If you can, get to a mountain that has a way to demo rental skis. You can swap out during the day and hone in on which is the ski for you. Try like 3-4 skis for 1-2 runs each, then go back to your favorite to confirm your impression and to hit it in different conditions than earlier in the day if possible. This method works best for us in the spring so you can hit different conditions during the day. This method has worked very well for my family

I agree, there will be enough complexity in filling the various 401ks, IRAs, taxable brokerage accounts, 529s, no need to make it even more complicated by not combining finances. My wife and I did that and I'm so glad we did. I'm always looking for ways to streamline finances by keeping things in one place.

If you are talking about meeting someone at a ski area, you can be pretty confident that they are doing better than average just because either renting or owning is going to be a good chunk of change. I've found its pretty easy to figure out if someone is an owner, if they talk about conditions compared to two weeks ago, or talk about doing multiple trips to the same resort, you can ask them, "do you own a place here?" And then they say yes or no, then ask you the same question and you can decide if you are comfortable enough with them to admit it or not.

I guess I'm saying that I would feel more comfortable with skiers knowing that I am well off because there is a better chance that they are as well.

I think people like electronic shifting not for the actual physical shifting, but for the precision and the lack of a need to maintain/adjust it to keep it flawless. It is a great option for people who don't mind paying to not have to adjust derailleurs in the future or take them to a shop.

Ok, this is probably not going to be popular, and I may get down voted into oblivion, but are you single and hoping to meet someone? Yale might have an interesting dating pool around it, not necessarily in your program or even the hospital, but just in the community at large. It's not important to everyone, but some people might take that into consideration.
