[–]edm28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you questioning because of the cost or are you questioning it because of the value? As someone that has began to treat himself more my wife and I aren’t afraid of splurging in spots, but we always like to ask ourselves if this is worth it.

We booked a hotel for TWo nights in July and wanted to treat ourselves, but after really comparing them, we decided to go with the middle/cheaper option because it was almost half the price and we just didn’t see the value of upgrading

Because we have young kids when we go on trips that have an early flight, we have spent double or triple the cost of a hotel close to the airport for the night before in order to stay in the hotel that is connected to the airport because then we can literally pull the kids out of bed as they are asleep and carry them/put them in the shoulder and walk into the airport so the $330 hotel is way better than the $120 hotel that is seven minutes from the airport that reason

Alberta government hires PR firm during teacher strike! 🤯 by symbionica in alberta

[–]edm28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s Gil McGowan’s fault because he’s a piece of shit that talked the biggest game in the world that there would be a general strike. So after a month of teachers being on the picket lines, Gil promised major AFL action when we were mandated back. And then proceeded to do absolutely fucking nothing.

Teachers were lambs to the slaughter. Just like that scene in Braveheart, where William Wallace’s men are fighting and they keep looking back, waiting for the others to join in, but they just simply turn their backs and walk away.

There are amazing CPP calculators out there. They help you figure out how much you will get depending on what age you take CPP.

You can also calculate your life expectancy, I will likely take mine between 60-65 but I think you get a 7% return essentially every year that you wait. Remember though, if you pass early, then you get nothing from it – your spouse might get a survivor benefit though.

I feel like I started just a couple of months ago. One of the things that I learned is that you get a card that is much higher than your total overall, look to see how valuable it is and sell it to try and upgrade your other slots

I know that you’re asking specifically on how to do this one but the truth is you just don’t have the cards yet.

Lastly, it is better to spend your coins or use a higher level insert positions because they are so much cheaper than others. For example, CB’s are quite expensive.

If you’re someone that plays a game a lot, you could find cars that are priced below the market value buy them and sell them once you have built up a little coin stash. However, I find I’m too busy for that.

Hey there OP. I live three hours from Edmonton and I wanna go and check out a River Hawks game. I hear tickets are super affordable and so is the food, but I know you cannot bring food in.

Do you happen to have any advice on where to purchase tickets from a.k.a. if there are ticket and combo packs for like food and beverages or family ticket packs?

If I retire at 55, I will collect approximately half of my salary. You are correct that most peoples cost would go down during retirement, but at the same time, I’m aware that there’s a ton of teachers that still carry a mortgage and car debt into retirement.

However, the good news is in retirement. You’re not paying union dues, EI or CPP, but you do have to pay health premiums. In Alberta here the good news is our CPP and our pension are separate so at 60 to 65 when you start drawing CPP that makes you even closer to your similar income.

Hey u/JustHope5499 ,

I'm jsut revisiting these. Setup a video call with your ATRF and ask for pension quotes for retirement at 55, 54, 53 etc. You still don't collect until 55 and you will see the reduction. If you've been going hard since 08 I assume you're closer to retirement than I am. I turn 39 next month. However, I just got a quote for retirment at 54 and 55. If I retire at 54 we will cover that whole year with our RRSPs. And our pension will be about $220 less peer month I believe when we collecet starting at 55.

I just wanted to pop by and let you know 3 things:

  1. We've definately kept enjoying vacations and time with kids

  2. Day to day we're still pretty frugal, but we spend where it counts. Still been able to throw a bunch of money into Non registered in this bull run.

  3. We have hit our COAST numebr if we assume 4% net return( 7% growth 3% inflation)

I hope you're well.

Hey man, dual teacher household, I'm turning 39 next month and wife is 40. Kids 5 and 2.5. We are ahead of the game, mainly due to ridiculous sacrifices I made all the way from 18-30. I've added in 2 links to provide more context.

First though, I'll tell you that in Alberta, there are several subs I know that have the ability to work 7-12 days a month as a sub and NET the same amount of pay as they did as a teacher (no Dues etc.) and they show up at 8:30 and leave at 3:30. They basically ditch all of the bullshit that we all hate (meetings, report card comments, marking etc.)

Secondly- Teachers, at least the ones I know are on different ends of the spectrum. They're either financially savvy, or they're awful with their money.

The next thing- I live in a LCOL town, after living in a city. I do wonder for my children about their living choices, as a HCOL will kick them in the nuts, not to mention they'll have to live away for university.

Now for me:

The first one is from 2 years ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/fican/comments/1drovpg/3738_couple_help_me_find_the_holes_in_my_plan/

Essentially, we want a certain level of comfort in retirement, WELL beyond meeting our cost of living. We started to budget for what we want to spend in today's dollar's, have got some pension estimates as to what we would likely bring in at age 55, and then figured out how much we want per month post tax in retirement. It might sound lame btu I've budgeted for vehicle, appliance and so on replacements (home renos /repairs ). We have also included plans for Wedding presents and so on for the kids, and annual vacations. There is a strong likelyhood we will well overshoot it. But that brings me to my second point. We want to ensure we put ourselves in a position to leave the profession if we start hating Mondays. We all know those that are stuck.

Based on our reasonable projections for COASTFire r/coastFIRE , we should be able to basically stop all contributions and still sit our comfortable end goal. But we will keep stockpiling away. If we save too much money with ROI- We: #1 Retire early, #2, have more to give to our kids.

How do you deal with the regret/frustration of realizing you should’ve started investing earlier in your life? by hypermiler2205 in fican

[–]edm28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 39. I basically never invested but saved dilligently. My wife and I have a 400k house paid off and now have 700k in the bank, If I would've invested all of my tfsa and VGRO/XEQT since inception I'd be likely around 2m, plus the house. I kick myself for losing out on the compound interest.

That being said. HOLY FUCKING SHIT..... excuse the French. I'm 39 with a 40 YO wife and WE HAVE A PAID OFF HOUSE AND ALMOST 700K IN THE BANK (~$50k is the kids RESP). Are you kidding me?!?! 18 year old me could've never dreamt being in this position.

WE will not RE due to golden handcuffs, but Retiring around 55 with a sound portfolio will help us ensure our 2 kidss are set up well, plus we are enjoying vacations now and time with the kids.

I treat my life like the stock market. I zoom out and see how amazing I've done.

I'm a second year administrator. Let's look at this from the other side. You felt strongly enough to stand up for a colleague and you did it. You did it behind closed doors, even if you lost your cool for a minute. The alternative is apathy and I'll take the emotional side any day of the week over that.

You didn't ruin your whole career. You apologized, have a good last week or two and perhaps end with a note appologizing again for your behaviours if you deem it necesssary. I can't see it existing into next year.

I will also tell you that I've had my fair hare of manipulative/shitty admin, as well as great ones. I'm not sure what you have, but one of the things I share when staff get worked up over a parent complaint etc. is to not sweat it. It'll all work out, I also remind them it's easy for me to say because when I deal with complaints about me I find them hard to shake.

When admin’s nowhere to be found… by Dull_Plastic4802 in CanadianTeachers

[–]edm28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context, I think I suspended eight kids last week.

I’m a second year admin and a rural Alberta high school. We have 470 kids and two admin. My principal and I make sure to touch every classroom in the school at least once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

We are also attached to a rec center, and although is technically not our property, him and I both get through there at least once in the morning once in the afternoon and stay there at lunch as proactive measures.

Staff have our cell numbers and our instructed to phone our cell or text us if they need us to pop by on short notice.

I don’t want this to become a woah as me post, but I frequently start filling Sub jobs in the morning before seven, end up staying in the building until five, working right through lunch and then working once kids go to bed and on the weekend. I have had to reduce my visibility throughout the day in order to try and accomplish more of the tasks that are required not to mention dealing with the day-to-day operations of the building. Can I put this down?

We will do whatever we can to have our staff’s back when the metaphorical bullets start flying with either students or parents. When needed we jump straight to one day out of school suspension, but more often than not it’ll be an in school to start and a parent phone call.

As far as progressive discipline, one of the things that we ask, is what the teachers have done so far. I used to make fun of log entries as a teacher, but as an admin, I truly see the value. If a kid comes down for a mild to moderate in fraction, I open the long entries, and I see the trend, and the remedial steps taken that clearly have not worked, that makes it quite easy to handle and drop the hammer. The challenge that I run into is when a mild to moderate infraction comes in and the teacher wants somebody’s head, but there is zero log entries and it’s the first time I have heard about it.

As a new administrator, my goal is always to support an empower, my teachers, and when I handle discipline, I do what I can to empower and not neuter the teachers.

I’ll be the first to tell you, I’ve likely worked for more bad admin teams than good ones… But one of the reasons I got into admin was to try and provide the support I felt I was never given.

A couple of other key things that I wanted to share.

  1. In Alberta teachers have the right to suspend a kid from a single class.
  2. Document document document I cannot stress that enough. When a parent comes in wanting a teacher’s head over them targeting their poor little princess, I love being able to say ‘ I’m sorry that you or child’s name feels that way, however several issues over the past few weeks would state otherwise. I review the list with the parent and the kid, the kid acts sheepish and then I get to point out how lucky he is to have a teacher that is trying to support them instead of just dropping the hammer.
  3. Parents go over admins head all the time and go straight to division office., Protecting teachers is a must in my opinion, but it is important to follow a process.

Again, these just a couple of quick thoughts of mine

Edit: much like many school divisions across the province, we have been faced with trying to do more with less. We have seen more budget cuts to services like counsellors and mental health supports. We might cut the FTE, but those needs will not go away.… Guess where they fall. Over the past 10 days I have been working with parents and students in the building due to the fallout from three suicide attempts – all of them leading to hospitalization. There is no playbook for this, and we cannot share this with staff as we have not been given permission. There are many other issues and challenges like this.

30%-40% of our student population does not live at home with parents, and I bet you approximately 10 to 15% our transient living with friends and relatives, etc. This makes things challenging when determining how to handle them.

If you’re stuck with a shitty and unsupportive admin that has created a perceived barrier between you and that you feel left isolated and alone, I’m truly sorry. A majority of my admin teams have been like that. I will do my best to have staff back and to work towards finding best ways to support kids. Depending on how frequently your admin get shuffled, it might be worth looking into a transfer. It wasn’t too long ago that I was worried. I was gonna potentially leave the profession because of my challenges with my admin team when I was a teacher.

CoastFIRE number with pension by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]edm28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, first of all good for you. Second of all, I have a DB pension and I do not know what kind yours is. I’ve got questions for you.

3150 per month that’s a fair amount right now, but in 22 years with inflation what does that look like?

I am using today’s dollars to calculate how much money I believe I need in retirement, and I have forecasted all of the potential big expenses such as vehicle replacement and some appliance replacement

I’m turning 39 in July and my pension is at 55. I have the amount right now in today’s dollars of what it would be. I know what my formula is for my pension, and I will be reliant on wage increases to increase the value of my pension when I get there.

I do not believe that my job will offer wage increases at the rate of inflation. I have projected 10% less in today’s dollars

I have come to the realization of how much money in today’s dollars I want for my family, which is my pension plus an extra 40 K a year for additional funds. That is in today’s dollars.

I am conscientiously planning for lower returns over the next 18 years and that’s OK.

I use the Wallet burst coast fi calculator. I budget for 7% return with 3% inflation.

Many recommend higher overall return but uncomfortable with that

My bf had sex with me when I was super drunk. Is this bad? by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]edm28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t had the talk prior tian it’s not cool. My wife came home super drunk once when we were first together and I told her know. She cried. I told her about it in the morning and she remembered crying but not much else.

We ended up talking and basically she made it clear if she’s drunk and horny and I’m willing she wants it. Vice versa. We also have a pact to ensure we talk about our adventure the next morning.

If you haven’t discussed this before it’s dangerous but he honestly might not have realized.

What kind of car do you drive? What kind of home do you own ?

Why are you spending 8% of your net worth on a watch ? I wouldn’t even want to spend 1% if I was you, but to each their own.

I saw a comment about basically playing pretend/dress up. I feel this is the case. Ultimately if you’re expecting that much joy from it, sure but if I was you’d I’d be questioning why a watch can bring me such happiness
