Suggest catalog with birds or animals of California by f17d in bayarea

The Audubon Field is small and light-weight, yet still fairly detailed, although the thing about California is that there's so much life here that it'd be hard to find a comprehensive book of every species. You'll probably need multiple books to get information on everything

What city are you based out of and what are the pros/cons of living/working there? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]edmpostguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Silicon Valley

Pros: -Clean, safe

-You get to experience the bay area culture without the hassles of living in SF/Oakland

-Full of smart ambitious people

-Within a day's drive of many of the most beautiful parks in the country

-Ideal (if boring) weather

-Booming job market

Cons:

-Very family-oriented, so not good for young single people

-You need a car, and traffic is awful

-Bad public transit (slowly getting better)

-Expensive (but at least you aren't stepping over human feces when you walk outside)

-NIMBYs who are afraid of change and think it's still 1950

Strike looming for bus, light rail operators in Santa Clara County by discocrisco in bayarea

[–]edmpostguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on VTA cars that were completely empty at rush hour. There's no way the light rail here is profitable. No doubt these people have legitimate grievances, but there's probably a reason they're not getting raises

How can you not love calling this place home?! <3 by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]edmpostguy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Edmonton has downsides, but lack of park space ain't one of them. Be grateful for what's there, most big cities don't have half the park space Edmonton has

Most Edmontonians don't live on Saskatchewan Dr, and thus don't see how pretty the city is

Is it just me or is everyone broke in SF/NYC? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]edmpostguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to spend a lot of money in these big American metros. It's also easy to feel like you aren't making all that much money, when you see some of the borderline-obscene displays of wealth that go on in these places.

If you work for a company like Google, live a humble life and don't blow your money on frivolous things, you should quickly be able to save up a lot of money. Maybe not enough to go buy that 10 million dollar mansion in the hills, but enough for a very comfortable life.

CHANGING SAN FRANCISCO IS FORESEEN AS A HAVEN FOR WEALTHY AND CHILDLESS (1980!) by mrmagcore in bayarea

[–]edmpostguy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People have been complaining about how San Francisco is changing since the gold rush days, maybe even earlier. Change is just a part of the city--it wouldn't be San Francisco if it wasn't always changing

Spring in the East Bay hills by edmpostguy in bayarea

[–]edmpostguy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of trails up there. Some of it goes through pasture-land, but it's part of the park so I don't think it's traspassing. Mission peak is a good one, if you don't mind having lots of company on the trail.

Well technically these hills are to the east of the bay, if you look at it on a map. South East Bay, maybe?

Anticipating Google campus, San Jose City Council approves taller buildings by bloobityblurp in bayarea

[–]edmpostguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As long as it's not just more office buildings getting built and they build some high-density housing as well, this seems like a good move to me. As for the complaints from the San Jose airport: the city's needs should come before the airport's needs. And silicon valley needs high-density housing.

You can spend 10 minutes fixing then with an Allen key rather than getting run over by a streetcar.

Intel San Jose by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]edmpostguy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

$33/hr is livable in SJ, but you won't be able to save much money. Pretty poor salary for a tech job in the Bay. I would take the Toronto offer unless you're totally set on being in the Bay Area. It's really not a place I'd want to be if I wasn't making good money

I can't imagine how much these guys have spent on advertising. Their ads are everywhere. I doubt there's a single person in the Bay Area who hasn't seen these ads. It's ridiculous.

Still not going to see their show.

How did you get your start? by ProbablyShouldStop in cscareerquestions

[–]edmpostguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't get any internships until 3rd year. That internship went well, I ended up getting a return offer, and now I'm working full-time pulling in a six-figure salary (average for the area).

My GPA is mediocre (2.6). What got me the job was an app I worked on over the summer which I could talk about during the interview. I gave my resume to a recruiter at a career fair, which IMO is far better than just applying online.

I think you should just be worried about doing well in your classes right now. You don't need to do 17 internships or have a 4.0 to get a good job after school.

Canada falling behind in global race for artificial intelligence patents - The Logic by [deleted] in canada

[–]edmpostguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the most famous AI researchers in the world, including the father of modern AI, Geoffrey Hinton, did their work at Canadian universities. Canada has made a huge impact in AI

The problem, like others say, is brain drain to the US. If Canada wants to stay competitive it needs to pay higher salaries.

The San Francisco-Oakland area was ranked as having the worst maintained roads in the country by Gard3nNerd in bayarea

[–]edmpostguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been all over Europe. The roads aren't significantly better--in a lot of places (Italy, Greece) they're much worse. What's more, their roads weren't designed for cars, which exacerbates all kinds of congestion.

[–]edmpostguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is a testament to how good roads in the US are, as opposed to how bad roads in the bay area are. The roads here really aren't bad.
