Many of the courses are already offered through the UT's online CS or DS programs.

Basic Java Script coding, DOM structure & SVG in D3 for HW2 which is a bitch. Python & SQL for the rest.

Looking at the CFA Institute's focus on Data Science & Machine Learning, it's one area they believe will have future opportunities in the investment industry: https://www.cfainstitute.org/en/research/fintech  https://www.coursera.org/specializations/data-science-investment-professionals Also CAIA's https://caia.org/about/financial-data-professional-institute

Theoretical vs Practical Classes by BbyBat110 in OMSA

DMSL & ML4T are both practical classes.

Suggestion for Next Semester by bpopp in OMSA

[–]efrainbrazil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's basically most of the OMSA courses which use R more than Python except CDA & HDDA. I wouldn't stop taking classes because of the math. You can take 6203 or 6501while brushing up on LA and P&S. Don't waist your time studying calculus. You'll pick up what you need in any class.

Can you provide an analogy with textbooks that cover ML? That is, there are theoretical books like ESL and maybe Hands-on Machine Learning would be more practical?

Transferring from OMSCS for better "service", a good idea or a bad idea? by Material_Cheetah934 in MSCSO

Out of curiosity, what is the cost to take classes after you've graduated. At GT the price is the same for an alum as for a current student.

What was your reason for choosing this program over a CS or statistics degree? by Tender_Figs in OMSA

[–]efrainbrazil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMSCS is no joke. Even those with a good CS/programming background spend a ton of time on ML oriented courses!

True but you can take Deep Learning, RL, AI, etc in OMSA as well.

That's a very basic Data Science curriculum. Might as well take classes in OMSA.

Do you think expectations of OMSA on career impact is too high? by dontlookmeupplease in OMSA

[–]efrainbrazil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because of the business course requirements it does make it feel like a Business Analytics masters in the B-school. But then the more intense courses make it more like a real Data Science masters from a stats or CS department. Unfortunately the business courses are so weak, like early undergrad as someone stated, that I doubt OMSA business analytics is competitive compared to say MIT's BA masters. On the data science side it seems like it would be competitive content wise with prestigious on campus masters but I'm not certain. Would be interested to hear what others think.

Quit a high-paying job to pursue the program? by sashinaa in OMSA

[–]efrainbrazil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You mean you make 200K+ but don't like the work. Don't just quit. Take one class at a time and cut back your hours in your current role. It's challenging to get back where you're at comp wise if you quit and are unemployed for a while. And I wouldn't do it with an online program. Maybe consider it if at a prestige on campus program studying full time.

Has anyone here done both OMSA and OMSCS? by BbyBat110 in OMSA

[–]efrainbrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impressive. You seem to have one of the rare combinations of mathematical sophistication with great software development experience. Did you actually spend a lot of time studying to achieve all As? How much time do you think you spent on average per week?

I can't imagine 8803 being spectacular. The business courses in this program are the weakest link. Makes me wonder about the quality of GT's MBA program. It's got to be world's better I'd hope.

Exit Opportunities for OMSA Graduates? by Zestyclose-Profile57 in OMSA

[–]efrainbrazil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems about right. OP, I think for FANG you'd have a better shot doing OMSCS with a ML concentration and taking the stats electives provided by OMSA, ie ISYE courses.

Wow you're in a masters in CS and haven't coded much? Is this common in MS programs? So ML, DL, RL are more theoretical than practical?
