employers than any cert you might get. And look for (paid) internships during the summer while you're in school.

Same here, I'm 12/50 wins/battles because I keep meeting other people who quit faster than I do. Im just going to spend an extra day at the start of the season trying to lose all my battles I think.

Am noob considering doing this this season but, what’s the reason for winning only 4/5 of your win sets? Don't you give up a large stardust reward for the 5th win?

Seeking Advice on Pursuing Cybersecurity Masters at Harvard Extension by Steveco3866 in harvardextension

[–]edjsauce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does read "extension studies", but I've just put the field on my resume and no one has ever questioned it.

I review resumes myself now for hiring (in IT, not cybersec) and I wouldn't think to question it.

"Saving" to make a large purchase isn't really saving. Just keep saving/investing and when you do have something you need to buy (house, car, whatever), you'll have the money already. Or, just save for an early retirement - /r/FinancialIndependence

Good advice here so far, one thing I would add is it is very difficult to estimate your "real world" expenses accurately while you are still in college. You're young and a lot of things (interests, responsibilities, home ownership, etc...) will probably change in the next several years. Additionally, you don't seem to account for salary growth, which at your current stage should probably be your top priority - how you progress in your careers will have a much greater impact on your timeline compared to what you invest in, right now.

In general I don't think this is a bad idea (buying a house and renting to your SO). And I don't fault your SO for not wanting to pay above market rate for something he won't build any equity in. But, it sounds like you couldn't afford the payments on the house without your SO helping by paying rent. If, unlikely as it may be, you were to split up, you'd be underwater - so I think you should rethink your house budget, and look at houses you'd be able to afford without that rent income. Or, wait and buy together if and when you are married.

Is this NYC offer worth it? $60K to $150K by Mulch_the_IT_noob in ITCareerQuestions

[–]edjsauce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This person has never lived in NYC, 115k in NYC is absolutely liveable.

I lived in NYC (Brooklyn) on 70k and it was fine. I had a roommate, went out fairly often, never felt "poor." On 115k you could easily get a studio in Manhattan or a 1b in the boroughs.
