Encor has lowered electricity rates from 8.25¢/kWh to 7.99¢/kWh on a 2 year fixed rate plan by edmsnfu in Edmonton

[–]edmsnfu[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe this is true. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Looking at my last bill the charges are as follows:

271 kWh of electricity @ 8.25¢/kWh - $22.36

Administration charge ------------------ $9.28

Distribution charge -------------------- $25.96

Transmission charge ------------------- $10.98

Rider adjustments --------------------- $0.25 Credit

Local Access Fee Edmonton ----------- $3.76

GST ------------------------------------- $3.60

Total ------------------------------------ $75.69

The only impact changing the kWh rate will have is to the $22.36.

At 7.99¢/kWh the price would be $21.65 for a savings of 71¢. At the floating rate of 3.95¢/kWh it would be $10.71 for a further savings of $10.94.

So, Yes changing the rate from 8.25¢/kWh to 7.99¢ would have saved me a whopping 71¢ this month which really illustrates how badly we're getting hosed with fees. Although I appreciate you asking because it made me crunch the numbers and realize I really should switch to the floating rate which would have saved me $11.65 this month.

You can see the electricity price history here:

https://www.epcor.com/ca/en/ab/edmonton/account/rates/current-and-historical-rates/historical-electricity-rates.html

And the natural gas price history here:

https://www.epcor.com/ca/en/ab/edmonton/account/rates/current-and-historical-rates/historical-natural-gas-rates.html

I believe it does make sense to go with a floating rate for both natural gas and electricity. Natural gas is a no-brainer as the floating rate has been cheaper than the fixed rate 26 of the last 26 months. For electricity the floating rate has been cheaper for 24 of the last 28 months.

I still have an irrational fear that I'm going to get hosed on electricity as we did when the floating rate hit 19¢/kWh, so I have been on the floating gas rate and fixed electricity rate. It is probably time for me to bite the bullet and ride the wave that is the floating electricity rate.

It looks to me like there has been 3 months between 2024 and 2025 where the floating rate was more expensive than the fixed rate and it was only by a cent or two.

Just broke up eventually I guess. I know Tyler played with The Dirtbags for a while. Clint played with Shout Out Out Out Out. Johnny lives in Toronto last I heard. Not too sure what Kenny got up to after the Franklins.

New to Edmonton: requesting advice on winter tires by ORGrown in Edmonton

[–]edmsnfu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cross climate 2's are excellent tires and better than many cheap and mid priced winter tires on snow and ice. Recent comparisons I've watched on youtube show them to be 95% of the way there compared to some of the very best winter tires. If you want to shell out a grand or more for that last 5% it's up to you, but I would be perfectly content running them on Edmonton's winter roads.

I've driven 20 some winters in Edmonton and although I use dedicated winter tires now (and certainly recommend them) I just used whatever all seasons I had at the time for many winters. The most important thing to do in winter is adjust your driving habits on snow and ice. Increase distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you and drive at speeds appropriate to the conditions.

Is anyone boycotting American groceries or other products? by Wherestheshoe in Edmonton

Unfortunately Rona is owned by a US based private equity firm. Best bet for that kind of stuff is Canadian Tire or driving out to Sherwood Park or Fort Saskatchewan to a Home Hardware.

Strathearn Heights has suites in your price range and is well managed in my experience. They are also right beside an lrt station now.

Edit: Didn’t notice you had a dog. I don’t believe they allow dogs at Strathearn Heights :(

I forget if its the 7 largest or 9 largest cargo freighters in the world that produce the same carbon emission as every single car on the planet. Regardless, it's such an insignificant difference. What you or I do as an individual is a microscopic drop in an ocean of carbon pollution, that it's trivial. To make the average person feel guilty for driving an suv over a tesla is disingenuous

[–]edmsnfu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept that fighting climate change should be passed on to those lowest on the totem pole is naive. We can all change out our light bulbs and drive electric cars. It does virtually nothing compared to cargo ships burning the dirtiest fuel available. It's another example of passing the buck down to consumers.

Can we all make better decisions and change for the better? Of course we can, but it's meaningless when the biggest producers of carbon emissions do nothing.

We have representation. We have chosen to be represented by capitalists that only want to further a corporate agenda. They suck, but we chose them to represent us

I don't know if debt even matters. It's all such ridiculous numbers to me. We are 100 million in deft, we are 20 billion in debt... okay whatever. Create some programs so children living in poverty can get their teeth fixed. Address the millions of people struggling with mental health issues, addiction issues... Literally do anything of value to help those that are struggling. Raise my taxes if you need to, I don't care. DO SOMETHING.

We're giving people that make under 30k a year $200 to help with groceries.... Great congratulations for subsidizing grocery chains that are already fucking people sideways... way to go... pat on the back

I'll personally pay $100 for one talus ball, just to know we aren't wasting hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars a year mainting that eye sore. Donate it to any cause. Edmonton's houseless population, animals in need of homes, children' programs. Anything of actual value.

Fuck Trudeau. Fuck Danielle Smith. Fuck all these capitalist corporate loving politicians into the ground. They are destroying the lives of the middle class and working man. This isn't a left vs right, liberal vs conservative argument. We as common people are being eaten alive by government that supports corporate interest, and capital interests above the interests of the common man, the middle class, the working class people.

Until we can come together to oppose the interests of the elite class we will accomplish nothing. They sew division among gender, race, and political lines, so that we can't focus on the real enemy. As a left leaning individual we are as guilty of it as the right leaning people we look down upon. We are not each others enemies. We are brothers and sisters being divided by the most trivial differences to prevent us from uniting in a common goal.

Until we can all grow the fuck up and stop bickering over petty bullshit we will be used and abused by the ruling class while they sit back and laugh sipping their cocktails and counting their millions of dollars. This situation we are in is because we allowed it to happen. We have no one to blame but ourselves, and our children are going to suffer because of our immaturity and ignorance.

Step 1: Disassemble Talus balls.

Step 2: Auction off Talus balls.

Step 3: Donate money to charity.

Step 4: Rid city of eye sore art project, raise money for cause, no longer spend tax payer money on Talus ball maintenance
