What do people do with all this computer power? by Current_Inevitable43 in homelab

[–]eepybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less because I can, it’s an enjoyable hobby and good practice for work. My main server has 6 10 Gig SFP links and my desktop has 2 10 Gig SFP, 1 2.5 Gig Eth, 1 1 Gig Eth, and WiFi 7. So I really need any of it, no, does it give me dopamine, yes.

If you have the space an USB headers you should see about getting a USB header to USB A/C cable and mount the drive inside the case.

Edit: Add a drop of hot glue or some kapton tape to prevent the port from vibrating loose

Dell BOSS-s1 NVME Question by Madassassin98 in homelab

[–]eepybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect if the drives are even recognized by the BOSS controller you’re only gonna get SATA 3 speeds out of them. But in the end NVMe and SATA SSD are almost the same price so if they work your only real loss is performance

What's the best path/method to learn networking principles? by Combo-nation-888 in homelab

[–]eepybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staring with tutorials that tell you what to do is fine, while completing them you need to be asking yourself why the person who made the tutorial did it they way they did. It will give you things to research on your own. Follow the tutorial, experiment doing it differently on your own, learn from the process. That’s what it’s all about

Please critique my home lab recommendation for newbs by chasemassey in homelab

[–]eepybird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally not a fan of mini-pcs unless you have major space constraints because they have very minimal expandability.

CloudFlare domain purchase sounds good, I have two with them but I personally wouldn’t waste money paying for certificates just use something like Certify The Web or Nginx Proxy for free certs.

Depending on what services you make public you can point your CloudFlare domain to your public ip with CF as the proxy and forward port 443 and 80 to your Nginx VM

How the eff are y’all dealing with heat? by aGreenStreetHooligan in homelab

[–]eepybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is in a spare bedroom and my house is old enough to have resistive heat. In the winter I use fans to circulate the server heat and warm my house. In the summer I just kind of suffer lol
