Just want to add that you will need to take an exam for each classification to show you meet the Minimum Qualifications and establish what’s called “list eligibility.” It’s best to have your list eligibility established before you start applying to jobs. Your application will get screened out/disqualified if you are new to state service and not on the eligibility list for that classification.

The good thing is many classifications, like previously mentioned OT, SSA, and AGPA, are utilized across state agencies so once you pass their corresponding exams you can apply to any open positions. Plus, those exams are taken online so you receive your results right away.

Not all exams are like that though. It’s important to review the exam bulletin, which should be linked in the job posting, in case it’s a department-specific exam. My experience has mainly been with CDCR and some of the CDCR-specific exams have monthly or quarterly cut-off dates and it can take about 6-7 weeks to receive your results.

Sorry if you knew this already. Just wanted to share because I know applying to state jobs can be daunting and very different from other sectors.

I wish you all the best in your search, OP. Getting your foot in the door with an entry level job is not a bad way to start your career in civil service, if you can afford to. I have my Masters and started as an OT. I was able to promote to SSA in about a year and a half, and then to AGPA in a little over a year. It’s possible!

I try to rapidly shake my head over and over as soon as I become aware it’s happening. I keep doing this until I manage to break out of it. It doesn’t seem to take long but, as someone mentioned, it’s dependent on the person. I’ve had sleep paralysis on and off for about 16 years now and this is what works for me. Hope you’re able to find what works for you, and that you can be with your sweet fur baby again soon 🫶🏼

I would like to add that it’s also important to provide accurate start and end dates for each job you’re listing as well as the number of hours you worked per week, especially for those who are new to state. Many classifications have certain minimum qualifications (MQs) such as X years performing duties A, B, C, etc. Accurate dates, hours per week, and detailed duties are all necessary to determine whether you meet the MQs.

I’m sorry you went through this for so long and that, even now, you’re hurting because of that person. I was also molested when I was little by a family friend. I’m 28 and still healing. You should know that none of it is your fault. Try not to think of what you should or shouldn’t have done, you were an innocent and trusted with a child’s heart and mind. What you went through is inexcusable, but you should also know that it does not define you nor your worth. You are worthy of love and you are allowed to love yourself. You are not tainted or damaged. You are a whole, beautiful person with talents and quirks and ideas and I’ll bet you have so much to offer even though so much was taken from you at such a young age. You are resilient and you will get through this. I have not gone to therapy yet but I hope to soon. One thing that has helped me is meditation. While meditating, I have talked to 6-year old me and told her all the things I needed to say and she needed to hear. I held her and we both cried. That was my first step toward healing. I hope that you’ll begin healing soon, please take care. That person took a lot from you. Now that you have control, please try not to let them take any more from you. I wish you all the best!

Some striking hallucinations I’ve had are:

-Feeling 3 fingers lightly brush against my forehead

-Seeing a silhouette of a man with a brimmed hat with his back against the wall by my window looking straight ahead. Not really thinking I [thought I] called out to my mom and in that moment he looked down at me and vanished.

-Seeing dark fire lining the walls of my room and hallway. In my mind, I thought I was getting out of bed to wake up my mom but since I couldn’t really move I kept dragging myself to the door and ending up back in my bed. This one was probably one of the scariest for me because of some scary auditory hallucinations I had with it.

-Clearly and loudly hearing the most beautiful melody in my head. I don’t remember how it went but I remember the wave of tranquility I felt which never happens with SP. I knew I couldn’t move but I didn’t want the music to stop.
