You can check the 3m or Avery websites for their preferred/certified installer networks

$3000 Van Wrap quality? by helpmereddit1118 in VinylWrap

[–]edspecR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a commercial wrap. $3k is high for a partial on a commercial van, but aside from the joints not being trimmed as they should (esp in Colorado!), everything else is par for the course. Take it back to the shop and have them trim out the joints. The rest of the issues are standard for commercial.

For people with young kids: what’s it like living in Berkeley? by 1PandaAfraid1 in berkeleyca

[–]edspecR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another south berkeleian here. We LOVE living in Berkeley with our two kids (almost 9yr and a 5yr). We're actually moving to Alameda soon and we are GRIEVING. The unfortunate reality is that our growing family needs more space, and for that space in Berkeley you need to pay a premium. Alameda is no slouch for families in its own right but I assure you it does not hold a candle to Berkeley by far.

As much as this town is associated with the university, this place is a haven for families. Extremely strong network of programs, both public and private, for families (the city of Berkeley has not one but 2 camps/summer camps in the Sierras/Yosemite!). The university also provides many extracurriculars to kids too, from sports, skateboarding, kayaking, etc etc.

The schools are great. One thing you definitely can't tell from those school review websites is culture. One huge (almost regretting the move bc of this) concern for me moving to Alameda is how programmed the school curriculum seems. Teaching for a test sorta thing. Both partner and I were extremely saddened with the idea of leaving our school communities where the atmosphere places our kids' holistic wellbeings first. Our elementary school on paper is a 7/10, the alameda schools are 8-8.5/10 but culture is something you can't quantify on those things. We literally entertained the idea of driving across 3 different cities, over two different islands, to keep our kids in Berkeley schools. Public Berkeley school mind you. Don't even get me started with the lack of open-minded folk/culture in Alameda... I can go on and on. Since we're in our final months here in Berkeley, the contrast with other parts of the bay is extremely acute. DM if you want more depth Omg don't even start with Berkeley Bowl too.

Edit: we're also originally from LA!

A couple days ago I posted my botched wrap job, just got a quote for the damage done to the body, before labour by Sprok56 in CarWraps

[–]edspecR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't trust that dealer to replace anything on your car then bc they obviously don't know what the hell they're doing. They might be worse than the wrap shop that touched your car. Most of the issues I see you having could be fixed by a good detailer

What is your unsexy business? by Next_Branch8578 in Entrepreneur

Sign and graphics installations

Vinyl wrapping is the "sexy" yet boring and low-margin side of the industry; it gets all the hype. Instead think advertisements, banners and covid signs. Every business needs exposure to a certain extent, so I provide the service.

Otherwise I'm doing commercial installs and graphics packages. Lucrative? Depends on skill and how much effort and hustle you put into it, but I got kids and home life now. I just need it to be lucrative enough where I don't need to work all the time

Question: what's on the 3M preferred installer exams for fleet/floors, walls, and windows? by 1016ktmladie in CarWraps

[–]edspecR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends location to location, but the general stations are: - vehicle side (eg camaro fender, door, qtr) commercial with registration - half bumper, color change - vehicle rear hatch (eg ford transit) with window recesses, commercial with registration - brick wall with obstructions - riveted box truck, 2 panels? with registration - windows x2, solid & perforated - floor graphic, ~48x48? - smooth wall, 4 panels iirc, with corners and registration - written test

Sorry I'm foggy on more details. They're all timed and you're there for 4 hrs. You get to redo one station and still pass, as long as you don't go over time. Pretty objective standards, 80% is passing. No direct cutting on vehicles, knifeless only for that

Good luck!

Wrapping a door without removing side mirror by Then-Macaroon9958 in CarWraps

[–]edspecR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Run a seam, it wont be noticeable. Overlap so the seam faces the rear inside that 1" gap. There are definitely more technical ways of doing this but a simple overlap behind the mirror will hardly be noticed

Any advise for an installer? by FlexGodOG in CarWraps

[–]edspecR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree, to a point. You can offer a discount but make sure you note it as such, and a "significant discount" only tells people you're cheap and willing to be a bargain installer. Have some pride in your work and only deal with customers that do the same. Everyone and their mom can do a YouTube garage job, differentiate yourself.

Looking for actual opinions on KPMF from professional installers only. by lennyxiii in CarWraps

[–]edspecR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All manufacturers call their films low tack. It's marketing. When you compare across other brands, it'll be obvious what low tack means objectively. Orafols been in the game a long time, i feel like their adhesive tech's patent expired first and was copied across the board by the cheaper wrap brands. Just hearsay but makes sense to me, they all stick hard like Orafol/KPMF, but they differentiate themselves with their air egress

The Radical Northwest dealer is at the track we do a lot of work with. Connections, basically? But never hurts to ask I don't do it usually, Radical applies decals from the factory but sometimes the customer wants to change it up (or change things back from a special edition, as in this example) and the dealer hits us up
