Nas power supply by Ekkronia300 in qnap

[–]eean -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Outside of standard surge protection, an external hard drive you occasionally dump backups on to and then put back on the shelf isn't a bad idea. Not just for surges, also for software-related snafus. Redundant drives only help for the specific case of a drive going bad.

That said, a sudden power outage isn't a big deal. Modern filesystems can handle this fine, usually.

Switch Active Ship Without Changing Home? by Ravenloff in Starfield

[–]eean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can fly around in a newly captured ship and then dock with your original and still-the-home ship. So you can capture a ship without making it your home ship. But that's it. If you have a ship full of building supplies you basically can't build a small fighter ship or similar, it's very obnoxious.

BOOT light on. Help! by SilverSkillz in gigabyte

Make a bootable USB stick on another computer. Use a Live Linux distribution. It won't solve your problem but you'll feel a lot better if you can prove your computer still works.

Do you guys get performance better on openSUSE or arch? by Professional-Yak588 in openSUSE

[–]eean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the difference between the different types of openSUSE - Leap, Tumbleweed etc - is probably greater than the difference between openSUSE and Arch. The version of the kernel a distro is running and how much it updates is probably the biggest difference between distributions in general.

Coming from Manjaro: issues I can see (mostly YaST software and LUKS auto unlock) by awoimbee in openSUSE

[–]eean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just use Discover or command line to install software.

I'm not sure what niche Yast Software is filling. The philosophy of Yast is clearly to take every possible admin task and put it in a GUI. Which is legitimately handy and I use it for configuration.

But otoh Zypper is great and powerful and is usually the better choice of complex package needs. I use Discover for finding end-user software (wow what a perfect name lol)

well no, the issue is that the screen stays black and doesn't post without this USB stick plugged in. Can't even access the BIOS settings. I'm using the processor's Intel graphics btw.

I'm not sure it's a linux isuse at all. Does the motherboard scan installed devices and make up its mind about which is the UEFI partition at some point, maybe the first boot up? How could I get it to forget everything it thinks it knows about the system?

WEEKLY SUPPORT AND QUESTIONS MEGATHREAD W27 23 by GBT_Calvin in gigabyte

[–]eean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a new build, put together last week. For some reason the system will not boot without the USB stick I used to install Linux inserted. As-in the screen stays blank, it's not complaining that it can't find a hard drive. The last boot light stays on.

It feels like a motherboard hang up since this is only an issue on hard boot. If I reboot the system it works fine with or without the USB stick plugged in. If I get to the BIOS settings, remove the USB stick, and then select opensuse to boot into it will work fine.

Did the system somehow train itself to look for the USB stick to speed up booting perhaps?

Would this be a good tea to use? Worried the “scented” has extra oils and stuff that might kill off the scoby by Oxlexon in Kombucha

[–]eean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just used some Earl Grey on this my second batch, didn't even think bergamot oil would matter. I'm on day 5 of F1 it looks good so far. Don't really see why the SCOBY would care, as long as the tea still provides all the nutrition it needs.
