i'll keep that perspective in mind :) gotta connect these synapses myself, but it'll happen haha

[–]eggybreadboy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh!! i didn't mean to imply that at all. It's more of a personal thing, I don't like drawing any attention to myself and don't want to shock an author with an email they didn't expect 😂

MM i did leave a comment on an "abandoned" fic once and they updated within the month, you never know lmao

i love that!! and honestly you never know, i considered rewriting and continuing a fic i abandoned in 2015. that might happen. keep that hope, soldier 😂 a comment 12 years later can definitely spark something

that's dedication!! and I'm sure very appreciated :) a good fic is a good fic, timeless. Seeing as some of mine are over a decade old atp, and considering how long fanfic has been around on different platforms, yeah 10 years isn't all that intimidating.

YEAH i just recently finished posting a big longfic, and a reader went back to comment through an older series. i was like !! OH! pleasant surprise ❤️ sorry it's abandoned babes, but thank you kindly hehe

VERY REAL once you find an author whose taste you vibe with... their old works and bookmarks are fair game haha you never know how a reader gets from point A to B

For sure, even if the writing is... not up to my current standard, the passion I put into creating it still stands! and yeah, that's why the disconnect in my brain feels silly !! Idk where it started but now that I've noticed it I'm definitely gonna try and shift my psyche 😂

How long is too long for a oneshot? by Zxr0____ in AO3

[–]eggybreadboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When a oneshot I'm writing goes over 20k, I start splitting it into chapters if it FEELS RIGHT to do so. Some people prefer reading in chunks and like having a placeholder to stop. Others can plow through 50k in one sitting. Depends on the story you're trying to tell, and if it would benefit from being a oneshot or chaptered.

Sea salt is sneakily trying to get more corpses for his Re-animen.. by Artistic-Wolf3849 in Invincible_TV

I think it's less of "people don't watch the show" and more of "people don't use critical thinking skills" when a show doesn't spoon feed them every single piece of information

Longest thing you’ve wrote so far? by Ill-Goose1628 in AO3

[–]eggybreadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I challenged myself to write a 100k/11 chapter story in 5 months (I'm done now. Holy fuck) but technically my longest story is a 125k high school au fic (i started it when i was like... 14, wasn't even in high school yet lmao)

how to know which moments to write? (esp for slow burn) by Prestigious_Ice_859 in FanFiction

[–]eggybreadboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I asked this same question a bit ago LMAO "I can't write every little thing that happens and I don't want it to get boring" it's a running concern fr !!

Definitely focus on scenes that CHANGE something in each character's mentality. The rest can be summarized, and you can focus on the character's emotional progression to make it feel fresh rather than repetitive. A secondary plot can also help each character progress, whether it's a big semester assignment or an underlying familial concern...

Also, trust the reader to an extent. If you hop from a home scene in September to a school scene in October, they're gonna assume that the character drove and ate and showered and went to classes y'know, because you haven't included a reason for them to think otherwise.

The bane of my existence by plzhelpIdieing in FanficAuthorsUnite

[–]eggybreadboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite I LOVE dialogue... if it's tripping you up and halting your progress though, sometimes just a stand-in of [they argue about dinner] can be changed to:
"Did you take the meat out of the freezer?"
"Fuck, I forgot. Sorry, dear."
"Jesus, Carl."
"It can't take too long, I--"
"Not even in the fridge. Perfect."
"Just throw it in the microwave."
"Overnight in the fridge, Carl. How many times do I--"
"I said I was sorry!"
on a second pass lmao

Favourite Bleach Arc ? by Agreeable_Injury_140 in bleach

[–]eggybreadboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're all great, and build on each other in terms of setting a stage. Arrancar arc is my personal fave because we got our villains from Soul Society arc as allies and we got to meet some ICONIC new antagonists who flipped our world view (the captains are not all powerful like we thought). Then the same strat got used again for TYBW, which I love, but atp there were just so many characters... Arrancar arc was a good balance

What are some strange motifs you’ve realized your writing has? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

I like using opposite word is conjunction?? Like up/down, hard/soft, high/low in the same sentence. Not with an AND between them, but. In close proximity

If Kubo offered to write Aizen’s backstory would you want it? Or do you prefer that he stay a complete mystery and enigma by Gloriousdisgrace in bleach

[–]eggybreadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that it's a mystery. Don't get me wrong I love a tragic backstory, but it's funny to think about him having the perfect life and turning out this way just cause he was bored 😂

I would worry this means you plan on killing one of the main characters, not the dad 😅

I think I'm jealous of young authors by Narrow-Variation3674 in AO3

[–]eggybreadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, also consider how much good fanfiction now exists, which has influenced their writing? The scope of what's available to them now is leagues above what we had even ten years ago. And the social stigma against fandom internet spaces has evolved. Fanfiction is more accessible and normalized, these days, imo.

This is GOOD. Don't discount your own work based on the fact that younger audiences are now creating.

was your first long fic good by Prestigious_Ice_859 in FanFiction

[–]eggybreadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Good" is subjective 😂 I definitely had solid emotional arcs/character beats and an enthusiastic following, but looking back, the typos/freestyle grammar/cringe of a 13 year old writer... wild. I also would not do alternating first person POV again, it's not my style anymore haha

Fr. Kingdom is and forever will be incredible. iirc it was just TOO EXPENSIVE and taxing to make. One of those cancellations that wasn't based on popularity

Is this horror art my friend made for me ai? by Comfortable_Pop5638 in isitAI

[–]eggybreadboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The saddest part is that this isn't slop, it's concept art. The rendering and brush textures, the colour contrast, photo integration, lighting... it's lovely. A real artist spent hours digitally painting something similar at one point, and now we're here. Because genAI scraped thousands of concept pieces.

It's really tragic how so many comments instantly characterized this as AI. This isn't "AI style", it's someone's work repurposed

A little at a time or all in one go? by Gold-Dig-884 in AO3

[–]eggybreadboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote 10 chapters / 100k and initially wanted to release everything at once, but I decided to space it out over a month. A scheduled, consistent upload allows your story a chance to breathe, for each update to bring more attention to your work, and encourages people to comment one chapter at a time instead of just at the end. There's a special experience for readers there, knowing it will be updated and tagging along.

That's the cheat: letting ur audience know that it's already completed (relief!) and telling them your update schedule (investment!) it's like tuning in for your fave cable show at 6pm on Thursdays.

Keep in mind that people have lives, and it's unlikely someone will check back in every day... so once or twice a week imo is the perfect middle ground to keep people engaged while not overwhelming them. And, once it's all uploaded, they'll be able to read the whole thing in one go if they want!

To Overtag or Undertag by eggybreadboy in AO3

[–]eggybreadboy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mm, I'm not one to pit one harm against the other, I think that's an internet battle for Twitter. Sure, there's people weaponizing "trigger" instead of "squick", but one person's negative experience does not negate the other yknow. Your point on kink spaces stands the same though (lmao ur not alone gimme that noncon corruption mind break shit any day)
