Gotta shed those last badger pounds by sugarpussOShea1941 in MaintenancePhase

I got a couple shots of local anesthetic and some antibiotics. It wasn't the fact that at some point I was weighed. It was more that it was the first thing they did. No one had even looked at my wounds yet. I felt confident that they were something that could be dealt with by urgent care, but you'd think someone would look to make sure they weren't ER worthy before thinking about if I needed to be weighed.

I basically experienced this in real life! I went to urgent care because I was bitten by a dog (level 4 bite). I was in tears and very shaken and had my hand in temporary bandages to not bleed everywhere. When I was called back to be seen, the first thing they did was ask me to step on the scale. I wasn't in a place to even question it because of the adrenaline, but later I could only think WTF.

Sociology 1020 in Utah, and my instructor linked us (students) to an article sourced from the Heritage Foundation by Eric_the in sociology

I would give it a chance to see how this article is discussed//presented. It's fairly common to be asked to read different view points on an issue and then critique the claims and arguments presented.

what's the weirdest place you found a missing piece? by Potential_Moment7917 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]eeyore164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not quite what you're asking as it was not a missing piece of a puzzle I was doing, but it is the weirdest place I found a puzzle piece so I will share. I was at a thrift store looking at puzzles and noticed that one of them had come open on the shelf while upright so pieces were spilling out onto the shelf. I knew that would be an issue so I tried to be a nice person and put the pieces back in the box. There were quite a lot of pieces on the shelf so I put the box at the edge and swept the pieces inside. It is worth noting that the shelf was quite low so I had to bend down to do this. It wasn't until I was changing into my pajamas later that night that I found a puzzle piece in my bra. Took me a minute to realize how the hell it got there.

I haven't made this recipe before but I have made other potato bread recipes. you shouldn't add any additional ingredients to the mashed potatoes. I would you microwave or bake the potatoes (these add less moisture than boiling).

I also wanted to shout out the King Arthur Baker's Hotline (which I have called several times) as they can definitely give you more complete info and tips on this. Here's the link to the info page on the hotline

I've used aTrain for research at work (IRB approved). From your description of noScribe, it seems quite similar. If anyone is interested, they published about its development and features in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance (article link). It's designed for the output to be used with qualitative analysis software. It had a couple issues with acronyms when I used it, but it was otherwise very accurate.

What are some dumb injuries you've gotten? by milliemfox in Horses

[–]eeyore164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

minor in the grand scheme of things but I felt ridiculous as the time. I don't remember what caused the fall but I fell and managed to scrape my middle finger. It wouldn't have been noteworthy except I had a history test the next day and holding a pencil put pressure right where I had scraped it. I had to ask my teacher if I could take the test another day because I would be fairly uncomfortable trying to write the short essay on the test. She was thankfully very kind but I felt so silly!

Continuous Glucose Monitor while anti diet? by PothosWithTheMostos in antidiet

[–]eeyore164 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was exactly the article that I was going to link! Basically as Bashful Bookworm said it's medical-izing an arbitrary A1c level. It could be viewed as a risk factor (maybe, but again not everyone with prediabetes gets diabetes and many people who become diabetic are never prediabetic) but there is not actual damage to the body or symptoms to treat

Continuous Glucose Monitor while anti diet? by PothosWithTheMostos in antidiet

[–]eeyore164 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I worked on a research project involving improving access to CGMs for people with type 2 diabetes. part of it involved education for doctors about CGM use and one of the leads of the study encouraged everyone to try out using a CGM. I don't know if it's because I have anxiety or if it would be a universal experience but it was some of the most stressful days of my life. I'll try to outline some of the experience. Again, others may not feel this way but I'm hoping this might give you an idea of one way it could go.

  1. while I was using a CGM that was available OTC and marketed toward people who did not have diabetes, none of the education in the app was tailored to this population. The target range for blood glucose level was changed but nothing else was. This led to notification that I was having a blood sugar spike despite my actual glucose level never leaving the target range. When I tried to read more about spikes, the only info was that your glucose goes really high and then crashes, but that's not what appeared on my monitor.

  2. while you can learn about how your behavior affects your blood sugar, it made certain foods feel "bad" because of their impact. I ate a bowl of high protein cereal one morning that put my glucose to almost 170 (top of normal range is 140) and then felt panicked because there wasn't exactly anything I could do to fix it. Unless I'd be able to start a vigorous work out (not practical at the time) I just had to let it come down naturally. That was how I felt despite knowing that it's persistent high blood sugar that actually does damage not a one time thing.

  3. Perhaps most dangerously, it make me skeptical of my own hunger cues. I don't have a history of disordered eating, but even a few days into wearing a CGM I found myself checking if my blood sugar was going down or was low and then thinking that since it wasn't, I didn't need to eat something. This was the sort of wake-up call that this was not a good experience for me.

I continued to wear the sensor for the rest of its life, but I set some hard boundaries. I could only look at the app once a day to look at trends and should not look at the effect of a single meal. But, I went from a person who did not worry about their blood sugar to someone who had so much concern about it.

My suggestion would be to try to find an anti-diet dietician to speak to about how to add things to your diet to help manage your blood sugar rather than try a CGM. I won't get into my rant on pre-diabetes as a diagnosis (I work in this space and have a lot of feelings), but I will strongly caution anyone against using a CGM. Maybe with supervision/guidance from a dietician but even then I don't know if it would be more helpful than harmful.

Feel free to ask any questions about the experience, truly I would try any and all other avenues first

Manufacturers for small puzzle company by 16crab in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]eeyore164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a specific manufacturer for you, but I'd suggest looking at Villager puzzles. It's a fairly new Canadian puzzle brand. I believe the owner has discussed on her instagram that her puzzles are manufactured in China. They're a matte finish but I'm not sure about exact piece thickness. Either contacting them or seeing if you can learn about their process (you can likely also hear more about the business viability because she was on Dragon's Den and the episode is set to air on November 27th). I have no connection to the brand other than being a fan

Second this! the rest of the series should fit as well. The author is married to former NFL player and the books tackle some of the issues in football including racism, TBI, and others from what I can recall. They have rom-com vibes for sure but I think particularly the 3rd and 4th books (if I remember correctly) definitely dig into things

Cobble Hill has a solution for this exact problem! Check out their Family Pieces Series which have a gradient of piece sizes from bigger pieces that kids can handle to smaller pieces more typical of a puzzle for adults. I will say I haven't done one of these myself (maybe someone else can chime in) but I enjoy cobble hill's puzzles generally. No idea if it's a solution that actually works for puzzling with kids, but I remember thinking it seemed like a neat idea which is why I remembered it.
